ARRIS Introduces Ad Insertion Clustering Software

CORTEX technology will help cable operators cost-effectively grow HD capacity, improve operational efficiency, and preserve high run rates

SUWANEE, Ga., Jan. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- ARRIS Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARRS) today introduced new CORTEX clustering software technology, available now, to be used with the ARRIS ConvergeMedia(TM) solution, utilizing the XMS Flex Distribution Platforms with Streaming Media Engine (SME) 5.3.1 and Ad Control Manager (ACM) 3.0 software releases. CORTEX gives operators the ability to consolidate their ad insertion infrastructure into centralized, resilient systems where the delivery infrastructure is both reliable and expandable. The technology will help cable operators cost-effectively grow capacity for HD expansions, improve operational efficiency, and preserve high run rates.

The new clustering software has been designed specifically to meet the needs of ARRIS customers. ARRIS has over 15 years of advertising experience and its advertising management solutions have captured over 60% of the North American market. The company has helped operators transition their businesses from analog to digital ad insertion and expand their digital services to support both SD and HD ad insertion.

ARRIS Clustering Software Increases Operational Efficiency and Resiliency

CORTEX provides more fault tolerance than previous clustering techniques. It also contrasts with systems using external applications to provide fail-over resiliency. CORTEX provides more granularity and flexibility in configuring the system and developing new capabilities. It is also more scalable since the intelligence is embedded in each node deployed.

CORTEX, combined with the XMS Flex distribution platform, provides the added flexibility and resiliency needed to scale capacity both cost-effectively and reliably. The solution targets ad sales groups seeking to centralize their ad insertion servers in order to maximize hardware efficiency and reduce operational complexity,

"Operators continue to grapple with increased capacity needs to meet demand for a more diverse array of video and advertising services. Additional pressures to streamline operations emphasize the challenge to consolidate operations and reduce complexity at the edge of the delivery network," said Neerav Shah, VP, Product Line Management at ARRIS. "This is especially true for digital ad insertion services, where ad sales groups face large upgrades fueled by HD expansions. Simply put, adding capacity must be cost effective and manageable."

CORTEX Improves Infrastructure Scalability and Load-Sharing Capabilities

CORTEX enables loosely coupled ConvergeMedia XMS Flex servers to operate as a single, load-sharing, resilient, logical system. The software

--  Uses standard GigE networking components and protocols to deliver the
        most cost-efficient clustering technology
--  Is optimized to operate with the XMS COTS platform, complementing high
performance and density with increased system resiliency
--  Supports dynamic content management and load balancing to optimize
        storage usage and streaming demand
--  Provides hardware failure isolation and automatic recovery from one or
more node failures to ensure continued operations
CORTEX is part of the XMS operating system (SME), so any application running on top of it can take advantage of its benefits.
