That article is shit. It completely neglects the fact that Microsoft lost (and loses) money on every single XBox and 360 sold, not to mention the silly amount of money selling games for $60 gets them in return. And MS selling 10 million 360's by December is a pipe dream cranked out by Moore. Companies losing money on hardware has been a prevalent problem since the Saturn days.
And what the hell is this:

Yeah, nearly all consoles lose the manufacturers money when they sell em, but its rediculous to say they couldnt absorb the losses and make it all back from the game sales. No way something like this will bring down sony

usiually everyone loses money at first but after awhile payoff comes in the end... i still think ps3 is over priced for what its made for i can spend that much money in upgrades to my pc or car payments... ps3=blows

I wouldn't worry about MS/Sony games division being an anti-trust. Perhaps you weren't awake for the cingular/at&t merger? 50 million customers making it BY FAR the largest mobile phone service provider. The FCC and FTC even let 'em break a few rules when it came to spectrum. The current gov't doesn't mind anti-trust and they don't segregate videogames from the rest of the software/hardware industry. Well, except for when they're trying to use censorship to win votes of parents.

Sony charging $500 and $600 for the consoles? Blu-ray is to be blamed (360 uses DVD). Otherwise, the console would have been competitively priced, something Sony seems to have forgotten about, and will hurt sales till prices drop. Sony is betting everything on Blu-ray being a hit, which is why they decided to put it into the PS3, besides increased disc space.

There are a decent amount of people who bought their PC's to play hi-tech games with, so maybe the PS3 will appeal to them; if you think about it, $600 is a good price for a gaming computer. I think Sony should have included a mouse and keyboard with every PS3 based on the fact they're considering adding hardware upgrades to stay competitive with the PC technology, which means if you don't have the upgrade, certain new games won't be fully accessible.

THe problem with development costs on consoles is that they keep going up while on PC it's about the same. UT2007 will be something like $40 for pc and at LEAST $60 for PS3 and nobody knows exactly what sony's online plans are going to be, much less if it will support VOIP.

Oh bullshit. Peter Moore pulled that out of his ass to fob off people that would have complained that Microsoft is so obviously taking a much bigger hike for licensing fees to try to pay off the 360. If it was higher development costs, than there is no reason that any game yet be $60, as every single one that isn't exclusive (which are few and far between anyways) is either a pixel straight PC port (see: Call of Duty 2) or a PS2 game with better textures (Burnout: Revenge) or (more often) just an option to play the game in high definition (see American Wasteland). The best example I can think of is Saints Row, which is essentially a spruced up GTA Vice City with MTA implemented and character development taken out. The only reason that Sony figured they could get away with it is because Microsoft did, and because they have to take a hit on BD discs. Nintendo is pretty much forcing developers to spend a lot of time and money on the Wii games and they are still only charging $50. And besides, I can name quite a few games that I can guarantee cost far more than the glorified Halo 2 port GoW is, with many of them still being released for normal prices.

So you're saying Gears of War is possible on the regular Xbox, and this is only a high res 360 version? Okay, for a high end PC game port, I can see why $60 bucks is overpriced. Consider high-end games cost millions of dollars to create for these studios, they want to make up for their time and losses by charging $60.

Remember the Nintendo 64 cartridges cost $59.99? I remember Phantasy Star 2 for the Sega Genesis cost $79.99, in 1990. Waaay overpriced, I agree.

I will agree, $60 bucks per game is a lot of money to pay, but thankfully, new games like "Just Cause" is $49.99 on the 360 regular price.

Development costs HAVE gone up, some poor guy has to paint all those textures and whatnot. GOW did cost a lot to make, more than UT. I'd figure though, that engine licsencing has lowered the cost of programming while art and writing costs have gone up, in the end it balances out. Of course, then there's games with new engines, shitloads of rendering to be done, lots of pro writing, and lines read by recognized actors who don't come cheap. Halo & Halo 2, those games weren't cheap, same with GTA. However, their sales make up for it. On the other hand, GH was made on the cheap and didn't have to sell many copies to be profitable.

Quite honestly, from what I've seen, other than the high-res stuff I've seen nothing that could not have been done on the original XBox, if only because nonone ever pushed the boundaries of that system like they did with the PS2 because MS dumped all support for it.

That was for a totally different reason. With the N64, Nintendo basically said STFU when developers complained that the cartridges were expensive, so they raised prices to compensate because the medium was mor expensive. Genny and SNES games were more expensive at the time because of the huge drop of the Japanese economy in 1989 all the way up to 2002, not to mention lack of a standard for game costs and the cartridge based games (Sega CD games cost considerably less on average, if I remember correctly).

Speaking of which, CDs are way too fucking expensive, and the only recording artist who gives a shit about giving a lil' value to the fans is Weird Al. We're talking 5.1 mixes, music videos, behind the scenes extras, etc etc etc etc. Of course, he also has the very funny and sarcastic "Don't download this song".
