Teleste at IP Cable World Summit 2012: Data Over Coax Key to Achieve EU's Broadband Goals
TURKU, Finland, November 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --
- Data over Coax technologies are the most economically sound solution to reach EU
goal of bringing broadband to all EU citizens, but sorely need common rules and standards
At the IP Cable World Summit 2012, Teleste, an international technology group
specialised in broadband video and data communication systems and services, will bring
forward its Data over Coax solutions and technologies, which enable operators to bring
fibre level broadband connections to consumers by utilizing existing cable infrastructure
within buildings. Data over Coax is one of the keys in realizing EU's goals for universal
broadband access across Europe, but clear rules are needed for the use, maintenance and
sharing of cable assets across the continent. Teleste welcomes you to learn more in Berlin
27-28 November 2012.
In the "Digital Agenda for Europe" strategy, EU has set a goal that by 2020, all EU
citizens should have download rates of 30 Mbps, with at least 50 percent of European
households subscribing to internet connections above 100 Mbps. However, only 5 percent of
European households have connections of 30 Mbps or above currently.
"Meeting these goals can prove difficult and costly without the right technology
decisions. Fibre to the Home is a good choice in new apartment buildings, but it is far
too expensive to be economically viable in existing buildings. There is a solution
however: by using existing coaxial cabling and Data over Coax technologies, the cost of
bringing fibre level connections to existing buildings can be cut down to one fifth or
less, compared to using fibre all the way", said Hanno Narjus, SVP, Video and Broadband
Solutions, Teleste.
"However, the coax infrastructure is not optimally utilized within European footprint:
building owners and legislators do not realize how valuable an asset they have in the
coaxial cabling, and moreover, how this valuable asset could be maximally utilized. The
European countries need common standards and a clear set of rules on the use, sharing and
maintenance of this valuable asset. The technology decisions that will be made during the
next few years will determine whether Europe will remain competitive as an information
society", Narjus concluded.
Teleste has been a pioneer in the field of Data over Coax technologies. The first
generation of products and field deployments were launched in 2006-7 and the company is
now planning its 2nd generation products which offer greatly improved performance as well
as solid standards. Teleste is the optimal partner for network operators providing
broadband connections as it can provide not only the products, but also ensure successful
planning, implementation and maintenance of the Data over Coax solutions across Europe.
