Thoughts on DRM and Fair Use Sat Apr 15, 2006 11:03:09 AM#16961Perm Link
I'm writing a report about DRM and Fair Use. I think most people know my stance on the issue (DRM that is used to violate consumer rights should be banned). I would like to get a tally about what everyone else thinks about the issue.
2014 is going to be a good year. More content, more streamlining. Be a part of history!
Digital Restrictions Management (term by RMS) is bad. The point of DRM is to restrict what the customer uses a piece of software of data for; so the basic thought is that you can't trust the customer. If you don't trust your customers, you shouldn't deal with them in the first place.
In some cases (especially DVDs) DRM makes data access impossible or illegal unless you pay unrealted companies money (example for DVDs: To watch a DVD, assuming you have a device that can read it (DVD drive), you still need to pay either software companies like Apple. Microsoft (there is, for instance, no legal way to play DVD under linux) and/or CyberLink or a hardware DVD player and a TV manufacturer money to legally read it.)
There are also especiallt bad cases (Apple iTunes) where DRM is used to create monopolies....
