Great Time to Embark on a Career in the Games Industry as New Data Shows Salaries Increasing and Job Opportunities Set to Grow

TIGA, the trade association representing the UK video game industry has announced the
key findings of the 2013/14 Games Software Developers' Salary survey, carried out in
association with Aon Hewitt. The survey shows that for the first time in five years, games
industry salaries rose more than the UK average, by 3.4 per cent compared to 3.1 per cent
(Aon Hewitt's Global Salary Increase Survey (SIS)). With Games Tax Relief finally coming
into force in April 2014 and offering studios up to a 25 per cent reduction in core
development costs, which can include salaries, the industry is set for growth. TIGA's
research suggests that over 4,660 highly skilled jobs will be created in the industry over
the next five years.
A good time to study for a career in the games industry
Research by the Complete University Guide says graduate starting salaries in
professional posts fell by 11 per cent in real terms, which comes as a particularly heavy
blow given the rising levels of debt many students are being saddled with. Given these
recent reports

that university leavers have seen their starting salaries plummet over the past five
years, the news that the games industry salaries are rising faster than the overall UK
market will come as encouraging news to students seeking a career in the UK games
business. With the recent approval of games tax relief in the UK, which TIGA predicts will
create and protect 4,661 jobs whilst also stimulating GBP188 million in new investment
over the next five years, those students now deciding what degree to take would do well to
look at those relating to video game development.
Driving regional growth
It has been established that game development companies based in regional tech
clusters, benefit from having a richer talent pool on their doorstep and the ability to
share ideas and learning. The 2014 survey demonstrated that games software development in
the UK is a great example of a sector that can drive regional growth and offer relatively
well paid roles outside London when compared to Office for National Statistics (ONS)
regional pay differentials. While game software development salaries in London appear to
be broadly on a par with the survey's national average, employees in the West Midlands
(including Birmingham) can receive up to 21% higher wages on average. Other standout
regions were South East England (including places such as Brighton), which pays 17% above
the survey average, and North West England (including Liverpool), which pays 11% above the
survey average.
This can be compared with ONS figures which suggest that the West Midlands is 7% below
the national salary average, while the North West is 6% below the national average.
Evidently, in some regions working in the game development sector is a highly attractive
option and since the recession there has been a general recognition that the UK economy
would benefit from stronger regional growth, so it is encouraging to see the games
industry contributing in this way.
Programming sees biggest rise
In terms of job functions, the largest median base salary increase was in technical
development and programming, which saw a rise of 4.2%, followed by Quality Assurance at
3.5%. The lowest increase of all was design, which saw a rise of 2.8%. However, it should
be noted that design had the largest rise of all job functions in the previous year
(3.5%), so this is likely to be the effect of design salaries balancing out.
Employee turnover down
TIGA and Aon Hewitt's data also reveals that employee turnover in the games industry
has declined. The survey revealed a drop from 13.5% in 2013 to 12.8% in 2014. This
compares to a UK average employee turnover rate, which many commentators have suggested is
at about 14%.

This is the fifth Aon Hewitt Games Software Developers' Salary survey. It has been
conducted in association with TIGA.
This year there are 10 organisations participating in the survey, providing data for
1,298 incumbents (1,549 in 2012). In addition, we also have 348 incumbents matched to
business support functions (347 in 2012), across all 10 organisations. Thus, the survey
covered more than 10% of the approximately 9,000 employees in the UK game development
sector.
All data is effective as of 1 October 2013.
Much effort and emphasis has been placed on ensuring the quality of the data in the
2013/14 survey. Position matching meetings were held in September 2013, when required, to
discuss the matching approach and to ensure understanding of the data collection

Utilizing Sony's unique Translucent Mirror Technology, the 77 II also has the ability to shoot at up to 12 fps for 60 total frames with continuous AF.
The speedy new camera is equipped with a high-resolution 24.3 MP image sensor and powerful BIONZ(®) X processor, ensuring that still images and full HD videos are captured in sharp focus and incredible detail. Image quality compared to the original 77 has been boosted, and sensitivity has increased by approximately 20% as well. There is also a variety of new pro-friendly video functions for movie makers.

New-generation 79 point phase detection AF system
The advanced AF system on the new 77 II camera features 79 phase detection AF points - the most of any dedicated AF sensor in market today - and includes 15 cross points within the central area of the sensor. Additionally, metering data from all 79 focus points is processed by a brand new AF algorithm that predicts the subject's movement. These impressive new features combined with Sony's powerful Translucent Mirror Technology ensure that fast-moving people, animals or any other relevant object can be tracked quickly and accurately in all types of shooting conditions.
The 77 II camera also has a centrally mounted dedicated phase detect AF sensor that supports apertures up to F2.8, ensuring maximum AF precision when using large-aperture lenses. In low light, the AF system of the camera performs admirably, accurately locking on to subjects in scenes with illumination levels as low as EV-2 (ISO100), where even the human eye has trouble discerning details.
There's a suite of sophisticated new AF functions on the 77 II model that make the most of the unique 79-point system. Expanded Flexible Spot mode maintains focus even if the selected AF point loses track of the subject, activating eight surrounding AF points that recognize the subject. Lock-on AF mode lets users select one of four AF area modes (Wide, Zone, Flexible Spot or Expanded Flexible Spot), and can recognize and track a subject's form based on its color and its position within the frame, automatically selecting the appropriate AF point from the 79 available.
For even greater control, the degree of subject-tracking duration can be fine-tuned in five steps (when shooting still images in AF-C mode). A low setting is ideal for slow-moving subjects with predictable movements, while high settings deliver more responsive focusing for shooting different subjects at different distances, such as wildlife or sports photography. AF Tracking Duration can also be selected between High, Medium and Low during Full HD movie shooting.
Other new features include an Eye AF function that precisely detects and focuses on the subject's eyes when photographing people. There is also AF Range Control, which allows AF to be limited to a specified range, and a Balanced Emphasis mode that provides the ideal balance between focus and release timing. Users can manually select any of the various focus modes to match the shooting situation and their creative objectives.
Shoot a continuous burst of 60 full-resolution frames at up to 12 fps
Continuous shooting stamina on the 77 II camera outpaces nearly all cameras in its class as well as many professional cameras. The new model can capture a non-stop burst of up to 60 full-resolution JPEG images at a maximum continuous shooting speed of approximately 12 frames per second with continuous AF (in Continuous Advance Priority AE mode).
24.3 megapixel Exmor(® )CMOS image sensor with enhanced sensitivity
A showcase of Sony's leading image sensor technologies, the new 24.3 megapixel Exmor(® )CMOS image sensor in the 77 II camera features the same gapless on-chip lens structure as used in the acclaimed 7R and 6000 models. Thanks to an array of latest-generation imaging innovations, the sensor now offers 20% greater sensitivity than its predecessor ( 77), and ensures flawless image detail and low-noises performance across the wide sensitivity range of ISO 100 to 25600.
The high-resolution sensor is partnered by the same evolved BIONZ X image processor introduced in the 7 and 7R models. Around three times faster than Sony's previous BIONZ engine and optimized for the 77 II camera, it employs detail reproduction, diffraction-reducing and area-specific noise reduction technologies that contribute to amazing image definition and rich colors for still images and Full HD videos.
OLED Tru-Finder(TM) and 3-way tilting LCD
The new camera features a crisp, bright XGA OLED Tru-Finder with 236,000 dot resolution. With about three times higher contrast and resolving power compared to the original 77, the EVF on the new 77 II shows the effects of all settings adjustments in real-time, accurately displaying what the final image will look like. A wide viewing angle and high eye-point are complemented by a newly-expanded choice of brightness settings, and shooters have the ability to manually adjust color temperature for comfortable, accurate composition.
As featured on the full-frame 99 camera, the 77 II model also features a detail-packed 3.0-type (7.5 cm) Xtra Fine LCD that moves three ways for added convenience. The LCD also features WhiteMagic(TM) technology, which significantly improves screen visibility, even outdoors in direct sunlight.
Expanded Control and Customization
Evolved from the original 77 model, there are separate control dials on both sides of the grip for simpler control settings adjustments. In total, the 77 II camera has a total of 11 customizable buttons with up to 51 assignable functions.
Further, up to three frequently used groups of shooting modes and other settings can be stored in memory and recalled easily via the mode dial, and an exposure mode dial lock function has been inherited from the a99 model to prevent accidental mode changes.
Tough enough for serious enthusiasts
The tough, light magnesium body of the 77 II camera is engineered to withstand the demands of the most serious enthusiasts. It features a dust and moisture sealed design and a large, contoured grip for comfortable handling. In addition, the camera's durable shutter unit is rated for 150,000 total shots.
Pro-style movie shooting with continuous AF
The 77 II camera can record Full HD 60p and 24p movies using the AVCHD 2.0 format. As with still shooting, Translucent Mirror Technology enables full-time phase-detection AF, ensuring accurate focus tracking with fast-moving subjects during video capture.
The camera has a number of additional features for serious movie makers, including three-level AF tracking sensitivity adjustment, a pro-style Zebra function and audio level metering. There's also the addition of a clean HDMI(®) output that allows viewing on an external monitor and recording to an external storage device without compression

PlayStation®Vita System Software Update v3.15 and PlayStation®App update v1.70 to Deliver Greater Integration with the PS4 system
SAN MATEO, Calif., April 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC (SCEA) today announced it will release system software update version 1.70 for PlayStation®4 (PS4(TM)) system on April 30, delivering new features that expand the social connectivity options and make it easier for gamers to share their experiences in a more meaningful way. In addition, the PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita) system software and PlayStation®App will be updated to deepen integration and improve compatibility with the PS4 system. These updates will further strengthen the PS4 system by adding a host of new features and enhancements, many of them highly-anticipated and requested.

Highlights for the 1.70 update include:
Edit and Share Epic Moments with SHAREfactory(TM)
After PS4 owners update to system software version 1.70, an icon to download SHAREfactory will appear on the PS4 system's homescreen once it's available. SHAREfactory, a free rich video editor, will elevate game sharing by allowing users to easily customize their gameplay videos with special effects including filters, transitions and themes. SHAREfactory provides access to a robust suite of tools to personalize videos by adding text and video commentary with picture-in-picture capability using PlayStation®Camera. PS4 owners can also add a custom soundtrack to their videos using the included audio tracks or by importing their original music. With this rich set of features, SHAREfactory enables players to create a polished compilation of their most epic gaming moments to share with their friends and social networks.
Get Games Faster with Automatic Downloading for Pre-ordered Games
Immediacy and streamlined access to content is a core part of the PS4 experience, with existing features such as "Play As You Download." The 1.70 update builds on this by adding the ability to automatically download select games pre-ordered from PlayStation®Store prior to the release, so it's ready to play as soon as the game launches. When the auto-download feature is enabled, the game will automatically download up to several days in advance of launch. As the release date approaches, a new countdown timer will appear to show how much time remains, to the second, until the content is released and accessible.
More Flexibility for Gameplay Captures with HDCP Off
The 1.70 update addresses one of the most highly requested features from PS4 users by introducing the option for PS4 users to disable High-bandwidth Digital Copy Protection (HDCP) for games. This enables PS4 games to be output through HDMI to an external capture device for more flexibility when capturing gameplay, including longer recorded and live streamed sessions.
Easily Share Captured Videos, Screenshots or Edited Videos with USB Export Option
The ability to export captured videos, screenshots or edited SHAREfactory videos by pressing the DUALSHOCK®4 controller's SHARE button to USB drive will also be added, allowing users to share their proudest, most heroic gaming moments with the world on the social video platforms of their choice.
Watch Live Broadcasts in HD or View Broadcasts Later with Archiving Support
With the upcoming update, users will have the option to broadcast their gameplay in 720p HD resolution and archive their broadcasts via Twitch and Ustream.
Additional features and updates introduced with system software v1.70 include:
-- DUALSHOCK 4: Brightness settings for the light bar will be available in
Bright, Medium and Dim, accessible in the Settings menu. Users also will
have the option to control the on-screen keyboard using the DUALSHOCK 4
controller's touchpad, with inputs registered by clicking the touchpad
or pressing the X button.
-- PlayStation Store: Alternative Payment Methods (APMs) will be introduced
for content purchased within PS Store, including PayPal support.
-- SHARE: Updated settings will allow users to upload screenshots or video
clips during a live broadcast, change the default recording time for
gameplay captures, and select only the specific screenshots and video
clips they want to save on their PS4 system. In addition, users will
have more control with the privacy of their uploaded SHARE videos or
screenshots on Facebook, with the ability to select the audience to whom
the upload will be visible.
-- Friends: Find Friends easier and send requests with the ability to
search Friends-of-Friends, view Mutual Friends on another user's
profile, and accept Friend requests directly from the Friends list.
-- Trophies: Trophies will be able to be sorted by rarity from the Options
menu.
-- PlayStation Camera: PlayStation Camera will respond to additional voice
commands, enabling users to launch select installed apps.
-- Music Unlimited: PS4 users with a subscription to Music Unlimited will
be able to share songs by pressing the SHARE button on the DUALSHOCK 4
controller.
PS Vita 3.15 Update
The PS Vita system will also receive a system software update to version 3.15 with the same timing as the PS4 1.70 update, adding some key feature enhancements that will strengthen the connectivity and integration between the PS Vita and PS4 systems. The 3.15 update will enable Automatic Device Registration, which will automatically pair the devices when both systems are online and the same user is signed in to both, making it even easier to link a PS Vita system with a PS4 system for Remote Play and other second screen features.
PlayStation App 1.70 Update
The PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, available free on the App Store and Google Play, is also set to receive an update to version 1.70 within the same launch window as both the PS4 and PS Vita system software updates. The update will add push notifications and allows users to change their profile picture by uploading from their mobile device's photo library or taking a photo using their device's camera. In addition, Friend requests will be able to be sent via email and text messages, making it more convenient and easier to add Friends and grow your network. The PlayStation App will also support iPad resolution with the update to 1.70.
