Young women in Sweden, Germany and Australia have a new cause: They want men to sit down while urinating. This demand comes partly from concerns about hygiene -- avoiding the splash factor -- but, as Jasper Gerard reports in the English magazine The Spectator, "more crucially because a man standing up to urinate is deemed to be triumphing in his masculinity, and by extension, degrading women." One argument is that if women can't do it, then men shouldn't either. Another is that standing upright while relieving oneself is "a nasty macho gesture," suggestive of male violence.

A feminist group at Stockholm University is campaigning to ban all urinals from campus, and one Swedish elementary school has already removed them. In Australia, an Internet survey shows that 17 percent of those polled think men ought to sit, while 70 percent believe they should be allowed to stand. Some Swedish women are pressuring their men to take a stand, so to speak. Yola, a 25-year-old Swedish trainee psychiatrist, says she dumps boyfriends who insist on standing. "What else can I do?," said her new boyfriend, Ingvar, who sits.

That's pretty funny. I wouldn't even think of asking my boyfriend to sit unless he was in the habit of pissing all over the place.

As a female...I've never even fathomed feeling inferior because I don't have projectile urine. Seriously, that's ridiculous. It's also ridiculous to say it's due to the 'splash factor' because, being in my fair share of public restrooms, women seem hell bent on urinating directly on the seat for one reason or another, not just men.

Not that there is a particular reason for men to urinate while standing, aside from feeling 'male', there's not reason to force them not to do it. There are plenty of things women can do that men can't and vice versa. What next, will we be blurring out men's nipples on television too?

My sister used to work at this hotel where they had to put up signs that said 'Don't kick the toilet' in English, Spanish, and Filipino because Filipinos were using their feet to flush because they didn't want to touch the handle and were breaking the toilets and getting them all muddy and stuff. XD

The sign had picture of a stickfigure with a really long leg kicking the toilet. Apparently it was the janitor that put it up.

Go to Japan and learn the hard way, Froogle =D For some reason, most of the public toilets (I don't know about personal ones) are essentially urinals in the ground. Of course, I didn't learn how to actually use it and just hunted down some western-style ones. But I imagine it's entirely possible for females to urinate standing up if the bulk of Japan is.

Personally it doesn't sound particularly hard...just kind of tiring. Unless you mean projecting the urine like males do, which is apparently possible for women, although I have NO idea how someone would pull that off without tools...
