Thoughts on the new: Meshuggah, Strapping Young Lad, and Porcupine Tree albums? Sun Apr 17, 2005 10:49:28 AM#11044Perm Link
I don't have Deadwing yet, but I shall probably be getting it soon, and from what I've heard, it is great. I got Meshuggah's "Catch-33" and Strapping Young Lad's "Alien", though, and I have to say that they're both great albums, all around. I'd probably go as far as to say that "Alien" is better than "City", but I don't think "Catch-33" is as good as "Nothing". Then again, I haven't listened to Catch-33 much.
I got Deadwing on...let's see...Monday night, I want to say (as in, last Monday), and damn, I love this album. I don't think there's a single track on here I don't like. Wait...yes there is. I don't find "Glass Arm Shattering" very good, but whatever. I am, however, confused about why they put the song "Shesmovedon" on the end of this album and didn't mention it anywhere on the cd...and from what I can tell, it's the exact same song from Lightbulb Sun. Eh, I love that song anyway.
I've heard a little of SYL, and they're pretty heavy. I'll have to give the other guys a listen one of these days too. If I ever listen to the entire album, I'll post my thoughts here.
Right now, I'm into Mudvayne's new album, "Lost and Found", which was pretty decent, though it does have a number of fillers on it. Whether anybody here likes MV is another topic. Still, I really like the sound of MV and the variation from calm vocals to heavy, ala Fear Factory. I think they learned a thing or two from Trent Reznor if you ask me, considering that's his trademark style.
How long have you been listening to Strapping Young Lad and Meshuggah? I haven't heard DeadWing's music yet...
In....'02 I believe, I had heard that Meshuggah's "Nothing" was a good album, so based on the rantings of a friend, I bought the album, but didn't come to fully appretiate its genious until about six months later. Strapping Young Lad was...pretty much the same thing, only a few months after, and my friend burned me one SYL song, so I had good reason to buy an album.
You should totally check out Deadwing, I love that album to death.
Shesmovedon is supposed to be a remix. Whatever, it adds little to the album and would be better left to a b-side or EP. As far as the album goes, it's great. Only a couple of weak songs. Stupid Dream still rules it though.
