ActiveVideo to Show HTML5 Apps on CloudTV Platform:  Expands HTML5 Ecosystem to Cable

CHICAGO, June 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- ActiveVideo Networks(TM), creators of CloudTV(TM), the cloud-based app platform, will demonstrate how HTML5 applications can be delivered to any digital set-top box or video streaming decoder at The Cable Show this week.

At its exhibit (Suite ES-8) during the June 14-16 show, ActiveVideo will show how the ability of CloudTV to bring HTML5 apps to the television significantly expands content opportunities for multichannel video service providers and creates new markets for Web developers.

"The role of HTML5 in enabling many of the most compelling user experiences delivered by Google Chrome and Apple Safari browsers and its growing use for multimedia and graphical content have rapidly increased the importance of HTML5 authoring tools for the development community," said John Callahan, CTO of ActiveVideo Networks.  "Ultimately, our goal is to make it easy for content developers and network operators to overcome set-top box constraints and quickly reach mass audiences with cutting edge user experiences via the CloudTV platform."

Available on millions of screens, CloudTV leverages content stored, processed and rendered entirely in the network cloud to significantly expand the reach and availability of rich, Web-based user experiences. Navigation interfaces and other applications are delivered as a single, adaptable bandwidth video stream to the set-top box or connected device, which simply passes user keyclicks from standard remote controls, smartphones or tablets back through to the cloud with very low latency.

The CloudTV architecture offers a variety of benefits for all stakeholders, including: the ability to run rich applications uniformly on any connected digital device, regardless of processing power; the elimination of the need for more expensive processing and storage capabilities in the end-user device; a "One Platform" approach in which a limitless array of content and applications can be written once and delivered to any STB; and the minimization of software bugs by streaming -- rather than downloading -- content to the TV.  In addition, multichannel video providers can use CloudTV to achieve accelerated time-to-market for a rich array of services and applications, to enhance EBIF and also to deploy multiple user interfaces in any given market.  For consumers, placing the intelligence in the network, and not in the home, ensures availability of the widest diversity of applications on any set-top box.
