I've been playing with the newest version of Ubuntu and it is simply amazing. I'm installing KDE now and want to see how Synaptic functions as a package manager. I also will be downloading the server variant of the OS and testing that out.

The installation was good. You boot into the Live CD and then install. I'm going to setup a computer for my parents to use Ubuntu and see if they can navigate it. Gnome reminds me of OS X... though, I'd rather have OS X Smile.

Installed fine on my machine. Pretty simple install.

yes, it is extremely well done. If you want to use it on the desktop, especially with Gnome, consider using Automatix. (except if you have a problem with violating US law that is). I'm sticking with Debian as Debian is what I like and have been using for some time now, but to new users I definately recommend ubuntu dapper.

Yeah, I'll be sure to limit myself because of this reason. I forgot that codecs can be copyrighted/patented...

Yeah would recommend it for anyone new to Linux/Unix . I first tried Ubunto a couple years ago they sent me like 50 Cdz to distribute to friends and such but really dont have many friends into other Operating systems like me.

The company behind Ubuntu is great, but Ubuntu still has some ways to go before being up to par with Mac or such.

Got that right. It doesn't play MP3s out of the box. This is bad for adoption.

I'm sure you've noticed that Synaptic continues to edge out YUM on the Fedora distros. If not, you'll find it is more effective when a package breaks.

Ubuntu is quite nice, but the two times I've used it, I ended up pointing the repositories to Debian (this ends up requiring as much work to fix the differences as it is to get around the problem that encouraged it in the first place).

How is Fedora coming along these days? Is it as nice as Ubuntu?

I think Fedora is coming along nicely. It needs to, it has to push the consumerish edition of Red Hat.
