My uncle used to do that as a child when he didn't get his way. He'd threaten to choke himself into unconsciousness if my grandmother didn't fullfill his wishes. My grandmother would FREAK and actually do what he asked. Finally she asked a doctor if there was a way to stop and he said throw him the bath and spray him with cold water. That stopped him.
