Any Supernatural fans? What did you think about last night?
I thought it was great! Yes, there were some gapping plot holes, but I'm glad they wrapped up the Colt/Demon storyline. It was also nice to see Dad again, and I really like Bobby (Billy?). I hope he is back next season -- he seems to knock some sense into Dean. I especially loved the interaction between the two of them when Bobby sees Sam alive. It was like your parents getting your bad report card in the mail, but not wanting to mention it in front of your friends. Poor Dean was so uncomfortable.
I am surprised this show does so well. I wasn't thrilled the pilot, but it seems to have a growing following. I would like to hear some of your favorite episodes.
I think it does so well because there are so many inside jokes. The show makes fun of itself a lot. Plus, there is a wonderfully complex relationship between the two brothers.
My favorite episode would be when they visited a haunted movie set -- quite funny.
Another good one is the genie episode, where the older brother gets to live his subconscious dream life. It's a pivotal episode because you realize how screwed up Dean is. Even in his dream, he has no future, his brother is all that is good in the world, he has no relationship with his father. Basically the only thing he can imagine ever good happening to him, even in a perfect world, is having a cute girlfriend.
This season's finale was really good I thought, because it wrapped up the Daddy/Colt story line, which was getting old, finally exposed Dean's issues to everyone in a fairly spectacular way, and has set Sam up to actually grow out of his brother's shadow for once.
If you saw the pilot, I think season 2 is fairly standalone, and much better than season 1.
Here's the synopsis: After his wife dies under suspicious circumstances, an ex-marine takes his sons (one is about 7, one is a newborn) across the country trying to figure out what happened. What he discovers is a world of vampires, werewolves, demons and ghosts, as well as a small group of people who fight them. Dad becomes a "hunter" and basically drags the boys with him everywhere.
The show starts about 20 years later, where the oldest son is still in the "family business" while the youngest has sworn it off and is in college.
Right now in the series, the dad is dead and the boys are off fighting supernatural beings, supporting themselves through credit card-fraud and pool hustling, and on the run because of some legal issues. The youngest brother, Sam, may or may not be half-demon, and the oldest, Dean, has sold his soul to a different demon (in order to save his brother's life) and has only a year before she comes to collect it. The boys killed the demon who murdered their mother (and who is connected to Sam somehow), but in the process let a few hundred demons out of hell.
So, the set up for next season is that they have a ton of demons to take care of and Dean's soul to save.
The show can be very corny at times, but the writers seem to be finding their way with the characters. The best episodes blend the camp and angst well. The main actors are superb. Janson Ackles from Dark Angel is Dean and Sam is played by Jared something who used to be on Gilmore Girls. That actually comes up a lot on the script. Sam looks terrified anytime anything having to do with Gilmore Girls is mentioned.
That's a great idea! Be able to talk about Dean's mother issues, Sam's inability to keep a girlfriend alive for more than one episode, or the beautiful body work on the Metallicar and impress your date!
Thanks for explaining what the show is about. My brother watches it and keeps telling me it is something that I would like but I just have never gotten around to seeing it. Maybe I will catch some of the reruns if they run them this summer. It sounds interesting and different.

Actually, I think I've dated many with two out of three of the those issues.
