Core 2 E6400: Good overclocker

I've got this 2.13GHz chip at 2.52GHz so far and I know it can go higher. I'm at stock voltage, but there are memory errors (memory is 667 stuff and it is running at 780MHz stable) at 800MHz. I haven't screwed with the timings yet and I'm not going to push the memory voltage much higher. It is at 2.25V already.

Anyway, if you have good memory and a good motherboard, expect some good things from the cheaper Core 2 Duo chips.

I read that core 2 duo can OC close to 3gig almost without much problem. Man, all the talk about core 2 duo makes me so eager to get it.

The Core2Duo chips OC'd quite nice on air I must say.

If you memory is making you hit an OC'ing wall you could always use a memory divider.
Anyway, if you have good memory and a good motherboard, expect some good things from the cheaper Core 2 Duo chips.

I feel the same way to want one but I am gonna wait til next year; 680i-SLi boards are too expensive and the 650i-SLi probably won't be cheap either when its out.

My memory bandwidth is more important than pure CPU speed.

As long as the memory is running at spec I am honky dorry with that but every little OC helps.

I was wrong. It is not stable. One of the cores crashes Prime95 (but not the other core). I'm now at 2.44GHz (8x305MHz) for the CPU at stock voltage and the memory is at 762 (381MHz x 2) at 2.25V.

The passed memtest at higher. The CPU dumped, though. I can pump the voltage up to the CPU, but since I'm near the limit of the memory anyway, I'll just leave it for now.

Wrong again! It seems that it was the memory that made it unstable. I have changed the divider to make the memory speed lower so I could push the CPU more.

By the way, setting the CPU voltage to auto on the P5B Deluxe makes it select what voltage it needs to work automatically! Easy overclocking on this one. I've got the memory at 733MHz and the CPU at 2.93GHz (8x366MHz)! The CPU is running hot with my Kamakiri cooler. I may see if I can pick up something different to cool it down better. I'm not planning on watercooling this one. The CPU is running at 65 degrees C right now. It seems stable.

a better cooler would definitely help with the oc. Maybe you need a better ram as well. 65 seems a bit hot for me I think for the core 2 duo.

6300 and 6400 are very good ocers because of the low cache

Also alot of lower end CPUs have a great amount of headroom for OC'ing because of their lower clockspeeds which contributes to a nice OC when compared to a higher clocked chip.
