Canadian Heart Surgeon Releases an Open-Source 3D Printable Electronic Hookah/Shisha
TORONTO, April 24, 2014 /CNW/ - 180 Smoke, a crowd-sourced Canadian electronic cigarette company, announced today the release of a free 3D printable adapter
that allows users to convert a traditional hookah/shisha into a cleaner
electronic version. The adapter is placed on top of a hookah, replacing
the ceramic bowl, and allows for the insertion of standard electronic
cigarettes. 180 Smoke is the first company to conceive this type of
adapter.
"Hookahs play a significant role in more than 100 million daily smokers
worldwide who are largely oblivious to the fact that a 1-hour hookah
session produces almost as much smoke volume as 200 cigarettes," said
Dr. Gopal Bhatnagar, a leading Canadian heart surgeon and 180 Smoke's
co-founder. "The adapter that we've invented allows them to still
engage in this social practice, but without the combustion, tar, carbon
monoxide and thousands of other chemicals. We believe it will help
hookah smokers reduce the harm by almost 99%."
The adapter is being offered open source as a free download for personal
use worldwide under a Creative Commons License.
The adapter works by connecting a traditional hookah with any automatic
e-cigarette, even disposables, which are inexpensive and are readily
available in most corner stores.
"By sharing this innovation and tackling myths about water filtration,
herbal hookah safety, and others, we strive to equip smokers with the
tools, resources and information they need to make better choices,"
said Dr. Bhatnagar.

Rethink Robotics Launches Intera 2.1 for Manufacturing Innovation
Industry's Best-in-Class Software Platform Continues to Deliver New Capabilities and Performance Improvements to the Baxter Robot
BOSTON, April 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Rethink Robotics today introduced Intera 2.1, the latest advance in the company's newly branded software platform that powers the Baxter robot to provide safe, reliable, easy-to-train automation for a wide range of manufacturing and production environments. Intera 2.1 delivers significant improvements to the robot's speed, performance, flexibility and security, making Baxter up to two times faster, more precise and easier to train than with previous versions of the software.
Named to emphasize the interactive production capabilities of the robot, the Intera platform enables Rethink Robotics' mission to deliver sustained innovation through ongoing advances in software. With Intera, new and existing Baxter customers can continuously enhance the value of their automation investments, with key features and functionality added regularly to the safe, affordable, user-trainable technology that helped launch a new era of manufacturing in 2012. As a result, Intera helps customers to continually increase quality, productivity and profitability in their manufacturing operations.
Intera 2.1 is the company's most advanced software release to date, with features informed by input from customers and partners which includes:
-- Enhanced speed: Existing Baxter hardware now works up to 2x faster on
comparable tasks than with previous versions of the software.
-- Motion presets allow users to balance speed and path requirements for a
given task, providing increased flexibility to optimize how quickly or
how precisely Baxter completes a task. When defining waypoints, users
now have three options:
-- Balanced: Baxter follows its standard parameters for speed and
precision
-- Explicit: Baxter follows the waypoints more precisely and in a
controlled manner
-- Express: Waypoints are used as general guidelines to increase speed
where extreme precision is not required
-- A nudge feature reduces training time and increases accuracy. Users can
now make slight adjustments to pick, place and hold positions using
simple commands in the software, allowing training by demonstration to
be easier and more precise.
-- A lock and unlock feature increases security, with user-defined access
to Baxter's task and training menu. Access is controlled with a USB
key, helping to prevent unauthorized or unintended edits to existing
tasks.
"To meet today's demanding market requirements and compete on a global playing field, manufacturers are looking to further optimize their production infrastructure," said Scott Eckert, CEO at Rethink Robotics. "Interactive robot technologies like Baxter are redefining the modern workforce so that safe, affordable robots can work side by side with people to make companies of all sizes more competitive. Intera provides the platform to drive this innovation," he remarked.
Rethink Robotics' customers agree. "For us to remain competitive, we need to be using automation technologies that combine traditional reliability with modern flexibility and safety," said Pete Rector, Executive Vice President at GENCO, Pittsburgh, PA. "Baxter with Intera allows us to utilize flexible automation in ways we never could before, at an affordable cost. Baxter has had an immediate impact on our operational performance."

Exar Offers Wide Frequency Universal Clocks with Ultra-Low Jitter
Superior performance XR811xx family is footprint compatible with industry standard synthesizers
FREMONT, Calif., April 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Exar Corporation (NYSE: EXAR), a leading supplier of high performance analog mixed-signal components, and video and data management solutions, today announced an addition to its range of telecommunications timing products with a new family of Universal Clocks. The XR811xx series offers a wide range of output frequencies from 10MHz to 1.5GHz, with ultra-low phase noise jitter of less than 200fS. Designed for communications, Audio/Video and industrial applications, the QFN-10 and TSSOP-8 packaged devices are footprint compatible with industry standard synthesizers, providing a superior performance second source option.
The design of Exar's XR811xx synthesizers utilizes a highly flexible delta-sigma modulator and a very wide-ranging VCO in a PLL block that has been optimized to be extremely power efficient. With a core current consumption of just 20mA, these parts dissipate 60% less power than equivalent competitive devices, providing a very compelling power efficiency benefit to system designers. The PLL can operate from either an input system clock or a crystal and incorporates both an integer divider and a high-resolution (<1Hz) fractional divider for increased flexibility to generate ANY clock frequency. Additionally, up to four different frequency multiplier settings can be stored allowing for different application configurations providing BOM savings compared to multiple synthesizers. The XR811xx family also offers a choice of LVCMOS, LVDS or LVPECL output drivers.
Exar's Universal Clock devices deliver extremely low, sub-200fS, output phase noise jitter as integrated over a PLL loop bandwidth of 1.875MHz - 20MHz. About Habitat
Set in the far future, Habitat: A Thousand Generations in Orbit is a space fan's playground. Players must lead a team of engineers to gather debris floating in the vast wasteland of human and alien junk orbiting Earth to build and manage their own space stations, including the human residents residing within. But managing resources to maintain a healthy and happy extra-Earthly economy is only a part of Habitat, as players must also find ways to fend off enemies. To aid in this, Habitat introduces a new kind of combat using space debris as kinetic weaponry, which takes advantage of zero-gravity space conditions to defend habitats against enemies. Habitats can be destroyed in a matter of seconds, triggering massive chain reactions, so players must make some tough decisions to survive.

Did you know that you can contribute to scientific research just by playing a game?
PBS science series NOVA launches the RNA Lab, built in partnership with the groundbreaking citizen science game Eterna.
Explore the science of RNA and start building biomolecules online.
Get good enough, and you might help design powerful new drugs.
BOSTON, April 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- For the first time in its 41-year history, NOVA--the most popular science series on American television--is inviting audiences not just to learn about scientific discovery, but to take part in it. The latest initiative in the growing NOVA Labs citizen science platform--an RNA Lab available free online at pbs.org/nova/labs--utilizes puzzles from Eterna, a game that allows players to design RNAs, tiny molecules at the heart of every cell in our bodies. Featuring a series of animated videos that explain the science behind the game as well as tips that teach novices how to play it, the Lab aims to expand the community of participants while giving students and science enthusiasts an engaging way to explore important concepts in the life sciences and engineering.
By playing the NOVA version of Eterna, players will discover that molecular RNA "machines" carry out a wide variety of essential functions in our bodies, from producing proteins to fighting viruses. They'll learn why the way an RNA molecule folds in three dimensions determines what it does (hint: in biology, structure equals function). And they'll get help to become RNA engineers, so that someday--if they get skilled enough at playing Eterna--they might help scientists design powerful new therapies for fighting viral infections, cancer, and more.
"We're thrilled to be partnering with NOVA, because nobody is better at making complicated science accessible to everyone," says Carnegie Mellon University computer scientist Adrien Treuille, co-creator of Eterna. "They've produced a media-rich experience that will help teachers, students, and curious people of all ages learn more about our game and the exciting world of RNA research."
A New Way to Do Science. The NOVA RNA Lab brings together the most trusted brand in science media with leaders in the emerging field of "games for science," creating a new type of virtual science lab. "Teens say they want learning experiences that relate to the real world," notes NOVA Labs Editorial Director David Condon. "When they play Eterna, the puzzles they're solving simulate actual molecules, and by joining the community they're helping researchers gain new insights. That's a powerful motivator."
The crowdsourcing of cutting edge research through public games is a relatively new phenomenon. As a post-doc, Treuille founded the team that launched Foldit, the first open, online game that lets untrained amateurs speed up vital research simply by solving fun visual puzzles. Since its debut in 2007, Foldit has engaged over 500,000 players who have logged millions of hours helping scientists understand how proteins fold into the intricate shapes that allow them to perform so many functions essential to life.
In 2011, Treuille joined with colleagues at Carnegie Mellon and Stanford to launch Eterna, a game that not only challenges players to design important RNA molecules, but also lets them compete to have their solutions physically synthesized in a laboratory. Once again, humans proved more adept than computers at solving complex molecular puzzles, as described in a recent paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Armed with new insights from Eterna players into the folding of RNAs--chemical cousins of DNA that are capable of performing a much wider variety of tasks--biomedical researchers hope to design new therapies that could benefit millions.
Thanks to games like Foldit and Eterna, the line between citizen-gamers and scientists is being blurred, to the benefit of all. This makes them a natural fit with NOVA Labs, the mission of which is to connect young people--the science literate citizens and STEM workers of tomorrow--with the excitement of scientific discovery.
Lauren Aguirre, NOVA's Director of Digital Media, says the Labs fit squarely into NOVA's broader mission of encouraging science literacy and creating lifelong learners. "By supporting real-world problem solving with the visual and storytelling techniques that drive NOVA's broadcast productions, the Labs are designed to maximize the potential for learning about science by actually doing it."
About NOVA Labs (pbs.org/nova/labs). The RNA Lab is the latest in a series of free, online STEM projects for teens and lifelong learners, called NOVA Labs, which first launched in April, 2012. Each Lab focuses on a different area of active research. But all of them illustrate key concepts with engaging and informative videos, and guide participants through activities that foster authentic scientific exploration. For example, the Sun Lab brings the feed from NASA solar telescopes to users, to help them understand and try to predict space weather that can affect us on Earth; the Energy Lab challenges them to design renewable energy systems for major cities based on realistic data models; and the Cloud Lab leverages NASA earth science satellites to help users understand clouds and their role in weather and climate. Coming up next: a game-based Cybersecurity Lab in which players must defend their fictional company from a series of realistic cyber threats. Supporting content for each Lab helps teachers incorporate it into their classrooms, fosters collaboration between users, and helps users make connections to the broader world of STEM learning and careers.

JAC Vapour to Light up E-cigarette Industry with First Advertising Campaign
EDINBURGH, Scotland, April 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Industry Innovators Champion Responsible Marketing with New Creative
JAC Vapour, the UK's leading high quality e-cigarette brand, has announced the launch
of its first major advertising campaign, which will be rolled out across London and
Edinburgh over the next 2 months.
The innovative campaign will position the brand's e-cigarettes as high quality gadgets
and avoid glamorising their use through lifestyle imagery, which has traditionally been
used across the industry to date.
The campaign will incorporate a mix of digital and outdoor advertising, which will
feature 6 sheets, taxis and health screens in GP surgeries and pharmacies.
The creative, which was produced by Edinburgh agencies Firefly and Troyka and booked
by Spirit Media, shines a spotlight on the brand's e-cigarettes, which are amongst the
most advanced and best-looking on the market.
Set on a white background, the eye-catching adverts feature striking images of JAC
Vapour e-cigarettes in a bid to let their premium, high quality products do the talking.
Featuring the brand's signature navy, white and red colours, the modern, minimalistic
adverts also aim to communicate JAC Vapour's commitment to industry innovation, featuring
product shots of their first and second generation e-cigarettes with slogans that
reference their evolution - such as 'Because habits evolve' and 'Full steam ahead.'
The campaign, which was designed to target both adult smokers and existing e-cigarette
users responsibly, will launch ahead of an anticipated clampdown across the industry,
which could see e-cigarettes brands governed by new rules surrounding the promotion of
their products.
Emma Logan, Co Founder of JAC Vapour comments:
"E-cigarettes are not a tobacco product therefore should not be marketed as such. When
smokers switch to vaping they quickly understand that e-cigarettes are pieces of
technology. And like other gadgets, users should be primarily concerned with quality,
performance and reliability - which are attributes that are embodied in our brand.
Our campaign was created to reflect the premium and stylish nature of our products and
highlight that JAC Vapour is a One Stop Shop for both e-cigarette beginners and
experienced vapers alike."
Once considered a passing fad, an estimated 1.3 million people in the UK now use
e-cigarettes and the number is rapidly rising. Designed to offer smokers a healthier
alternative to traditional cigarettes, the electronic delivery devices give smokers the
ritualistic simulation of smoking, without producing any of the harmful second-hand
properties that are in tobacco. Although e-cigarettes contain nicotine, research has shown
that its second-hand properties are minimal and although it can be absorbed from
second-hand vapour it is too small an amount to cause an addiction.
Founded in 2010, Edinburgh-based JAC Vapour produce the simplest, best-looking and
most advanced high quality e-cigarettes on the market. The team's commitment to developing
new high performance products to suit e-cigarette users' fast-changing needs has cemented
their reputation as a trusted brand across the wider vaping community. In March this year
the brand launched Clear Steam - a revolutionary e-liquid that emits no visible vapour
when exhaled, it is the only product of its kind on the market that has been developed by
a mainstream brand.
Notes to Editors
Edinburgh-based, JAC Vapour was formed in 2010 to meet the growing demand for
electronic cigarettes in the UK. It is now established as one of the foremost high quality
e-cigarette producers and a market-leader in terms of quality, technology and industry
innovation.
The company was founded by Andy and Emma Logan, who managed to kick a longstanding
smoking habit after discovering e-cigarettes on a trip to the US. Their success and a
strong personal belief in the benefits of e-cigarettes as a safer alternative to smoking,
is at the core of the company ethos today.

Aventis Systems Introduces "Aventis Bucks" Equipment Buyback Program
Loyalty Buyback Program Allows Customers to Sell their Excess IT Hardware to Aventis Systems for Cash or Aventis Bucks Credit
ATLANTA, April 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Aventis Systems, Inc., a leading provider of both new and refurbished technology equipment, today officially launched a loyalty buyback program that allows customers the ability to sell their excess IT hardware to Aventis Systems for cash or Aventis Bucks credit. With an offering unmatched in the industry, the program is slated to be one of the best customer loyalty programs in the online computer hardware arena. The hassle-free buyback program offers free evaluation of IT equipment by qualified engineers, and pays customers cash for unwanted or unneeded IT equipment, and offers 50 percent more than the appraised value in Aventis Bucks to be used toward future purchases. Aventis Bucks may be spent on anything sold by Aventis Systems, including services, software, and hardware. Aventis Systems helps small businesses who need comprehensive IT solutions by providing high quality, new and refurbished hardware, licensed software, and an array of support services.
Under the program, customers who select Aventis Bucks in lieu of cash can accrue up to six percent interest annually for up to two years on unused Aventis Bucks. At the end of the two years, customers can leave the Aventis Bucks in their account, and although accruing interest won't continue, the Aventis Bucks credit never expires. Aventis Systems will evaluate any brand of equipment, such as Dell, HP, Cisco, IBM, Sun, and Juniper.
Aventis Systems will purchase the IT equipment in its current condition, providing the best possible price for the decommissioned hardware, and will also pay for product shipping and/or product pick-up. Committed to recycling, Aventis Systems also has a program for companies looking to recycle their IT equipment. In cases where equipment condition is beyond repair, Aventis Systems will even recycle free of charge.
"Aventis Bucks is a way for our customers to find value in their existing hardware," said Hesam Lamei, President and Founder of Aventis Systems, Inc. "Rather than recycling or throwing away unneeded equipment and receiving nothing in return, our program allows them to reinvest that capital towards new equipment or even software or support. We want to develop a relationship with our customers and become the industry's gold standard for buyback programs."
Lamei compares the program to that of a traditional lease program. Every three years the customer trades in their old equipment for the latest technology available. This also allows for lower priced equipment to be sold to customers who do not need the latest equipment, so they too benefit from this model. "It creates a computer hardware lifecycle where everyone wins, and allows us the opportunity to provide added value to both types of customers," adds Lamei.
The program is easy to use. Aventis Systems' customers interested in selling equipment simply send an email with the equipment information to Purchasing@AventisSytems.com and the customer will receive a timely response.
The Company is hosting a webinar to introduce the Aventis Bucks program on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. ET online here. The webinar is open to anyone interested in learning about the program. For further information about the program, please visit http://www.aventissystems.com/Aventis-Bucks-s/5834.htm.

World's Largest 4K Video Board, Built by Panasonic, Set to Debut at Churchill Downs
Panasonic Enterprise Solutions Company partners with Churchill Downs to deliver unprecedented fan experience with massive display screen and 4K technology
NEWARK, N.J., April 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Churchill Downs will unveil the world's largest 4K ultra high-definition LED video board on Saturday, April 26, for the Spring Meet 2014. The 170-foot tall video screen, constructed by Panasonic Enterprise Solutions Company, will provide a stellar viewing experience for everyone throughout the venue, including the thousands of avid fans in the legendary Churchill Downs 26-acre infield.
"During the past 10 years, we've invested more than $160 million at Churchill Downs to significantly upgrade our venue and greatly enhance the fan experience," noted Kevin Flannery, President of Churchill Downs Racetrack. "Working with Panasonic to install the first outdoor 4K video board was a critical component of our investment strategy to make Churchill Downs the best Thoroughbred racing facility for all our events and turn it into one of the premiere 'must see' sports and entertainment destinations in the world."
The mammoth display screen measuring 171-feet wide by 90-feet tall sits 80 feet above the ground and offers a wide viewing angle for a superior fan experience anywhere within Churchill Downs. The active display area is 15,224 square feet and is positioned midway along the backstretch and outside the dirt course to avoid being a distraction to the jockeys and horses.
Construction of the 'Big Board' started in December and was completed in March, in plenty of time for the Spring Meet, the Kentucky Oaks and the 140(th) running of the Kentucky Derby. Installation challenges posed by an underground river were solved by digging deep enough to bury 12 steel support beams into 45 feet of bedrock. Weighing 1.2 million pounds, the structure is built to withstand wind speeds up to 90 miles-per-hour. The mega-board is designed to display more than nine million lines of resolution, giving operators an array of creative capabilities ranging from replays, image close-ups, betting odds and race results to advertising, recorded programming and multiple split screen views.
"We've enjoyed this incredible opportunity to partner with Churchill Downs to install the world's largest, first-of-its-kind 4K video board," said Jim Doyle, President of Panasonic Enterprise Solutions Company. "The 'Big Board' delivers content unparalleled in its clarity and resolution, allowing tens of thousands of fans to experience the excitement and pageantry of this legendary racetrack up close and personal."
Mr. Doyle added, "Churchill Downs is a leader in the global sport of Thoroughbred horse racing and has demonstrated a commitment to making investments that create better fan experiences. We share that same vision of excellence and use our technology and engineering know-how to produce customized solutions to make a difference."
For Panasonic Enterprise Solutions Company, the Saturday debut of the world's largest 4K LED video board comes fresh on the heels of acclaim from Guinness World Records. Earlier in the month, a Guinness adjudicator officially certified the company's construction of 'Big Hoss TV' at Texas Motor Speedway as the 'largest high-definition television LED screen in the world.' Panasonic Enterprise Solutions Company has also built the world's second biggest high-definition LED video board at Charlotte Motor Speedway, as well as one of the largest display boards in collegiate sports at Ohio State University. The company provides made-to-order video solutions, end-to-end management of large corporate projects and delivers technological and financial solutions to the renewable energy sector.

Range Networks' OpenBTS at the Heart of Solution to Assist Helicopter Search and Rescue Missions
Iceland-based Rogg Develops Application for Coast Guard to Rescue Lost Hikers
SAN FRANCISCO, April 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Range Networks, the leading provider of commercial open source cellular systems and leader of the OpenBTS(TM) software project, today announced that Iceland technology integrator Rogg Corporation has developed a solution using OpenBTS and Range Networks' hardware to aid in search and rescue missions in the Icelandic highlands. The solution exemplifies OpenBTS as a foundation for innovative and unique communications applications.
-- Traversing Icelandic glaciers: Time is of the essence in any rescue
operation, but treacherous terrain, poor visibility and cold
temperatures pose severe risks to rescuers and search targets alike.
These efforts can involve up to 500 rescue workers, consuming thousands
of man-hours at great expense.
-- Helicopters become flying cell networks: To reduce search time and
increase safety, Rogg developed a solution called the Norris Positioning
System (NPS). NPS triangulates the location of lost hikers through cell
phone signals at distances up to 20 miles by performing calculations
based on the GSM timing advance value and mapping the results on iPad
tablets. Icelandic Coast Guard Super Puma helicopters have been
outfitted with NPS and an omnidirectional antenna, mounted under the
fuselage, essentially turning the helicopters into flying cellular
networks.
-- A solution indifferent to visibility: Previously limited to visual
searches, helicopter crews now have a tool that is indifferent to fog,
rain or snow and introduces a new approach for searching areas difficult
to access on foot or with vehicles. Following numerous test flights, NPS
is now operational, has been used in four large search operations and
has contributed to one rescue thus far.
-- Icelandic government assigns spectrum: The game-changing nature of this
solution for search and rescue was recognized by the Icelandic telecoms
regulator, PFS, and has resulted in a reserved channel in the 1800 band
for national use of the application.
-- OpenBTS as a platform for innovation: Developed by Range Networks,
OpenBTS is an open source software implementation of the GSM radio
access network and enables innovative applications, such as NPS, by
providing developers with access to the GSM stack running on a
standardized Linux computer.
SUPPORTING QUOTES:
Baldvin Hansson, director of technology, Rogg Corporation said:
"We've seen first-hand the risks posed to both rescuers and missing persons in these extreme conditions. People get lost in the highlands all the time, and it's not uncommon that they are carrying their cell phones. Through this technology, the Coast Guard is able to locate lost individuals faster and more efficiently, oftentimes completing the mission in the amount of time it used to take to launch one."
Harvind Samra, CTO, Range Networks and co-inventor of the OpenBTS Project said:
"In search and rescue missions, time is of the essence. When our global headquarters was in my living room, we imagined OpenBTS helping solve these types of problems. We are excited that our technology is able to improve the safety and success of these missions. We look forward to seeing many other great new innovations leveraging OpenBTS."

Withings Launches Pulse O2, Revamped Health Mate App
Updated Wear-It-Your-Way Activity Tracker Reads Two Vital Signs; New App Brings Live Coaching
BOSTON, April 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Withings, the leader in the connected health revolution, today announced the launch of the Pulse O(2) activity tracker and a redesign of its companion app, Health Mate. The new device expands on the versatility of Withings' original Pulse, adding a wristband accessory so users can wear it as a watch. The Pulse O(2) also adds the ability to measure blood oxygen level in addition to heart rate, a first for the category. The updated Health Mate app now features real-time coaching that turns the data from Withings devices into actionable advice.
Long-term adoption
To promote long-term use and alleviate the inconvenience of single-purpose wearables(([1])), the Pulse O(2) is designed to be worn a number of ways - whether it's in a pocket, clipped to a user's clothing, or worn on the wrist. Cedric Hutchings, CEO & co-founder of Withings explains: "Activity trackers have become very popular among health-conscious consumers, but we recognize a responsibility to design devices that are very accessible for a large population to use consistently over the long term. It's the only way they can have a real impact on health." New automatic background synchronization via Bluetooth Low Energy and wake-up recognition also contribute to Pulse O(2)'s ease of use.
Two vital signs
Like its predecessor, the Pulse O(2 )tracks users' activity, sleep, and heart rate. The improved device tracks a second vital sign, blood oxygen level, via an optical lens and light on the back of the unit - a first for the category of activity trackers. Accurate blood oxygen readings can be critical for mountain climbers, athletes, and people with breathing problems like asthma and other COPDs. It's also a way for anyone to quickly assess respiratory function.
New Health Mate App
Along with the introduction of Pulse O(2), Withings also released a major update to the Health Mate, the central user experience for all their products. The web and mobile application has been revamped to provide real-time coaching toward the user's health objectives. Smart Insights help point out users' progress, Healthy Reminders help them adopt the right habits, Virtual Badges provide rewards, and Leaderboards add a competitive element to staying healthy. All items appear in real-time on a new Timeline view to maintain daily motivation. According to Hutchings, "People are done with raw graphics! They want some kind of interpretation and, most importantly, some realistic call to action."
Availability
The Withings Pulse O(2) is available today from selected retail partners and on Withings.com for $119.95.

Sony's New Digital Paper Goes Hollywood with Starring Role as Paper Replacement for Motion Picture and Television Industries
Pilot Program with Major Studios; Collaboration with Ease Entertainment's Digital Start Paperwork Streamlines New Hire & Crew Onboarding Processes
LOS ANGELES, April 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony's new Digital Paper is taking a leading role in a pilot program with select Hollywood studios to streamline the new hire and crew on-boarding process for motion picture and television productions. Starting in May, the pilot will be conducted in collaboration with Ease Entertainment, a leading payroll and accounting company serving the motion picture and television production industries. Ease Entertainment will bundle Digital Paper with its Digital Start Paperwork (DSP), resulting in significant time-savings and increased efficiencies for studios and production companies.
"Storytelling is a global business," said Glenn Gainor, President of Production for Screen Gems, a Sony Pictures Entertainment division. "I travel the globe scouting locations, visiting sets and overseeing production teams. Sets have traditionally been buried in paper, from scripts, call sheets, production notes and more. I've been testing Digital Paper for months and now I can't imagine myself being without it. I can now keep ideas, notes and other great ideas in one device."
Sony's Digital Paper launched in the U.S. market in March to the legal community. Now the technology is set to be embraced by the entertainment industry. Sony and Ease will demonstrate the new production solution at this week's Hollywood IT Summit (HITS) in Los Angeles.
Digital Paper enables crew members to quickly and easily read, fill out, and submit all required paperwork, complete with legal signatures. The documents are then stored in a secure digital format within Ease's Scenechronize platform and retained as long as required. The combination of Sony's Digital Paper and Ease's Digital Start Paperwork will enable the production arena to move to a virtually paperless environment.
According to Ease Entertainment, critical aspects of the entertainment industry such as production management and corporate oversight have significantly lagged in the adoption of new technologies that can offer considerable economic and operational benefits.
"We are committed to taking what is still a 'paper and file box' industry and moving it into the current generation of tools, a key part of which is Sony's Digital Paper," said Michael Rose, Chairman and CEO of Ease Entertainment. "The combination of our technologies will substantially streamline and improve the onboarding process, which will ultimately lead to reduced production costs. The uses in and around a shooting set, within production offices and at the corporate and legal level, are countless: enhanced regulatory compliance, fewer errors, reduced environmental impact and an increased level of efficiency."
Following its announcement at the American Bar Association Tech Show in March and now at the Hollywood IT Summit, Sony continues to investigate and develop new markets for Digital Paper in collaboration with technology companies that serve sectors still burdened with paper and are obvious beneficiaries of Digital Paper.
"The entertainment industry has always been at the forefront of technology when it comes to the visual presentation of its artistic product, from the highest-definition cameras to editing capabilities to visual effects," said Bob Nell, Director, Digital Paper Solutions for Sony Electronics. "Now Digital Paper, offered through Ease Entertainment, can become one more indispensable piece of technology available to studios, removing paper printing, copying, distributing, storing and retrieving from many production-related processes."
A New Way to Read, Write, Annotate and Share
Sony's Digital Paper has a 13.3 inch display that shows full-screen views of letter-sized forms and documents in the PDF format, eliminating the need to zoom or scroll when reading a page. The Digital Paper device retains the context of an entire page by displaying sharp, easy-to-read text and graphics that are nearly identical to printed documents or full-size notepads. The device's touch panel enables users to operate the menu or turn pages by simply touching the screen. Using the included stylus, individuals can write fluidly and directly on the panel, and also easily highlight and erase text, for a familiar and comfortable writing experience.
Key features and functions of Sony's Digital Paper include:
-- World's thinnest, lightest body among devices with comparable screen
sizes (approximately 9/32" and 12.6 oz.); slightly thicker than 30
sheets of paper
-- 13.3 inch (screen size measured diagonally) electronic paper display
-- High contrast display (1200 x 1600 dots), 16-level gray scale,
incorporating "E Ink Mobius" technology from E Ink Corporation
-- No backlight enables text to be read clearly, even in bright sunlight
-- Built-in Wi-Fi functionality allows file sharing over a wireless network
-- Rechargeable thin lithium-ion battery - up to 3 weeks use on a single
charge
-- AC adapter or USB rechargeable (computer-based charging)
-- Storage - approximately 2,800 PDF files; internal memory of 4 GB coupled
with micro SD card slot for additional storage
-- Touch panel (IR touch) compatible with electromagnetic induction-type
touch pen input
-- Dimensions - Approximately 9 1/4" width by 12 1/4" height by 9/32"
depth (thickness)
-- Weight - Approximately 12.6 ounces
Digital Paper is planned to be available in May, with a suggested list price of $1,100.

Cota Wireless Power Solution Penetrates Walls With Improved Distance and Non-Line-of-Site Capability
Latest Ossia demonstration charges smartphone through two walls at a distance of 40 feet
REDMOND, Wash., April 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Ossia, Inc. (http://www.ossiainc.com) today announced another breakthrough for its groundbreaking Cota remote wireless power system. After five years in stealth research and development, Cota became the first publicly demonstrated remote wireless power system, successfully recharging an iPhone from a distance of 10 feet away from its charging station in front of an audience of more than 2,000 people at the Disrupt SF conference held in September 2013.
Since Cota's debut at Disrupt, engineers at Ossia have been working on miniaturizing and improving the circuitry of the thousands of power transmitters contained inside a Cota charging station. In addition to enabling the simultaneous charging of multiple devices and following each device with a pocket of energy as it moves around a room, the latest advances improved Cota's non-line-of-site capability. This new capability was demonstrated in front of investors and technologists by successfully charging a smartphone from a distance of 40 feet through two walls and closed doors, requiring the energy to penetrate the walls.
"Ossia engineers are achieving technology breakthroughs almost weekly inside our lab," said Hatem Zeine, founder and CEO of Ossia and inventor of the Cota technology. "While we are certainly proud of every new technical accomplishment, Ossia engineers are more focused on hitting the next milestone than celebrating each incremental achievement made along the way. So it is truly exciting to see the eyes of highly-educated and experienced technologists light up when seeing all the advances collectively for the first time. The success in demonstrating our current wire-free power system makes all of us at Ossia very eager to publicly showcase the next iteration of Cota later this year."
Ossia's patented smart antenna technology uses phased antennas to transfer power without the use of inductive coils, ultrasonic waves, magnetic resonance, charging pads or mats. The Cota technology is designed to charge many devices simultaneously, regardless if a device is stationary or moving. Designed for an effective radius of 30 feet, a single Cota charging station can charge or power all the battery-operated devices in every room of an average home or office suite.
The Cota technology consists of two parts: a charger and a receiver. Cota receivers built into devices and batteries regularly send out beacon signals omnidirectionally. As the Cota charger receives these beacons, it returns focused streams of targeted signals, building pockets of energy at the exact locations of the beacons' origins. This pinpoint precision targeting of energy safely and efficiently powers all Cota-equipped devices and batteries within its effective radius, even as they move around the room.
Cota is inherently safe. Tracking beacons use only about 1/10,000(th) the signal power of Wi-Fi, which itself is a low power signal. Cota's energy pockets are created using approximately the same signal strength emitted by a mobile phone during a call. The laws of physics make Cota power signals naturally avoid anything that absorbs energy, such as people, pets and even plants.
Under license from Ossia, consumer electronics OEMs and ODMs will include Cota receivers in new products and will build their own branded Cota transmitters. Existing battery-powered devices can be easily retrofitted with Cota receivers, even if they are already equipped with one of the three pad-based charging systems. Other companies such as construction and energy businesses are already exploring non-consumer electronics applications for Cota-based wire-free power.
About Ossia
Ossia is challenging people's core assumptions about what is possible with wireless power. Ossia's flagship product, Cota, redefines wireless power by safely delivering remote, targeted energy to devices as far away as 40 feet. Built on Ossia's patented smart antenna technology, Cota automatically keeps multiple devices charged without any user intervention, enabling an efficient and truly wire-free, powered-up world, that is always on and always connected. Headquartered in Redmond, Wash., Ossia operated in stealth since its founding in 2008, and publicly launched at Disrupt San Francisco 2013. Visit our website at http://www.ossiainc.com.

Casio Showcases Power-Saving Timepieces For Earth Awareness Month
Powered by Light, PRO TREK Series of Timepieces Run on Tough Solar Technology
DOVER, N.J., April 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Observed in April, Earth Awareness Month is a time to demonstrate support for environmental protection. For many, that means implementing daily activities to reduce their environmental impact such as recycling, using solar power, conserving water, buying eco-friendly products, and more. One of the simplest things consumers can do to save energy is to unplug electronics or use electronics with energy saving functions. Casio America Inc.'s PRO TREK series of timepieces makes it easy with Tough Solar Power technology.
"Being conscious of our environmental impact is a long-term commitment at Casio and that is why we designed our PRO TREK series of timepieces with both solar power and energy saving functions," said David Johnson, vice president of Casio's Timepiece Division. "The PRO TREK series is geared for those who live an active lifestyle, yet still care deeply about their impact on the environment because it allows adventurers to take it on any excursion without worrying about plugging in or bringing extra batteries to hold a charge."
Designed with Tough Solar Power technology, the PRO TREK's battery is automatically charged by light, either direct from the sun or from light sources inside - and it keeps that charge for the life of the watch. Watches with this feature have a solar cell and a special rechargeable battery (secondary battery) that is charged by the electrical power produced by the solar cell. After a full charge, timekeeping remains enabled for up to five months. If stored for long periods in an area where there is no light to charge the battery, the power saving function will enter a sleep mode to conserve both power and energy.
Additional features of Casio's PRO TREK series include Multi-Band 6 Atomic Timekeeping and Triple Sensor Version 3 Technology. Multi-Band 6 Atomic Timekeeping technology alleviates concerns about changing the time for daylight saving time or leap years because it automatically synchronizes with atomic clocks in the US, Germany, the UK, China and two in Japan based on the user's home city setting.
The Triple Sensor Version 3 Technology features a downsized direction sensor and pressure sensor for compass and altimeter/barometer readings. The benefit of the downsized sensor means it takes up only 5 percent of the space of the previous sensor and consumes only 10 percent of the energy. This coupled with an increase in continuous compass measurements from 20 seconds to 60 seconds increases the accuracy and speed with which these features monitor nature's elements and how they are utilized for high energy activities across the board.
Casio's latest PRO TREK timepiece, the PRW6000Y, has an atmospheric pressure trend alarm that alerts the users to sudden swings in atmospheric pressure, to keep users constantly informed of the onset of rapidly changing weather conditions, which might otherwise be overlooked. It also uses a Smart Access electronic crown and a unique fly back function in which the analog hands "fly away" from the LCD window when taking measurement readings making it the perfect easy-to-use, easy-to read, companion for outdoor adventures.
About PRO TREK
Casio's PRO TREK line of Triple Sensor watches is designed and engineered to make them essential tools for outdoor pursuits. With technologies including Tough Solar Power, Triple Sensor (i.e. altimeter/barometer, digital compass and thermometer), water and low temperature resistance, daily alarms, stopwatch, and more, they're equally suited for the experienced adventurer as well as the weekend warrior who enjoy climbing, hiking, camping, mountain biking, hunting; almost any outdoor adventure. Casio's PRO TREK collection offers rugged, stylish and versatile timepieces with features that enhance any outdoor experience. Elsevier Embraces EPUB3 Format, Ensuring More Enriched and Interactive eBook Experience for Readers
AMSTERDAM, April 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
EPUB3, the most advanced eBook format, will provide readers with a more
immersive, multi-media eBook experience
Elsevier [http://www.elsevier.com ], a world-leading provider of scientific, technical
and medical information products and services, will move its new eBooks to EPUB3, becoming
the first major STM publisher to commit to the latest, most advanced eBook format
available.
By moving to EPUB3, Elsevier's eBooks will be able to take advantage of the format's
ability to provide multi-media and interactive experiences within eBooks. Elsevier
currently publishes more than 25,000 eBooks in a variety of formats.
"Elsevier's adoption of EPUB3 is a very important milestone in the advancement of the
next-generation portable document standard based on HTML5 and the Open Web Platform," said
Bill McCoy, Executive Director, International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). "The IDPF
looks forward to working with Elsevier and the STM publishing ecosystem to ensure that
EPUB continues to evolve to meet critical needs in communicating scientific and technical
content with accessibility for all, on any device."
Even though the current eBook market faces some challenges to making EPUB3 work,
Elsevier has moved forward with the upgrade from EPUB2 to EPUB3 to ensure that readers
continue to receive the enriched customer experience they require and have come to expect,
particularly as readers upgrade their electronic devices and demand more.
"EPUB3 is a giant leap ahead of EPUB2, the most widely used current format," said
Adriaan Roosen, Executive Vice President, Global Operations, Elsevier. "This move will
ensure that Elsevier eBooks will be prepared to meet reader demands for more interactivity
in the future."
The EPUB3 upgrade will provide:
- Support for audio, video and built-in interactive elements, like quizzes,
self-assessments, etc.
- Improved table of contents: more granular for better navigation, adding lists
and elements (for instance, a list with all tables or graphics in the book)
- Improved viewing of footnotes, citation, and references - click on or hover
over a reference and the reference pops up instead of taking you away from the page to
the location of the reference
- Support for MathML - mathematical formulas are no longer pictures, but are
text
- Improved accessibility features
Elsevier's EPUB3 files render well on EPUB2 devices, which will "see" Elsevier's EPUB3
eBooks as EPUB2 files.
"We're recognizing a clear trend to make content more media-rich as well as
accessible," Roosen said. "As sales of tablets exceed those of PCs, we see the market for
enhanced eBooks growing, so there clearly is an opportunity for Elsevier in this area."
