I'm running a survey in several communities I participate in looking for opinions. I don't know how many of you watch cartoons (as in Western-style, not anime), but as an aspiring animator/cartoonist, I watch them quite frequently. I had an idea for a cartoon when I was younger and every few years I get the urge to develop it. Needless to say, this is one of those years :3
Anyway, I was looking for some feedback into what people look for in cartoons. Characters, setting, subject matter? You folks could really help me out in letting me know what cartoons you find entertaining. Keep in mind, although anime is a fine art in it's own right, I'm not an anime artist. My cartoons are very western in style and thus anime-specific elements aren't really what I'm looking for. But you're welcome to give me any thoughts you like.
Anywho, a few questions that'd help, even if you can't think of independent advice:
What's your favorite cartoon, past or present (or both)? Why would you say you like that cartoon?
Who's your favorite cartoon character, past or present (or both)? Why does this character appeal to you?
What type of cartoons to you look for? What type do you avoid?
If you had a child at some point, what type of cartoons would you allow them to watch? Which ones would you block?
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Huh? Signature? What's going on with that signature?
I'm very partial to Venture Bros because it is adult themed humor. I also like Family Guy and Futurama...
I do like Ed, Edd, and Eddy. Many of the themes in that show are clearly adult wrapped in a child exterior... though, I don't like where the show is going with the school episodes.
2014 is going to be a good year. More content, more streamlining. Be a part of history!
i personally love fosters home, and all those other cartoons on cartoonnetwork specially ed ed and eddy (still a kid at heart here even though i still am one =p) i watch them mostly because they are funny. although i do watch action cartoons.i dont particularly avoid any cartoons though except for sports type ones.
Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy is the best show on TV since Johnny Bravo went off the air. Period.
Michael: Jodie, how's my schedule look for today? Jodie: You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection. Michael: Oh, yeah...sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!
I really like Futurama and old family guy and old simpsons. I really like 'intellectual' humor. Jokes that aren't just slapstick or what not. Simpsons actually has a lot of references to literature and some pretty clever jokes that slip by a lot of people. I also like storylines in my comedy which is why I don't like new simpsons too much because it tried to copy family guy to regain viewers by just pulling random irrelevant stuff out of the air. No good.
I enjoy the Simpsons. I like their humor. Futurama is not actually one of my faves , but for some weird reason, when I flip channels if they are showing it, I'll watch a bit. My favorite is the Pink Panther. Maybe is the lack of dialog, the music, the absurdity of it all.
I'll answer the questions like this:
What's your favorite cartoon, past or present (or both)? Why would you say you like that cartoon? Favorite cartoon in the past is probably Tom and Jerry. They STILL crack me up. Also some weird rare stuff like Brothers Grunt (only had 5 episodes on MTV in the mid-90s, made by the same guys who made Ed Edd and Eddy) and Liquid Television. Present...METALOCALYPSE! Although I'm partial to ATHF and Squidbillies because I know/seen some of the people in real life and I like absurd humor like that.
Who's your favorite cartoon character, past or present (or both)? Why does this character appeal to you? Past: Don't think I've ever had a favorite...
What type of cartoons to you look for? What type do you avoid? I tend to lean towards lowbrow, stupid humor, but I can enjoy the educational stuff from time to time.
If you had a child at some point, what type of cartoons would you allow them to watch? Which ones would you block? You'd probably think I shouldn't have kids...but I wouldn't restrict them, well, as babies I'm sure they could care less but I suppose I'd let them watch kiddie stuff because it's at their level.
I really enjoyed cartoons of the 80's - in particular Thundercats, Visionaries, Transformers, MASK, Jason And The Wheeled Warriors, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Bucky 'O Hare... and... yes... Ulysess!!!! The most messed up one of the lot! I'm sure censorship was trial-run on my generation... I mean... your family floating in air... in this empty space-mausoleum... I'm sure it had a permanent effect on me.
Bucky 'O Hare had one hell of a theme tune, if you can remember it... and man, he always had that scowl, like he was pissed off all the time... he was a rabbit that flew a space ship and commanded a four armed duck... he should have felt priviledged!!! Killer show.
I miss Thundercats, though, and the same with Visionaries.
It's a shame a lot of these cartoons were just made to promote the toys, because they were classic. If you can, download the Thundercat voice out-takes, they're hilarious.
My favourite all-time cartoon hero is Optimus Prime, as his role was more a father than a general. You don't get that these days in the age of flash heroes.
Hmmmm. I love King of the Hill. I am also a big time classic cartoon person. I love the old SuperFriends cartoons and Justice League of America. And yes, I admit it, I love OLD Scooby-Doo! Not new Scooby-Doo.
Hmmm... as some into cartoons and lover of animation myself. I watch alot of toons. Some of the cartoons that I like are like Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends... I thought that was genius.... the concept the freedom to create as many characters they want as the show progresses.... the jokes just adorable. I think some of the animations like Brats and Baby Brats.... where they're babies with makeup on and stuff. If I had kids I wouldn't let them watch that so much. I think a good cartoon should be family friendly no subjects that are really teen geared you know. Dating, Sex, Race Issues, Politics, Current Events really shouldn't be pushed to kids as a cartoon. I think it should be make you smile laugh... be entertaining. Not have a hidden agenda. I love all the cartoons that are silly... and youthful.
I really like Anime cartoons.......that's as far as I can go because there are so many anime cartoons that I've seen and most of them are my favorites though..........I try to avoid watching cartoons that aren't drawn with detail.....hope that sort of helps!
