BTW: Mirroring may have a writing performance hit, but it give you a big gain while reading because both disks (should) have the same information.
Also, "When RAID is not": Please note that RAID is no substitute for real backup, through tape or CD-R. It creates redundancy, not retainership. If you accidentaly mess up your partitions, format your drives, or if your file system breaks down, you will have redundant errors on multiple drives.
