Shapetizer Launches 3D-printing Marketplace for its Beta
The newcomer to the 3D printing marketplace makes it debut at 3D Printshow California at Pasadena Convention Center
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The fact that top 3D printer manufacturers are building their ecosystems to integrate platform and marketplace for downloading and sharing digital design files is far from new for the industry of desktop 3D printers. Indeed, some independent companies are completely dedicated to running repositories of 3D printing designs. But more recently, a new entrant to the market, Shapetizer, launched an online printable 3D model marketplace for its beta.
Shapetizer's online platform features the company's all-inclusive range of 3D printing designs. Once registered, users have the right to 3D print these designs and models as they like, either for free or as a paid service. They can choose to download the design, print the source file in STL or use the 'stream print' function since, out of concern for IPR (Intertexture Property Rights) protection, some files are not available for download.
There is no shortage of websites dedicated to the sharing of digital design files in 3DPI. People can find 3D printing designs of cups, vases, photo frames and jewelry with no difficulty. However, what sets Shapetizer apart from other companies out there, is their ability to allow (or encourage) customers to 3D print the things that interest them. Users can 3D print objects for everyday life; they can also 3D print animation characters, or anything they like. Even more interesting is that some of the final products of these designs are construction or model toys that can be assembled, painted and played with.
"The message Shapetizer is trying to convey is that personal interest comes before 3D printing," explains Sophie Zhang. "Even people who are not technically minded can find their own joy and fun in this repository of ingenious designs. We actually don't dig into and emphasize the technology part of 3D printing. We just want to let the ordinary individual find a new way to explore his or her interests by 3D printing it. During this creative process, of course, you need to use 3D printing, but it is not that 3D printing works magic on your object of interest. It is that your interests work magic on 3D printing."
Giving designers another option and employing technology to create a sustainable environment for 3D printing design production
Not all the source files of the displayed designs are available for "download-print", instead, they can be printed through a connection to the cloud. As one Shapetizer engineer explains, "What we are really trying to do is to give another option, a kind of technical protection, to designers who want to prevent their design works from being distributed and changed without their author's approval. We deeply understand that quality designs are the brainchild of designers, and should be treated as a piece of art work, exactly the same as a painting, a book, or a song. Our goal has always been to promote a win-win relationship for customers and for designers. With this in mind, we are exploring ways to protect the intellectual property rights of designers and their works. And to that end we have worked out a technical solution, which is 'stream print'."
'Stream print' is an effective way to protect copyright, since the designs can only be processed and printed via a connection to the cloud; therefore, users are not able to freely download, distribute or change the source files after payment. This method, however, is not exclusively beneficial for designers, since customers just make micro-payment for print right and can enjoy multiple prints within a period of time.
As with any industry that is closely related to IPR, in the field of 3DP, unauthorized copying, tampering and distribution also drain designers' enthusiasm and passion for creation, and can further hinder the sustainable development of the whole industry and Shapetizer is not a pioneer in terms of considering copyright issues for designs. A Google hangout to discuss the issue of copyright protection in 3DPI was held by Youmagine on March 18th. Youmagine is an organization which has long been dedicated to producing a 3D Printing License system (3DPL), while Shapetizer is taking the initiative by playing the role of technology provider, handing decisions back to designers. As the chief strategy officer of Shapetizer states, "We show full respect to the designer's personal wishes. The final decision is definitely up to them, and they are completely free to decide whether the source file should be downloadable or cloud printable."
A compatible system for printers, an intergraded experience for customers
During the present stage of invited registration, Shapetizer's website is compatible with many types of printers, mostly open-sourceRepRap printers such as Ultimaker and non-open source Makerbot. Its engineers are now working hard to make further adaptions and to ensure its platform is compatible with other popular 3D printers. According to its development schedule, an increasing number of 3D printer types will be included in the compatible system in the near future. Shapetizer believes that these efforts will help to change 3D printing from a tech enthusiast's privilege to the general public's pastime.
The inclusive system can significantly liberate customers from investing the time and effort needed to adjust to different 3D printer settings, layouts and routines. As a result, everyday users will get a smooth and integrated, quick and easy user experience, while saving time and enjoying the sheer pleasure of 3D printing.
"Every effort is for manufacturers and for our common customers"
Consumer 3D printing is experiencing an explosive development globally with the unrelenting tide of new printing technologies and printer manufacturers. With continuous improvements being made in printing speed, resolution, reliability and materials, 3D printing technology has developed greatly over time. For most of the 3D printer companies, concomitant with the demands of newly emerging technology and industry expansion is the provision of good 3D printing designs for customers. Shapetizer's strategic outlook is that good designs are pivotal for 3DPI to build market appetite and engage users. It is as a result of this insight that Shapetizer has expressed a strong desire for cooperation with more 3D printer manufacturers, particularly open source manufacturers and resellers.
"We are happy to provide subsidies and other forms of support to all 3D printer companies, becoming their trustworthy source of quality designs," says Sophie Zhang. "With the help of Shapetizer, 3D printer manufacturers will surely enjoy reliable access to copyright-protected and printable 3DP designs, which are excellent and attractive as well, of course. Together we will create an unforgettable experience for our customers."
Nox App Player -- Emulating Android on the Computer
NEW YORK, Sept. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- With the concept of Android emulators spreading from mobile application developers to gamers and to the general population, people have learned that they no longer need an Android phone to use Android apps. Android emulators bring more than 1 million games and apps from the Google Play Store directly to your computer.
Bluestacks is the current leader in this market. However, its user interface is very inflexible and its home page is filled with suggested games. Its new rival Nox App Player (http://en.bignox.com/), on the contrary, provides users a clean and complete Android (4.4.2 KitKat) experience.
Nox App Player has low CPU and RAM usage while delivering outstanding performance. On Antutu benchmark, Nox scored 61,386 which is pretty impressive compared to Bluestacks 42,464 test result on the same computer (Windows 7, 64 bit, Intel i3, 8 GB memory). With the freedom to further customize the CPU and RAM utilization of Nox, users will be able to unlock more of its potential and emulate any Android function as on a computer. Users can use either full-screen or windowed mode, and the window is completely flexible and resizable. Nox even provides an interface that looks similar in all respects to that of a real Android phone/tablet.
The Nox App Player also has Google Play integrated which makes things much easier. You could download and run the games and apps from the Google Play Store directly in the emulator. From the popular Clash of Clans to the Marvel Series and WhatsApp Messenger, the performance is fast and stable. It has been tested on Windows 7 to Windows 10 and using Intel or AMD processors.
The best part of running a mobile ARPG (Action Role Play Game) on computer with Nox is that you can control the game with your keyboard and mouse. This brings a traditional video game flavor to the gaming experience and also boosts the player's score. The software is also programmed to automatically detect and connect to controller. So if you have a gamepad or controller, you could connect it to Nox by simply plug it in. This feature is quite handy when playing Action games.
Another important feature is that Nox is rooted. This is a great entertainment tool for general users and an outstanding development tool for Android developers. It can be connected with Android studio with ease and is highly useful for testing newly developed applications in a full-featured Android environment.
What makes Nox more appealing is the multiplayer mode, which allows users to run multiple instances of Nox App Player on the same computer simultaneously. In each instance, they can run a different game or app. It's like having several Android phones laid out in front of you, and you can chat with friends in one of them and play your favorite game in the other. There is no need to worry about running out of battery or being interrupted by phone calls.
Nox App Player is also free. You don't have to install any recommended apps or pay a monthly fee for the full features.
It should be noted that the downloaded process is quite slow since Nox App Player's server is located in Asia, but the great features surely make up for it. There is a current issue with some video apps however the team is working on an update.
Duodian Network is a tech startup focusing on Android emulator development. Its main product Nox App Player is a powerful Android emulator that can run Android games and apps on PCs.
From 9 to 11 September, RIMOWA and its launch partner Lufthansa presented the RIMOWA
Electronic Tag for the first time in Las Vegas at FTE Global (Future Travel Experience),
the airline industry's leading conference. The product was a result of the BAG2GO project,
a cross-industry collaboration between T-Systems, Airbus and RIMOWA that has already
attracted great interest worldwide, leading to the foundation of a wholly owned subsidiary
of RIMOWA in 2014 under the name BAG2GOÂ GmbH. Â
The first digital and fully integrated mobility solution for luggage makes flying with
baggage more convenient, faster and more secure. It consists of a RIMOWA suitcase, an
airline app and the RIMOWA Electronic Tag with an E Ink Mobius ((TM)) display, which is
built into the luggage. A predicted 3.5 billion people will travel by plane this year,
almost all of whom already carry a smartphone in their bag or pocket. It is therefore only
logical to connect suitcases to the digital world.
OperationÂ
These days, luggage is still checked in by hand before a paper label is attached. In
contrast, air passengers with the RIMOWA Electronic Tag, built by Netronix(R), can simply
check in from home or while on the road using the airline app - and check in their luggage,
too. In addition to a digital boarding pass, passengers will receive digital luggage
information from the airline for their booked flight. Lufthansa recently became the first
company to integrate this feature in its app as part of an exclusive arrangement. Just by
one click the luggage information is then sent via Bluetooth from the smartphone to the
suitcase equipped with the RIMOWA Electronic Tag. The details are immediately displayed on
the built-in data module powered by E Ink(R). The RIMOWA suitcase can be dropped off
within seconds at the airport.
AdvantagesÂ
In terms of size and appearance, the luggage information displayed on the electronic
data module corresponds to today's paper labels, including the green EU stripe required by
customs (compulsory for all flights departing from European airports). This makes the
transition from analogue to digital very simple. The important information is protected
from moisture, heat, cold, shocks and vibration and cannot be accidentally torn off,
unlike a paper label.
LaunchÂ
The product launch of the RIMOWA Electronic Tag is taking place exclusively with
Lufthansa through RIMOWA stores. Sales start is planned for the beginning of 2016.
The first awardÂ
RIMOWA and Lufthansa have been presented with the 'Best Baggage Initiative' award. As
part of a gala evening at the FTE Global show (Future Travel Experience) on 10 September
2015, RIMOWA and Lufthansa received the award for the RIMOWA Electronic Tag.
The annual prize ceremony recognises companies for modern ideas and services that make
travelling even more enjoyable for passengers - both on the ground and in the air. An
anonymous panel of industry experts awards the most innovative, demanding and successful
initiatives and organisations.
About RIMOWA
RIMOWA is one of the leading premium brands worldwide for cases made from aluminum and
the high-tech material polycarbonate, and it is one of the few manufacturers of travel
luggage still producing in Germany. One could say that RIMOWA is probably the only German
manufacturer with a history stretching back over more than 115 years with a distinctive,
deep-rooted tradition - an exceptional position in the industry. To RIMOWA, 'Made in
Germany' and 'German engineering' are synonymous with outstanding materials, brilliant
technology and extraordinary product design, crafted to the highest possible quality. For
decades now, the identifying feature of the collections, which are being continually
optimized, has been the elegant and unmistakable groove structure of the case shells. The
traditional company is based in Cologne and sells its products in over 65 countries
worldwide through selected dealers and its own stores, the number of which is being
continuously expanded across the globe. Â Â Â

Sony Expands Range of Full-frame a Cameras with the Launch of Ultra-sensitive a7S II
New Mirrorless Model Features High Sensitivity up to ISO409600[1] with Wide Dynamic Range, 5Axis Image Stabilization, Internal 4K Movie Recording and more
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --Sony Electronics, a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world's largest image sensor manufacturer, has today introduced the latest addition to their award winning a7 lineup of mirrorless cameras, the a7S II.
Offering ultra-high sensitivity and wide dynamic range across the entire ISO range plus 5-axis image stabilization for greater shooting control, the a7S II delivers stunning image quality for photographers who shoot in the most challenging lighting conditions - from the brightest of mornings to the darkest of nights.
Additionally, the new camera incorporates a host of professional movie functions including the ability to record full-frame 4K video internally with full pixel readout and no pixel binning, the world's first camera to achieve this capability. The camera's unique balance of sensitivity, control of plane of focus and incredible image quality make it an especially effective tool for videographers and filmmakers.
"Sony continues to lead the industry in terms of innovation in the mirrorless space," said Neal Manowitz, Deputy Vice President of Digital Imaging at Sony Electronics. "With the new a7S II, we've utilized many of our latest technologies to deliver a camera that will excel in all types of environments, producing still images and video content that will consistently amaze imaging enthusiasts, professional photographers and even Hollywood directors."
The a7S II delivers an awe-inspiring sensitivity range of ISO 50-409600[1] thanks to the unique combination of its 35mm full-frame 12.2 megapixel[2] image sensor and BIONZ X image processing engine. The sensor works to optimize the dynamic range across the entire ISO range, broadening the amount of tonal gradation in bright environments and minimizing noise in dark scenes. The BIONZ X processor features an upgraded image processing algorithm that maximizes the sensor's capabilities overall, in particular at the mid-high end of the ISO scale, and results in extremely detailed still images and movies with minimal noise.
Video Master
The impressive video credentials of Sony's new a7S II camera include the ability to record movies in 4K quality[3] internally through use of the advanced XAVC S codec[4], which can record at a high bit rate of up to 100 Mbps. Because information from all pixels is utilized without line skipping or pixel binning, the camera can maximize the expanded power of the full-frame image sensor and produce 4K movies with higher image clarity and negligible moire.
This full pixel readout without pixel binning is also employed when shooting Full HD video (24p/30p), where the camera collects information from approximately five times as many pixels that are required to generate Full HD 1920x1080 and oversamples the information, producing movies of extremely high quality and detail.
Also, in a first for the a7 series, the a7S II can record Full HD at120fps at 100Mbps[5] in full frame format, which can be immediately reviewed on the camera screen and eventually edited into appealing 4x/5x slow motion footage in Full HD (24p/30p) resolution.
Video functionality has been further enhanced with new picture profile settings; S-Gamut3.Cine/S-Log3 and S-Gamut3/S-Log3, delivering wide dynamic range and simple color correction. The a7S II even offers impressive 14-stop latitude in the S-Log3 gamma setting, while also supporting other popular profiles for cinematographers including S-Gamut/S-Log2.
Other enhancements include the addition of Gamma Display Assist, a new function that allows users to monitor images or check focus when recording S-Log movies, and the improvement of the Zebra function for even greater control.
5-Axis Image Stabilization
The new a7S II is equipped with the innovative, highly acclaimed 5-axis image stabilization system from the a7 II and a7R II cameras. The system corrects camera shake along five axes during shooting, including angular shake (pitch and yaw) which has the greatest impact on image quality and tends to occur with a telephoto lens, shift shake (X and Y axes) which becomes noticeable as magnification increases, and rotational shake (roll) that often affects night shooting and/or video recording.
Autofocus Accuracy
The autofocus system on the a7S II has been upgraded and now offers 169 AF points for fast, precise focusing with greater accuracy compared to the original model. The low noise image produced by the image sensor of the new camera enables the Fast Intelligent AF to detect contrast more easily and react speedily even in low-light situations (as low as EV-4), when it's even tough to check focus with the naked eye. The AF performance is also twice as fast as the predecessor model during video shooting.
Electronic Viewfinder
The XGA OLED Tru-Finder in the a7S II has been upgraded and offers the world's highest viewfinder magnification[7] of 0.78x (roughly 38.5 degrees in diagonal field of view) and shows clear images across the entire display area. The use of ZEISS T* Coating ensures sharp reduction of reflections on the viewfinder. Unlike an optical viewfinder, the OLED Tru-Finder can be used to instantly show how exposure compensation, white balance and other selected settings are affecting the displayed image.
User Upgrades
A number of enhancements have been made to the look and feel of the a7S II to make it more user friendly, reliable and intuitive. Its magnesium-alloy body is both light and highly robust and the grip and shutter buttons have been re-designed so that the camera feels more natural in the hand. Additionally, silent shooting mode can be activated at up to 5 fps continuous shooting[8] and there is reduced-vibration shutter movement[9].
The lens mount has been further reinforced to ensure greater rigidity, particularly when attaching third party lenses, and users can now charge the camera via a USB power supply while the camera is in operation, thus extending battery life. The a7S II is also Wi-Fi® and NFC compatible and fully functional with Sony's PlayMemories Mobile application available for Android(TM) and iOS(TM) platforms, as well as Sony's growing range of PlayMemories Camera Apps, which add a range of fun creative capabilities to the camera. Microchip Continues Driving 8-bit MCU Evolution with Innovative New Development Platform
Development platform accelerates design of application functions using advanced peripherals available on 8-bit PIC(R)microcontrollers
BANGKOK, Sept. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Microchip Technology Inc. [NASDAQ: MCHP], a leading provider of microcontroller, mixed-signal, analog and Flash-IP solutions, has announced an expansion of the development platform for its growing portfolio of innovative 8-bit PIC® microcontrollers (MCUs) with Core-Independent Peripherals (CIPs). Designers can combine these building blocks to perform application functions autonomously, and they can be interconnected with an increasing amount of integrated Intelligent Analog peripherals. Because these functions are deterministically and reliably performed in hardware instead of software, CIPs enable system performance that is far beyond traditional MCUs.
In order to further reduce development time with these next-generation MCUs, Microchip is releasing version 3.0 of the MPLAB(®) Code Configurator (MCC) -- the most recent version of Microchip's free graphical programming environment -- and adding three new development boards. The Curiosity Development Board is an entry-level, cost-effective tool that includes an integrated programmer and debugger along with options for easy external connectivity. The Explorer 8 Development Kit is a rapid proof-of-concept tool with extensive integration, and it supports the widest variety of 8-bit PIC MCUs. The PICDEM(TM) Lab II Development Board is a comprehensive development and experimentation tool, with an analog and mixed-signal focus. This development platform, when combined with the core-independent peripherals, can significantly reduce total design time.
"For the last 20 years, most 8-bit MCU vendors have continued to release new products with essentially the same product feature approach," said Steve Drehobl, vice president of Microchip's MCU8 Division. "Add memory, expand pin count, increase the clock speed, and add more of the same peripherals. But embedded system design has changed, and now even the smallest applications have increased in complexity. We evolved the peripherals on our 8-bit PIC MCUs to be more deterministic and autonomous, so our customers can react quickly to changing market conditions with minimal code rewrites and very short validation cycles."
All four of these tools are designed to fit within Microchip's longstanding and free MPLAB(®) X integrated development environment, and can be easily augmented via Microchip's rich ecosystem, including development partners such as MikroElektronika and Digilent. This platform enables designers to rapidly and intuitively bridge the evolved 8-bit PIC MCU peripheral architecture with their application software, making it even easier to build functions and applications.
MPLAB Code Configurator minimises start-up time by reducing burdensome datasheet research and code implementation, while the hardware CIPs eliminate the verification of functionality in complex control systems. Version 3.0 allows engineers to configure both individual peripherals and high-level system functions that combine several CIPs, in just a few mouse clicks. MCC 3.0 also adds support for Microchip's libraries, such as TCP/IP, custom LIN drivers, and serial bootloaders, with future expansion plans for mTouch(®) capacitive sensing, USB, and RF protocols. Additionally, Microchip plans to release a software development kit that will allow designers to add their own "often-used" 8- and 16-bit code snippets and/or libraries into MCC 3.0, for easy integration and configuration.
Curiosity is a cost-effective, fully integrated 8-bit development platform targeted at first-time users, makers and anyone seeking a feature-rich rapid prototyping board. It supports 8-bit PIC MCUs in 8-, 14- or 20-pin PDIP packages, and the board's layout and external connections offer full access to each MCU's core-independent peripherals. External connectors include a mikroBUS(TM) header that supports more than 100 of MikroElektronika's click add-on boards, as well as a PCB footprint that enables users to easily add Microchip's RN4020 Bluetooth(®) LE module for communication.
PICDEM Lab II is a development and teaching tool that gives users a large prototyping breadboard that enables them to easily experiment with different values and configurations of external analog signal conditioning and drive components for system optimisation. This flexibility eliminates the hassle and expense of building a custom PCB in the early stages of a project. The board is also modular, allowing users to design a system with one or several PIC MCUs, simultaneously. Off-chip connections can be made in any manner the user sees fit, and the off-board expansion possibilities include several industry-standard interfaces in addition to a system of configurable connectors. Connections include two MikroElektronika click board sockets, a 16-pin LCD module connector, and a 20-pin custom header for custom add-on boards. Microchip provides several labs to assist users in getting started quickly, ranging from simple MCU configuration to power conversion and Class D audio.
Explorer 8 enables a broad range of 8-bit MCU functions, including human-interface, power-conversion, Internet-of-Things, battery-charging and many other applications. It also has the greatest capacity for expansion in Microchip's 8-bit board lineup, with two Digilent Pmod(TM) interfaces, two MikroElectronika click board sockets, and two expansion headers for custom add-on boards that designers can create as their development needs change. Explorer 8 also supports Microchip's standard PICkit(TM) 3, MPLAB ICD 3, and MPLAB REAL ICE(TM) programmer/debuggers.

Chinese LED Manufacturer, Outrace, Rolls out an Industry 4.0-level Interconnected Solution With its Remote Monitoring System
GAO'AN, China, Sept. 10, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Chinese LED lighting manufacturer Jiangxi Outrace Technology Co., Ltd ("Outrace") recently kicked off its global "borderless facility" program. This features a line of automated, intelligent and standardized LED products which provide an Industry 4.0-level solution. With the CRM+ERP system customers can, whenever and wherever they choose, get a full view of production activities and inventory availabilities of Outrace's facilities across the globe and place orders at the nearest logistics center to the end-clients delivery point.
In addition, Outrace's RFID labeling system allows customers to monitor the whole logistics process all the way through to final delivery. This world-first intelligent customized production solution which is fully aligned with the development trend of the LED lighting sector has been highly acclaimed by many industry players.
At the company's launch ceremony for the program held at its flagship production facility in Jiangxi province on September 6, 2015, Outrace general manager Zhang Jun commented, "Borderless facilities will provide OEM and ODM production management services for LED companies worldwide, with the aim of making green, healthy and affordable LED lighting products accessible to more consumers around the world."
With the launch of the borderless facility program, Outrace expects to make many of its innovative concepts for Industry 4.0 become a reality, including Internet of Things+RFID application systems and the Airbridge automated delivery system.
Zhang added: "Interconnection is the key to Industry 4.0." It is well known among LED lighting industry insiders that in order to successfully upgrade to intelligence and digitalization, highly flexible, customized and intelligent manufacturing products and services need to be deployed at each link of the production chain. However, analysts said that most LED makers failed to upgrade to Industry 4.0, because they are simply unable to get away from traditional manufacturing at a low cost.
Outrace boasts several advantages in terms of making the jump: as a high-level emerging pure LED business with high responsiveness and technology readiness, Outrace has no such burden. Zhang noted that Outrace decided to target the global LED market from the get-go rather than limiting itself to the Chinese market, as part of its efforts in bringing about a transformation of the LED lighting industry and in fulfilling its social responsibilities.
About Outrace:
Established in 2005, Outrace, seized the opportunity that the LED lighting manufacturing presented, successfully achieving breakthroughs and making innovations that were recognized across the industry. Outrace has defined standardization, automation and the ability to scale up production as its core points of differentiation with its peers, and has obtained ISO9001, UL and FCC certifications. The company's investment and achievements in automation equipment are backed by robust support from the Chinese government. As a result of its efforts and achievements, Outrace is now one of China's leading LED lighting manufacturers.
Microchip Continues Driving 8-bit MCU Evolution With Innovative New Development Platform
Development Platform Accelerates Design of Application Functions Using Advanced Peripherals Available on 8-bit PIC® Microcontrollers
CHANDLER, Ariz., Sept. 10, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Microchip Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MCHP), a leading provider of microcontroller, mixed-signal, analog and Flash-IP solutions, today announced an expansion of the development platform for its growing portfolio of innovative 8-bit PIC(®) microcontrollers (MCUs) with Core-Independent Peripherals (CIPs).
In order to further reduce development time with these next-generation MCUs, Microchip is releasing Version 3.0 of the MPLAB(®) Code Configurator (MCC)--the most recent version of Microchip's free graphical programming environment--and adding three new development boards.
MPLAB Code Configurator minimizes start-up time by reducing burdensome datasheet research and code implementation, while the hardware CIPs eliminate the verification of functionality in complex control systems.
PICDEM Lab II is a development and teaching tool that gives users a large prototyping breadboard that enables them to easily experiment with different values and configurations of external analog signal conditioning and drive components for system optimization.
It also has the greatest capacity for expansion in Microchip's 8-bit board lineup, with two Digilent Pmod(TM) interfaces, two MikroElektronika Click board sockets, and two expansion headers for custom add-on boards that designers can create as their development needs change. Explorer 8 also supports Microchip's standard PICkit(TM) 3, MPLAB ICD 3, and MPLAB REAL ICE(TM) programmer/debuggers.
Pricing and Availability
The free MPLAB Code Configurator Version 3.0 is available now as a Beta download. The Curiosity Development Board (part # DM164137) is available now for $20. The Explorer 8 Development Kit (part # DM160228) is available now for $75. The PICDEM Lab II Development Board (part # DM163046) is available now for $100. Mentor Graphics Announces New Version of Open ODB++ Intelligent Product Model for PCB Manufacturing
WILSONVILLE, Ore., Sept. 10, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MENT) today announced its newest version of the industry-leading ODB++ intelligent product model, a single and open data structure for transferring printed circuit board (PCB) designs into data for fabrication, assembly and test. The version 8.1 of the ODB++ product model format provides a unique virtual documentation capability that seamlessly translates all data files, drawings, and documents from PCB design through the manufacturing flow.
This open product model format eliminates the need to create and validate disparate documentation content, supporting all electronic design automation (EDA) tool flows. Users of the new ODB++ version will be able to share all the necessary manufacturing instructions as electronic data, making new product introduction (NPI) more efficient for all partners in the supply chain.
The idea behind virtual documentation content is to replace a disparate set of drawings, documents and instructions with data elements that allow the recipient tool to automate the planning and execution of the manufacturing process preparation actions. An example would be to define the solder mask finish color within the ODB++ product model so that a PCB fabricator can automatically generate the process, material and routing instructions for that individual factory.
The ODB++ product model also includes support for EDA-based design net connectivity shorts. In many designs, one or more nets are intentionally shorted into a single net; the ODB++ product model now carries that net attribute so that all downstream processes can be streamlined and automated. The lack of such net characterization has been a limitation of existing data formats, resulting in wasted efforts between design and manufacturing.
Additionally, content for rigid-flex buildup zones to define regions within the basic stack-up (either unique or within the same region) on the board can be carried forward into analysis and in the actual material-based stack-up definition. This feature delivers accurate impedance calculations, using tools such as the Frontline InStack for this capability. By accurately identifying the physical boundary of different stack-up areas for a rigid-flex circuit, the correct DFM rules can be applied automatically, and rigid-flex circuit manufacturers can easily and accurately calculate the impedance values for the circuit using their choice of materials.
Supporting All Intelligent Product Model Formats
Mentor Graphics and the Valor Division have a proven legacy regarding the lean NPI hand-off from design to manufacturing, including stewardship of the ODB++ product model. A new format known as the IPC-2581 standard has emerged for organizing and conveying PCB designs from CAD tools to CAM systems for fabrication and assembly. Mentor is extending its support to the IPC-2581 Consortium and accompanying format standardization efforts.
"Mentor is the market leader for PCB design software and provides a best-in-class solution for NPI. With our latest ODB++ intelligent product model format, we now offer customers a complete and open design-through-manufacturing ecosystem," stated A.J. Incorvaia, vice president and general manager of Mentor Graphics Systems Design Division. "Our mission is to provide our customers with the best tools and technologies to increase overall product quality and productivity. This includes support for ODB++ and IPC-2581, giving our customers a choice in data exchange formats for hand-off to manufacturing."
"I am very pleased that Mentor Graphics has chosen to participate in the IPC-2581 consortium. Both Mentor's successful ODB++ experiences and the successes of the IPC-2581 consortium make a winning combination in our country's efforts to optimize the design-to-manufacturing ecosystem. I look forward to witnessing the progress of this exciting and challenging effort," said Gary Ferrari, technical support director, FTG Circuits.
Most Widely Adopted Data Format Worldwide
With over 18,000 global members and over 60 partners to implement and develop the ODB++ product model format as the de facto standard, it is supported by all computer aided manufacturing (CAM) systems sold over the past ten years. A lean NPI process encompasses DFM-validated (clean) product model transfer between tools in the design-to-manufacturing ecosystem - it's not just about a data format. Around 80% of all boards used in the world are Valor® ODB++ compliant because of alignment within the ecosystem. The ODB++ Solutions Alliance was developed for the PCB manufacturing implementers and supporters, offering free software tools, specifications, documentation, and forums for users.
