“Sayuri of the Shimamura household, do you accept the spirit known as Todoroki?” The ominous male voice questions. Sayuri stands in the center of several cloaked figures, whom form a circle around her. The room is pitch black, except for the candles that the cloaked figures hold in their cupped hands. Before Sayuri can respond, her stomach growls.
“Hey, weren’t we in the middle of dinner? Why couldn’t we wait until after food to do this?” the girl heavily sighs, tears forming in the corners of her eyes as she nearly collapses. She rubs her stomach and groans.
“No. We must complete the ritual first, honey- I mean Sayuri of the Shimamura family!” a woman ‘s voice replies to Sayuri’s complaint.
“Fine. Yes. I accept.” Sayuri states, folding her arms over her chest, “Now let’s go finish ea-”
Her sentence is cut short as the ground begins to shake. Sayuri screams as the floor beneath her feet starts to glow and crack, forming an odd symbol under her, causing her to closer her eyes. She has to hold her skirt down as an odd breeze sweeps through, twisting around Sayuri, as if attacking her. Then, it all stops, and the world seemed to settle once more. Sayuri blinks, confused. Then she gives an upset, “Hey! You guys never warned me about that!” She stomps a foot on the ground.
The cloaked figures pull their hoods down, all revealing themselves to be Sayuri’s family. Or at least the family members who live with her - her grandmother, her parents, and her two older brothers.
Her grandma claps her hands together and laughs, “Your grandpa would be so proud!” She beams at Sayuri, walking up and grasping the girl in a tight embrace.
“Still don’t know how I got stuck with grandpa’s spirit. . . “ Sayuri grumbles, “Don’t know why I couldn’t have my own like Katsuo or Yuuta.”
Her grandma pulls away, hands now firmly gripping onto Sayuri’s shoulders. “It is a privelege to get a spirit passed down to you, Sayuri. And you must be of a certain type in order for it to accept you in return, which Todoroki has done for you, but he did not for your brothers.” Sayuri glances over at her eldest brother at the age of 24, Katsuo, who nods. Yuuta, whom is 20, just shrugs.
“But. . . why. . .”Sayuri’s eyes drift down to her feet. The floor had returned to normal. Good. Sayuri didn’t want to get stuck cleaning that up.
Her grandma clears her throat before beginning: “Spirits are something that not everyone in this world has, or even wishes to have. There are people in this world who believe that they shouldn’t even be in this world. But they still are. Our ancestors were chosen by spirits thousands of years ago. They came into this world from another realm, selecting someone they deem fit. But a weapon or item of some sort was also selected to act as a medium between the human and the spirit. And the Shimamura family spirit is Todoroki, who has been around for centuries. He was one of the first spirits to enter this world. And when one Shimamura would pass, he would select another whom he saw as worthy. And for your brothers’ spirits, as well as for many people with spirits these days, they have only just recently entered this world. Very few have a spirit as old as yours Sayuri.”
“I see. . .” Sayuri’s voice drifts. Her hands touch the two blades at her sides, and she sighs. She had been given the twin blades after her grandfather passed away five years ago. Her grandma instantly began training Sayuri, saying the blades are centuries old. They’re the blades that Todoroki have been using as a medium since day one.
“Alright! Let us continue our birthday dinner for our special birthday girl! Let us celebrate a wonderful 18 years!” her grandma exclaims, once more clapping her hands together as she grins from ear to ear.
The lights flicker on, revealing that the family had just been in the basement of their home. They all venture upstairs, Sayuri the last one to return to the dinner table. She didn’t feel as hungry anymore. Now that she has Todoroki. . . so much more pressure has been added to her life. Now she is expected to do great things, just as every other holder of Todoroki had done.
But I’m not great. . . so how am I supposed to do great things. . . Sayuri thinks to herself as she plays with her food.
Sayuri steps out of the bathroom, set and ready for bed. She makes her way to her room, fuzzy bunny slippers gliding across the carpet. She opens her door and freezes. Eyes wide, Sayuri staggers back and screams, slamming her door shut. Her brother Yuuta comes racing towards her, and is quick to ask what is wrong.
Sayuri can’t speak as she just gestures a trembling finger towards the door.
Slowly, Yuuta opens the door, and then produces a heavy sigh. He then looks at Sayuri and shakes his head. “That’s Todoroki. Go and make a better first impression.” With that, Yuuta walks back to his own room.
Sayuri heavily blinks, her mouth in the form of an ‘o’. She opens her door once more, and cautiously makes her way inside. Closing her door behind her, Sayuri looks at the creature.
“So you’re the famous Todoroki,” Sayuri tilts her head, “I imagined you a bit. . . bigger. And more scary looking?”
The feline spirit laughs, “If I were to go into my true form, this house would be no longer, foolish human.”
Her eyebrow twitches. She then jumps as he is suddenly in front of her, “So this is who I must deal with now?” His tail flicks, the bells jingle. “Ha. They seem to be getting worse as the generations go on.”
“Rude!” Sayuri gasps. She knits her brows together and folds her arms over her chest. “Well for your information I never asked to get stuck with you, either!”
Todoraki produces a powerful laugh. He then begins to fade away, an orange aura surrounding him as well as the twin blades on the floor. Then, Todoraki is gone, and the blades stop glowing. Sayuri just stands silently for a minute and then tosses herself onto the bed. She shoves her face into a pillow, and screams into it.
