For those of you who read fanfiction... Sun Jan 21, 2007 6:54:06 PM#32724Perm Link
Seems like matter what fandom you read, there is sure to be at least one dominating slash (homosexual) pair. Every third fanfiction has something with Naruto/Sasuke, Ranma/Ryoga, Mugen/Jin, Harry/Draco, HELL there's even Sheppard/McKay (from Stargate: Atlantis!) fanfiction out there... Which is why I found this avatar so hilarious.
That's exactly why I don't read fanfiction unless I'm really really bored. I don't mind making a non-homosexual character gay if it's written well, but it never is =(
There's so many Henry/Walter (Silent Hill 4) out there, it makes me cry. Seriously. The only thing worse is Pyramid Head/Anyone...especially James. Thankfully (well, not thankfully) that's more common in fanart than fanfiction.
Whenever I get into a show, I immediately go on fanfiction.net and other sites and see if there's slash for it. There always is. Always.
P.S. That avatar is awesome.
Huh? Signature? What's going on with that signature?
I don't really have problems with slash fiction in general, just when it's unrealistic pairs... Like Sokka/Zuko fanfiction...
The majority of fanfictions are bad and (if you've got good taste) you're likely to find three quality stories in a span of four pages, but whatever. When they make you wait five months for the next season of something people get desperate enough to check it out.
Y'know, personally, I always considered 'slash' to be exclusive to random, out of character pairings used almost solely for masturbatory reasons, not legitimate homosexual coupling or well-written odd, would-never-be-canon ones.
I generally only look at fanfiction to see if anyone out there in the internet lands bother to write the story to fit the characters, rather than rewriting already established characters to fit the story. When done well, it can be interesting (although almost always WAY to angsty).
However, I have extremely low patience reading on the computer (on paper, I read fine, just not on the computer for some reason), so I usually don't read them anyway. But I look, so I can be outraged.
Huh? Signature? What's going on with that signature?
Pretty much fanfiction is a way for people to express what they'd like to see or wish had happened in a fandom. About 70% of fanfiction is classified as romance.
The term 'slash' used to refer to when someone wrote something like: Sasuke/Sakura (which would classify the pairing or coupling in the fanfiction). Slash fiction could also be described as romance between any two characters. Eventually the term came to refer primarily to homosexual couples, but don't ask me why.
Slash fiction (the homosexual kind) has become rampant in places like Fanfiction.net and pretty much rules AFF.net. Ironically, most of it is written by girls.
Many fans and I suspect the authors as well, are a bit disgusted by the crazyness of it all. Who in the world envisions people like John Sheppard (who is jokingly called 'Kirk' because he pretty much sleeps with every alien female he encounters) and Rodney McKay (a nagging scientist who is overweight and deathy afraid of lemons) in a homosexual relationship? Surprisingly, many do.
That avatar is a reference to all that and I think it's pretty funny.
