Time to choose classes and I'm already feeling the weight of next year -_- Old Thu Jan 29, 2004 8:50:42 PM #3698 Perm Link
Ah, I need advice.

It's half way through the year and time to choose courses for next year (I'll be a freshman) I've gone around to my teachers and here's what they've recommended:

Spanish- Spanish II- Honors
Math- Algebra II (I guess Singapore was good for something -.- )
Language Arts- English 9- Honors
Social Studies- World History- Honors
Science- Earth Science (I would never take an honors in Earth Science, it's already gonna be 6th grade all over again)

I want to take some honors classes, but I don't want to be drowned in work (LA is supposed to be rigorous so I think I might drop that. She suggested it because I'm good at writing, but I don't like to write)

It's not only regular classes that I'll have homework in, there are also electives so please give me some advice, this is killing me ;~;

Don't take Spanish. Unless you live in a place where it's absolutely needed, it's just a filler. Take another elective for your elective credits instead. Unless you really have your heart set on taking Spanish.

With Math, it depends on the teacher you get. If you get an asshole then it'll suck no matter what, but Algebra is pretty fun so yeah.

English honors, from what I've heard, is really, really fun. I don't think you do a whole lot of writing either. You mostly just do analyzations of stuff, so it could be fun. Or you could just take regular English.

The others are just kinda "meh" classes that you have to take. Plus, I'm dead tired now and don't want to type anymore. X.x;

God bless:

Ted Bundy, Albert Fish, John Wayne Gacy,
Edward Gein, Charles Manson, and Harvey Carignan.

Here's the thing about Honor's English.
You do do a lot of writing.
However, it's not creative. You learn how to write an AP Essay.
And you do that for each book you read, about 3 times.
And then you'll be doing timed writings over sections of books.
For example, a prompt could say:

"In the passage beginning "He stroked her hand..." and ending "The sun set upon two seperate hearts." describe Henry's view on premarital sex. Use textual evidence to show how you came to this conclusion. Then describe the author's view on premartial sex, using textual devices, stylistic devices, point of view, etc..."

And you'll have 10-30 minutes to construct an essay.

Also, to let you know, with every AP, or I guess, Honor's class that you take, you will have to take an end of the year test.
"The AP Exam"
This could be a blessing or a curse depending on how you view it.

Honor's English is a good choice. Go with it.

Honor's History is quite another story.
Some times the History and English classes coincide quite nicely, for example, you could be studying social revolutions in the 1930's in Honor's History and be reading "The Grapes of Wrath", which you will be required to read in Honor's English at the same time. You can see how this would make for a good grounding for writing essays for both classes.
The difference between an Honor's History class and a regular one is complexity.
In a regular class there will be two causes for the American Civil War, in an Honor's class there will be ten.
Most work out of a college level book, so there will be at least ten pages of reading each night with not very many pictures.
That is, if you get a good teacher. You learn a lot, but it's a lot of work.

I would think you need Spanish for a Foreign Language credit.
Or I guess they call it World Understanding, or International something or other, in any case, I know why you're taking it.
Don't take Honor's unless you really want that college credit. A regular Spanish class will do for the credit you need to graduate quite nicely.

Algebra II?
Algebra is a nothin'.
Go for it.
All you have to do is remember equations, and then put them to use. If you can think logically, then you've already got good footing for any Algebra class.

Earth Science? Do you mean like, Biology? Because it was my understanding that the "Honor's" version of that is just to move you up to Chemistry. Which is what I did. And it's fine, as long as you've got a good footing in Algebra and Geometry.

Anyways, those are my views on the classes you mentioned.
And I would know.
I'm the 'Cakes.

I was supposed to take Honors English and World History, but I switched schools, and their honors system is way above my level. Bwaha.

My mother insisted Spanish was on my list. My grandmother is Spanish speaking and my mom knows Spanish, so she figured it would be easier. I hate that language, I hate my grandmother! Why can't I learn Japanese--I could use Japanese!

So then you're going into 8th Grade?

They have Honor's level classes in 8th grade?
I wasn't aware.
The only things they had available in my school were just more advanced classes. For example, I did not have to take Earth Science, I took Biology.
And I didn't take Intro to Algebra, I took Algebra I.

I've always wondered if she was secretly my mother and just palmed me off onto my "mother," who would be my grandmother. I doubt it though. She had a son about a year before I was born, so it's not very likely she would have had me. Besides, I've seen pictures where my mother is holding me right after my birth.

Heh. Neither of those would rule out the possibility of her being your grandmother, seeing as she could be nymphomanically inclined and had inefficient contraception to hand, was particularly fertile, or it was a fluke, and the photos could be doctored/set up. I seem to have a peculiar habit of making people paranoid.

And a woman can birth children until she reaches menopause (which is around...50, right?), so it's possible for your brother to be 30 (she'd have been 20 when she got pregnant), then have you when she was 36 (assuming she's 50 now). So you'd be 14 and your brother would be ALMOST old enough to be your father Razz
Like, I have a friend who's brothers are 26 and 24, his sister is 16 and he's 15...and his mother's 54. Now my aunt just had a baby (this morning!!!) and she's...I think...39 or 40...
Bah, I just started talking about nothing, guess I should stop now.
