United Launch Alliance Marks the 50th Successful GPS Launch for the Air Force With the Delivery of the GPS IIF-2 Mission to Orbit
CAPE CANAVERAL AFS, Fla., July 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- A United Launch Alliance Delta IV rocket carrying the Air Force's Global Positioning System (GPS) IIF-2 payload lifted off from Space Launch Complex-37 here at 2:41 a.m. EDT today. This is the seventh ULA launch this year.

Successful Global Positioning System IIF-2 Launch From Cape Canaveral AFS
EL SEGUNDO, Calif., July 16, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- LOS ANGELES AIR FORCE BASE -- The U.S. Air Force successfully launched GPS IIF-2 Space Vehicle Number (SVN) 63 carried aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Medium rocket at 2:41 a.m. EDT today from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla.

This is the second in the series of 12 GPS satellites that Boeing has on contract with the Air Force. SVN-63 will assume plane D, slot 2A position replacing SVN-24 after nearly 20 years of service. The satellite is expected to be available for navigation users worldwide next month.
The GPS IIF satellites will provide greater navigation accuracy to users through improvements in atomic clock technology and a more robust signal for commercial aviation and safety-of-life applications, known as the third civil signal (L5). Along with new and improved signals GPS IIF will have a longer design life of 12 years providing long-term service and reduced operating costs. The NIE is the first in a series of semi-annual evaluations designed to integrate and mature the Army's tactical network. The evaluation involves a series of tests and evaluations among five programs of record and 30 emerging or developmental technologies. Involving all 3,800 soldiers of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, the NIE uniquely combines test and evaluation in a single venue, with the goal of speeding the deployment of an integrated battlefield network.
One of the main purposes of the NIE is to evaluate existing network capabilities, including the Harris AN/PRC-117G multiband manpack tactical radio system. For the NIE, Harris deployed a 20- and 30- Node wideband AN/PRC-117G network, powered by its Adaptive Networking Wideband Waveform, or ANW2. The radio network connects a range of military vehicles to company command post platforms and is providing access to applications such as TIGR, FTP and combat chat and is also being used widely in first support missions. The Army's objective is to assess and collect data on the AN/PRC-117G's wideband networking performance.

Revised Smart Energy Version 2.0 Draft 0.7 Document Available for Public Comment
30-day public comment period begins today

The revised draft 0.7 document includes progress made by the Smart Energy Working Group on a variety of topics identified during the last ballot. The draft now enters the next 30-day ballot period and simultaneously, the Alliance will collect comments from various key external stakeholders and the public at large.

I haven't had a lot of time to post new news, but there's been some good stuff happening this week. So I figured I'd post a single news article with some interesting things that happened this week.
First, if you're a Netflix subscriber that has a plan using streaming and DVDs, you're probably pissed. Netflix split it's streaming and DVD plans into two separate billable items. Now, you'll have to pay $7.99 for each service totalling $15.98 for both at the base level. That's a significant hike from the $9.99 that was billed before. I'm in this group and I'm not thrilled with it, though I do understand that what Netlix has to pay more and more to license all of the selections. But I think they need a lot more selections to justify an increase this high. Everyone used social media to show just how pissed they were about the change. Hopefully, Netflix will reconsider. In the meantime, here's an article reviewing the alternative options:
T-Mobile also launched their new caller ID feature. This would be awesome if it was free, but I don't think it's worth the $3.99/month they're asking for it. I think it's easier and cheaper to just let things to to voicemail and it it's important enough, they'll leave a message...
Google began testing the new Google + social media site. I haven't gotten an invite yet, so I guess I'll have to wait... Apparently, it's mostly dudes right now. That sucks. You'd figure since women are more social creatures by nature, that they would have jumped at the chance to try it. I suppose that if invites were given to a bunch of nerdy dudes, then there weren't going to be too many women that they knew who could get an invite.
The Demo for "Catherine" became available on Xbox Live. I'm not one for puzzle games, but this was really an interesting game. It's certainly one of the most unique games I've seen in a long time. I'll likely get it when it comes down in price. I don't think I can justify $60 bucks on it.

The NIE is the first in a series of semi-annual evaluations designed to integrate and mature the Army's tactical network. The evaluation involves a series of tests and evaluations among five programs of record and 30 emerging or developmental technologies. Involving all 3,800 soldiers of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, the NIE uniquely combines test and evaluation in a single venue, with the goal of speeding the deployment of an integrated battlefield network.
One of the main purposes of the NIE is to evaluate existing network capabilities, including the Harris AN/PRC-117G multiband manpack tactical radio system. For the NIE, Harris deployed a 20- and 30- Node wideband AN/PRC-117G network, powered by its Adaptive Networking Wideband Waveform, or ANW2. The radio network connects a range of military vehicles to company command post platforms and is providing access to applications such as TIGR, FTP and combat chat and is also being used widely in first support missions. The Army's objective is to assess and collect data on the AN/PRC-117G's wideband networking performance.
