Hosting company pledges support to new internet infrastructure advocacy group
DURHAM, N.C., Sept. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- A Small Orange, a shared, reseller, VPS, and dedicated web hosting company with offices in Durham, NC, has announced its commitment to support the new i2Coalition -- a nonprofit organization comprised primarily of web hosting companies, data centers, and registrars who are dedicated to fostering public policy that supports responsible economic growth within Internet based technologies.
The new i2Coalition was developed in response to the recent SOPA and PIPA bills. "Our industry needed to step forward and educate legislators on the infrastructure that makes the Internet possible. The way that the SOPA and PIPA bills were written would have been detrimental to the sustainability and growth of the Internet as both a business and communication platform," remarked Jen Lepp, Director of Customer Service for A Small Orange who volunteers with the i2Coaltion.
In addition to working with Internet infrastructure providers in order to develop and share business practices, the i2Coalition will represent their interests on Capitol Hill and relevant regulatory agencies. The new group also seeks to educate members of Congress and other lawmakers on the complexities and inner workings of the Internet.
The group is a nonpartisan organization that believes neutrality is key to attaining the i2Coalition's goals. The group also seeks to protect the rights of free speech, free expression, personal privacy, and the freedom to assemble in order to maintain a free and open Internet.
The i2Coalition opposes legislation enabling law enforcement organizations to search, seize, or otherwise interrupt communication without court approval or probable cause or in a matter inconsistent with the US Constitution.
The coalition is also opposed to the taxation of online services such as the imposition of sales and/or recreational taxes on information, downloads, or other services provided by online communication services. The group will attempt to stop legislation that attempts to place liability based on an individual's communications and/or actions on the owners, operators, managers, or shareholders of online communication systems.
A Small Orange is proud to be a founding member of the i2Coalition. "We believe in a free and open Internet," said Douglas Hanna, CEO of A Small Orange. "Our customers share our goals, and it is time for companies like ours to band together in order to affect positive change within our industry."
