Sun to Open Source Java!

Doomsday has arrived! Sun will open source Java! They are trying to make it so it won't be forked... well, they can make sure no forks contain the Java name by making a standard test suite and making sure all forks comply with the Java tests. It is easy to prevent forks with a good community.

freedom to fork is part of what free software is all about. idiots.

I can see why Sun doesn't want Java to fork. They want Java to remain stable.

I think they can do this by requiring anything with the Java name to pass certain tests, like SHCase said.

This won't prevent forks, but will prevent someone from using the Java name without certain things that Sun wants.

Sun wants to benifit from open source, but they want to be treated as a favoured member of the community, instead of being treated equally. That's not the way it's done.
Keeping the name Java... well look at UNIX - lookalikes are taking over, WITHOUT being called "UNIX"
