The intervention seemed to boost the thickness of the degraded epithelial layers from one layer to five or six after 100 days, when the rats were examined, says Lanza. This extra thickness is enough to maintain the photoreceptors and is translated into improved visual performance, he explains. After treatment, the rats' visual acuity seemed to be around 70% of normal, which Lanza describes as "100% improvement" over untreated controls.
