Satire on celebrity news media received great reviews from critics and readers

CHICAGO, Oct. 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- After one year in print, the critically acclaimed satirical book on the celebrity news media, "The Wizards of Spin, America's Favorite News Stars," is now available in all Ebook formats for only .99 cents.

"The Wizards of Spin," published by Second City Books, is a compilation of satirical fiction based on real news and the news and talk show celebrities who deliver their commentary, or spin on the news, to America each day.

The book received very strong reviews from both critics and readers, who consistently pointed out that several sections in the book made them "laugh out loud!"

The Sun-Times' Bill Zwecker wrote, "For those looking for a very funny satire on the wacky world of TV news and schmooze, check out John Ruane's 'The Wizards of Spin,' with hilarious tales about characters who clearly are thinly veiled fictional alter egos of Oprah Winfrey, Chris Matthews, David Letterman, Stephen Colbert and a slew of other famous small-screen personalities."

Rick Kogan of the Chicago Tribune said, "John Ruane is a talented writer and his latest book is satire about today's news media, in which he takes this craziness to the next level. If watching television news these days makes you want to scratch your eyes out or bang your head against the wall or have a cocktail, the best antidote for that is John Ruane's new book, 'The Wizards of Spin.'"

The three chapters that have received the greatest response are on FOX News' Bill O'Reilly boxing media foe Keith Olbermann, comedy pals Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart having dinner at an Italian restaurant in Hell's Kitchen, and the lengths the Today Show and Good Morning America go to win the sweeps weeks ratings battle.  However, the author was surprised by one chapter that received the biggest laughs.

"The last chapter is on public relations, taken from a press conference I witnessed in the 1990s," said Ruane, a longtime journalist who has worked in PR over the past 20 years. "Numerous readers have written to tell me they busted out laughing several times reading this story.  I think people would be surprised to know that about ninety percent of that chapter is journalism, most of it actually happened as I wrote it."

Besides stories based on the celebrity news personalities, Ruane provides a satirical twist to stories taken from news events over the past few years. In developing the book, the Chicago author used the creative style learned training at the famed Second City Theater, mixing in longer chapters with short quick stories to keep the pace of the book moving.

"The Wizards of Spin" is available for .99 cents in all Ebook formats at Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com and Ebooks.com.  The paperback is currently available at Amazon.com for $11.69.  For more information about the author, go to http://www.Johnruane.net.
