Sounds like you've got Windows problems. Almost like a runaway process is sapping your system resources until it crashes. Try doing a repair install and see if that fixes the problem, if not you really need to either dig much deeper in the OS or reinstall.

talking of infinite loops, I recently got an unhealthy gnome 2.15 vs 2.16 version mismatch during an uppgrade where a panel applet crashed, then the panel crashed, the the bug reporting tool crashed, then the panel started again, then the applet...
but that kind of stuff doesn't happen on sane setups.
