Hasso Plattner Offers Fourth openHPI Course on In-Memory Database

POTSDAM, Germany, September 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --

With more than 6,200 international participants enrolled, Prof. Hasso Plattner's
fourth, free openHPI course on the technology of high speed database technology begins on
Monday at https://open.hpi.de. Plattner is co-founder and Supervisory Board Chairman
of the software giant SAP and benefactor of HPI. His current Massive Open Online Course
(MOOC) is entitled "In-Memory Data Management". Here, every participant has the
opportunity to become familiar with the lightning-fast and flexible analysis of huge
amounts of data, which in the past took hours or even days to complete. Hasso Plattner
Institute began the scientific research and development of the technology in 2006. All who
are interested can still register for the six-week, free course, in English, at
https://open.hpi.de/courses/imdb2015 .

In the course, Plattner teaches the basic concepts and construction principles of the
in-memory database technology. Participants will become familiar with the differences and
advantages of column-oriented processing in the main-memory of high-performance,
multi-core computers in contrast to row-oriented disk storage. Moreover, the course
targets the impact of future enterprise applications and their development.

"Since the fall of 2012, the subject matter has been met with keen interest by nearly
40,000 openHPI users," said the HPI benefactor. Over 5,600 have successfully completed the
course and received a certificate. "The high level of participation, and especially the
interaction among students, confirms that massive open online courses are groundbreaking
in the field of education," Plattner said. The interactive learning offer that integrates
a lively knowledge exchange on a social platform has been enthusiastically received.
Plattner's latest online course is an updated and enhanced version of the previous three
offers. The course contains learning videos, comprehensive reading material, online
quizzes, homework and an online final test.
