My glistening tears rupture into clear glitter against the bleak background. I’m falling downwards, but I have my arm outstretched before me. My hand frantically inches forward, wanting – needing – someone to take hold of it. My jaw hangs down, lips in a screaming formation. But no sound is produced out of the larynx. I’m moving slower; glad, but now unable to breathe. Thick bubbles blow outwards from my mouth and nostrils, salt water burning my eyes. Then, it’s like a force is pushing me, faster. The bubbles come quicker, bursting up and towards the blanket of blue while I go the opposite direction into a hole of black. My skin starts to itch and burn as I move like a torpedo, right arm still hanging up in a pleading manner. It’s an endless abyss below the ocean’s surface. And I’m falling straight down into the dismal darkness.
Then, something forms in front of me, out of nowhere. Their smooth fingers brush against my blistering ones. Then, a voice becomes muffled against the rippling H2O. “Jayden, grab my hand!” I haven’t heard my name in forever. My tears come harder, but mix in with the liquid surrounding me. I try to fight this force that’s brining towards the end, and feel my shoulder popping out of socket. I clench my teeth together, and stretch for the feminine hand. I’m getting myself closer, close enough for us to clasp onto each other’s hands. With one last tug, I get my arm up and we grab tightly onto one another’s wrists. Then, I’m pulled up and it’s as though I crash through cement. Sunlight obscures my vision as I stumble forward, trying to maintain balance on unfamiliar legs. Something takes hold of my back, right between the shoulder blades. And I’m staring straight into gentle, aqua eyes. I take in a deep breath of life returning air, welcoming the oxygen with force.
The girl gasps, releasing me once she realized that we had been touching only inches apart, where our noses could have touched if I hadn’t been leaning back. I’m lost for words, or maybe in those words. Either way, I didn’t know what to say. So, slightly startled by her sudden and gorgeous appearance, I fall backwards onto the sand. The girl gives a face-breaking smile that could drown the universe in light, and giggles like a fairy having too much fun. Once again, I see that hand held out to me, and this time she places more weight to the right causing her hips to sway with grace. The girl then pulls a strand of black hair behind her rounded ears with the other hand and closes those brilliant eyes as her grin enlarges.
“I’m Cecil.” Her voice is magnificent, a calming luxury to the mind. I take hold of her hand, and she gets me to my feet. My legs wobble, about to give in so I’d fall again on the ground that I haven’t felt in ages. The earth of which I was born onto, but still forgotten. But she keeps me up. “Don’t worry, I’ve got you.”
I nod at her; soaking, blond hair slaps my forehead and cheeks. My simple green t-shirt and khaki pants act as another skin, suctioned to me.
“Y-you saved me.” Is all I can say. I can tell that my eyes are wide, and my body is tense.
“Of course I did,” she lets out another lovely laugh. We’re still holding hands, and I suddenly slip mine out of hers and take two steps backwards. The heels of my bare feet touch lapping water. I squish my toes into the sand.
“How…do you know my name?” I question, staring down at the tiny particles of rock that my fidgeting feet sink into.
“I’ve been watching you for quite some time Jayden.” Cecil stands straight with lips not knowing what to do. She’s wondering if she should smile, frown or just keep them in the line. Cecil finally gives another smile and a chuckle. I can feel my face redden at her sentence.
“You’ve been watching me?”
“Of course, I was finally able to get to you. Just in time, too. I wasn’t sure if I would’ve been able to get you out if things would’ve been delayed any longer. Jayden, you actually saved me.”
I’m confused. “How did I save you?”
“Turn around, tell me what you see.” I do as she says, and gaze back at the ocean. It seems to be an infinite distance, ending where it touches the falling sun. “I was once a part of the sea. But, you had been falling for years, endlessly. I watched you, helplessly, as you cried out for someone. Marianna was it?”
“Anna,” I whisper, a twinge to my heart. Then I glance up at Cecil. “You were a part of the ocean, and you became a living being.”
“Yes, and I have you to thank greatly for that.” Cecil gives me that laugh once more. I give two head swivels, my eyes darting from side to side with my neck.
“Wh-where’s Anna?” I gasp, turning to look at Cecil again. She slides her index finger down her chin and flicks it up in a way that she had just thought of something. Then, Cecil gives a menacing wink.
“Gone.” The single word strikes me, and I take two more steps back. Chilling waves pound against my calves.
“Gone?” I repeat in a horror tone.
“Yup, she’s gone, and won’t be coming back. Ever.” Why does Cecil seem pleased with this? She seemed so kind at first, but now Cecil is acting like another person. She was one with the ocean, so her mood is probably ever changing; like the water’s currents.
“No!” I shout at her with bulging eyes. “Anna was here, not even two hours ago.”
“Jayden, it has been six years.” Another pound from her words and I move back shakily. The water is now past my waist. How could it have been that long? I fell down a cliff, down into the water and into an abyss. How could I have even survived for six years underwater? The cliff isn’t even within sight, I don’t see it anywhere. It couldn’t have just vanished.
“You’re very confused.” Of course I am! I can feel tears of frustration burn my eyes. As I try to hold them back my nostrils flare.
“No! She can’t be gone! Where am I!?” I can’t contain myself anymore. I hate this girl. I hate Cecil!
“Calm down, when you get mad it makes me feel uncomfortable. You’re on earth silly, where else would you be.” She sees my expression, and she gets it. Cecil lets out a dragging sigh. “Oh, well ever since you fell in I watched over you. I could never touch you, but I could get a barrier around you. You seemed dead, but I was confident. I think you were in a coma the whole time until five minutes ago. That’s when I was able to get to you, touch you.”
