ProCure Proton Therapy Center launches interactive online video channel

ProCureOKC.com offers insight to proton therapy treatment and facility culture

OKLAHOMA CITY, May 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- ProCure Proton Therapy Center in Oklahoma City (ProCure) today unveiled ProCureOKC.com, a high-definition, video-rich online network intended to increase knowledge and awareness of proton therapy, an alternative to traditional radiation that specifically targets cancerous tissue while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue, resulting in less risk for side effects.

Located at http://www.ProCureOKC.com, the online channel has easy-to-navigate sections featuring an overview of proton therapy, personal patient stories, physician interviews and an in-depth look at the types of cancer treated with proton therapy, including prostate, pediatric, head and neck, brain, lymphoma, anal and lung cancers.

"From diagnosis and exploring treatment options to the completion of treatment and recovery, this channel provides an outlet for our patients to share their story and allow viewers an authentic, step-by-step glimpse into a patient's cancer journey," said Sameer Keole, M.D., medical director of  ProCure in Oklahoma City.

Since opening in July 2009, ProCure has treated patients from 29 states and 11 countries. From Seiling, Okla. to Birmingham, England, video teams spanned the state and the world to capture footage of ProCure patients in their hometown environment following treatment.

One family featured on the video channel is the family of Lilly Gillon, a 3-year-old from Birmingham, England, who came to ProCure for last-resort treatment of a rare cancerous tumor that grows in the central nervous system tissues in the brain. Surgeons in England removed her tumor in an emergency operation, but they said the tumor would return in a few short months if she didn't undergo further treatment.

Lilly's parents, Graham and Cherie, decided proton therapy was the best chance their daughter had at survival and a normal life after treatment. According to Graham, while at ProCure Lilly transformed from a little girl who wouldn't eat, speak or play to a vivacious toddler who loved running around and eating French fries and ranch dressing.

"The change in her was remarkable," Graham said. "She was eating, walking and was just nothing like I expected. She did not look like a child who was being treated for cancer. We are so thankful our daughter was given the chance to receive life-saving treatment at ProCure."

Rob Lake, president of ProCure in Oklahoma City, describes the center as a place where patients are treated like family and can find support from the treatment team and from one another.

"We developed the ProCure channel to illustrate our supportive culture and offer peace of mind to those seeking a treatment facility where you're cared for like you're a member of the family."
