I've got an idea for a new piece of content...

Make your own NAS.

It will be a guide to using Linux to setup a RAID 5 NAS. I'll be doing research into finding out which cards support Linux and such and what the best options to use are. This will be a simple NAS, not one with many sets of permissions and ACLs. It will use Samba.

Ideas or comments?

I belive true RAID needs no software support at all. So under linux you can run a proper RAID card or Linux software RAID/LVM.

I should really take the money to add a big disk/multiple disks to my wannabe server...

Obviously samba is no good solution for anything but compatibility... may I suggest having a look at FTP or SSH/SFTP ? Wink
