Yeah, this kind of stuff has been present in every government since the there were governments. Taking it to the net is just the next logical step. People should be able to tell the difference between bullshit and truth, though. Ohh wait, most people can't see that most of the media is biased to the left...

That is a different issue. The Domain Name System doesn't control the Internet. Anyone is free to setup their own DNS Servers and hand out names to anyone else. We Americans have a vested interest in the DNS system (damn double word). Most of our ecommerce is based on DNS and there is no reason to reliquish control of the system that runs PERFECTLY well to any other group.

Ohh, I hope you realise that there are root servers in other parts of the world besides America. http://www.root-servers.org/ Would you want the terrible organisation such as the UN to control the Internet? There are countries that are far worse than America on those seats such as Iran and China.

ya I know it's a differnt issue, though this could be abused (in theory)... I wasn't being very serious on that and know that wasn't clear.

on a different note: recently our chemistry teacher told us about a GPS replecement being developed by the EU to be independant of the US in case of a war. Really, what would happen to the internet if there was a transatlantic world war ?! (it seams very unlikely for such a war to come into existance at all... In a Europe vs America war, Asia would win.)
