New TÜV SÜD Service Stops Wireless Devices Interfering With Radar
FAREHAM, England, August 22, 2012/PRNewswire/ --
TÜV SÜD Product Service today launches the UK's first Dynamic Frequency Selection
(DFS) service using a single-test box, to ensure that new wireless devices operating in
the 5GHz band do not interfere with radar systems.
As the 2.4 GHz spectrum becomes increasingly overloaded, wireless device and mobile
phone manufacturers are developing products for the less populated 5GHz range, which is
currently allocated to military and airport radar. DFS stops such devices affecting radar
systems as it continuously monitors for potential interference, ceasing transmission and
switching to an alternative channel if it detects radar presence.
The new TÜV SÜD service is up to 60 per cent faster than traditional methods of DFS
testing as it uses a new single-test platform designed and made in the UK by Aeroflex.
This means that manufacturers of wireless devices and mobile phones will significantly
reduce time to market for new products.
Jean-Louis Evans, Managing Director of TÜV SÜD Product Service, said: "As
manufacturers must prove that their product complies with DFS standards, the safety of
critical radar systems will not be compromised by the expected proliferation of 5GHz
capable devices. If manufacturers get this wrong the consequences could prove lethal. A
fast, effective service such as ours ensures that they get it right, while enabling them
to release products to market quicker than their competitors."
The DFS service will test against regulatory requirements across the world including
the EU's harmonised standard EN 301 893 (version 1.6.1), which affects 31 countries in
Europe, CFR47 Pt15E (USA) and RSS-210 (Canada). TÜV SÜD's equipment has also been
developed to test the new radar pulses for DFS as published in the recently updated
version 1.7.1 of EN 301 893.
