Santa Fe Public Schools deploys advanced Optical LAN technology to improve students' digital learning environment
Savings from Optical LAN can cover an average teacher's salary
SANTA FE, N.M., March 31, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Adopting advanced technology to prepare students for the future, Santa Fe Public Schools (SFPS) is deploying a new type of local area network (LAN) that uses fiber optics. Optical LAN provides gigabit speeds to students, teachers and classrooms to augment digital learning.
The SFPS Board of Education's goal is to ensure efficient and effective IT systems and operations, utilizing state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure to support student achievement. The new Tellabs Optical LAN at Ramirez Thomas Elementary School represents a major step towards this goal.
In Phase I, during the 2013-2014 school year, SFPS deployed 1:1 devices for approximately 227 students at Ramirez Thomas Elementary School. Optical LAN enabled SFPS to deploy 8 drops per classroom, while saving enough money to cover an average teacher's salary.
Following the success of Phase I, SFPS plans to deploy Optical LAN in 6 more schools by the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year.
Optical LAN is simple, secure, stable, scalable and sustainable. By simplifying the electronics and cabling, it streamlines installation, reduces maintenance needs, consolidates and centralizes LAN management. Optical LAN also eliminates the need for wiring closets and HVAC systems inside the school.
Ultimately, Optical LAN provides faster connections and saves the school district money. Since Optical LAN reaches much farther - 20 to 30 kilometers from its central hub, compared with only 100 meters for copper - additional schools can be served from one central hub.
IT Connect, a leading IT system integrator, installed Tellabs Optical LAN to deliver gigabit speeds to students and teachers at Ramirez Thomas Elementary School.
"Optical LAN requires fewer electronics and less cabling, compared with legacy copper-based LANs," said Elias Bernardino, Executive Director of Information Technology for SFPS. "It eliminates the need for telecommunication closets, enabling the school district to increase space for classroom. It reduces the electronics, power consumption, power backup, ventilation and air conditioning required. Optical LAN is easier to install and easier to maintain, too."
Tellabs Optical LAN, using the Tellabs 120W Mini ONT and Tellabs 728GP ONT, provides scalability by supporting gigabit speeds, future technologies and network convergence over a fiber infrastructure, said Tom Ruvarac, Tellabs director-product management.
About Optical LAN -- Purpose-built for high-capacity, high-performance LANs, Tellabs Optical LAN replaces conventional copper-based LANs. It simplifies network infrastructure and operations, getting the job done with fewer network elements by using passive optical networking technology. Tellabs Optical LAN can save up to 70% in the cost of ownership, lower energy consumption by up to 80% and reduce space needs by up to 90%.
Tellabs Optical LAN converges all of a building's wired and wireless communications networks into one ? handling Wi-Fi, data, voice, CATV, security, building automation networks and more. Optical LAN eliminates the need for future re-cabling and tightens security.
About Tellabs -- Tellabs delivers technology that transforms the way the world communicates. Tellabs evolutionary passive Optical LAN empowers the building of a modern high performance LAN infrastructure that is simple, secure, stable, scalable, sustainable and costs less. http://www.tellabs.com

GIVAT SHMUEL, Israel, March 31, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Cimatron Limited [http://www.cimatron.com ] (NASDAQ: CIMT) announced today that its
acclaimed integrated CAD/CAM software, CimatronE, will be demonstrated at the booth of
reseller NTI CADcenter at the VTM trade show in Denmark, April 1-4, 2014, booth #5107.
CimatronE is used by many Danish manufacturers with great success. Among local
customers is the foundry company, Dansk Skalform, a fabricator of small and complex molded
thin-walled castings. The shop recently performed a cutting job using CimatronE with the
integrated VoluMill ultra-high performance machining technology. The cutting was performed
onsite together with tool vendor KJV and NTI CADcenter on the shop's CNC machine.
"CimatronE with VoluMill and the sidemilling tool from KJV gave us a fantastic new
setup for efficient roughing," said Peter Dissing, Dansk Skalform's CEO.
"It was amazing to see the amount of chips being cut from the stock in record time.
Cutting time was reduced by some 49% with the VoluMill technology and it was even possible
to increase the feed rate to 150% without pushing the machine or the cutting tool to its
limits."
Dansk Skalform started using CimatronE's new VoluMill at the end of 2013, but Mr.
Dissing says that the company has already benefitted from the decision: "We use CimatronE
with VoluMill as much as possible when performing rough operations. It sounds efficient,
runs effectively, and continues to help us reduce our costs."

As the world changes, these new devices and services enable businesses to compete more effectively, make the most of their resources and keep customers happy. This is why small businesses - particularly those still on Windows XP and Office 2003 - should consider an upgrade to Windows 8.1 and Office 365 today.
Ten years ago, social media didn't exist, work happened at your desk, smart phones were not all that "smart" and it was common for small businesses to use a fax machine for document sharing or rely heavily on paper to keep their businesses running. Additionally, meetings were most likely done in-person with colleagues sitting in the same office.
Fast forward to 2014. An office is no longer one single place - instead, it can be a coffee shop, a seat on the train or even the couch. Through tablets, smartphones and PCs, business can be done from anywhere, and colleagues are meeting virtually and working together across multiple time zones.
In this new world of work, there's a big gap in performance between small businesses that embrace new technology and the ones that don't. Small businesses using outdated technology are actually at risk of being left behind: Research by the Boston Consulting Group found that small businesses that are leaders in technology adoption perform significantly better than their peers. The study showed that tech-savvy small businesses increased annual revenues 15 percent faster and created jobs almost twice as fast, compared to those with lower levels of technology adoption.
The same research showed that 88 percent of small businesses believed that new technologies, such as mobile, would help their businesses. Forty-five percent of respondents are using smartphones for business today, compared to 20 percent in 2010.
"We live in a connected world, and today more than ever, speed and efficiency are top competitive differentiators. Advances in technology like mobility help small businesses compete with large companies without spending an arm and a leg," said Thomas Hansen, vice president of Worldwide SMB, Microsoft Corp. "Small businesses now have access to technology that used to be only available to big enterprises. It's an exciting time to be a small business owner."
By upgrading to more current software and services, such as Windows 8.1 and Microsoft Office 365, small businesses can tap into the power of mobile technology to connect and collaborate anywhere, gaining an advantage on the competition. Here are four key ways:
-- Your Office is Everywhere. Connect face-to-face with colleagues and
customers all over the world by using technologies such as Skype and
Microsoft Lync.
-- Go Paperless. Sign and approve invoices on-the-go from a smartphone or
tablet by opening links with web-based solutions such as Microsoft
Office 365 or SharePoint and using a stylus.
-- Stay Connected. Share calendars with colleagues through tools like
Office 365 to make it easy to connect.
-- Review Documents Faster. Leverage Office 365 in the cloud to edit
proposals and other documents remotely while avoiding version control
issues.
Beyond the obvious benefits of mobile technologies, small businesses that continue to rely on outdated software, such as Microsoft Windows XP and Office 2003, risk increased IT costs, unsecured technology environments and more. In fact, after more than a decade, Microsoft will end support for Windows XP and Office 2003 on April 8, 2014, so it's important that small businesses consider upgrading soon in order to avoid putting their companies at risk.
How to get started
To get up-to-speed in the new mobile world of work, small businesses should begin planning their switch to current technology now. Microsoft provides several free resources to help businesses get started - from assessing their technology needs and what solutions will best meet their business needs, to finding a partner that can help them make the transition. Sony Electronics' New Full-HD Projector Brings a Big Screen Experience into the Living Room
SAN DIEGO, March 31, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Electronics today announced its new Full-HD 3D home cinema projector, the VPL-HW40ES, which brings a big screen experience to a wider audience. From action-packed thrillers to drama and absorbing documentaries, the VPL-HW40ES brings movies and TV shows and sports programming to life in 2D or 3D with vibrant colors, detail and contrast.
The VPL-HW40ES home theater projector will join the VPL-HW55ES, Sony's industry acclaimed and multiple-award winning projector, in Sony's home theater line-up. The VPL-HW40ES delivers the high quality, immersive images of a big screen cinema experience into the home using the same SXRD panel technology featured in Sony's high-end digital cinema projectors, but at a fraction of the price.
"The VPL-HW40ES home theater projector is ideal for those that want a larger screen than a flat panel TV can provide, but at a reasonable cost," said Yamato Tanikawa, director of home entertainment at Sony Electronics. "Also, this projector takes up little space and can be used with a retractable screen that is out of sight when not in use, perfect for those that do not want a large TV to be the focal point of their home decor."
The ultimate picture quality
Thanks to Reality Creation, which reproduces colors and textures that often get lost when movies are packaged to disc, users will be able to see extreme clarity in every pixel. Pictures are crisper and sharper, bringing the image closer to the original master. The updated optical engine features a powerful 1700 lumen color brightness for clearer, high-impact images, even when watching in well-lit rooms. Additional features such as Sony's Bright Cinema and Bright TV mode, with SXRD panels, enhances the 3D image even further in a theater environment and brings large screen capability into other areas of the home like the living room.
Contrast Enhancer analyzes scenes in real time, continuously optimizing dynamic range in each area of the image for rich, deep blacks and sparkling highlights. Sport and action scenes also benefit from Motionflow(TM) technology, which inserts extra images between the original frames, to provide smoother, sharper and more fluid on-screen motion with less blur.
Flexible installation
With an extra-wide lens shift range, the VPL-HW40ES offers more options for positioning the projector from a ceiling mount or off-center horizontally, so that users will always get beautifully proportioned pictures. The VPL-HW40ES has a built-in IR 3D transmitter, automatically recognizes 2D or 3D content and offers a choice of picture modes to suit any content. Noise-shaping ensures that fan sounds are at a lower frequency, emitting only 21dB, so sound is unobtrusive.
Pricing and availability
The VPL-HW40ES will be available in April 2014 in black for under $2,500.

Xilinx Enables "Softly" Defined Networks with New Software Defined Specification Environment
New SDNet Software Defined Specification Environment and All Programmable FPGAs & SoCs Expanding Programmability and Intelligence from the Control to the Data Plane
LAS VEGAS, March 31, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- At Interop Las Vegas, Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX) today announced the industry's first solution for "Softly" Defined Networks, expanding programmability and intelligence from the control to the data plane. The design of the programmable data plane functions is enabled by the new Software Defined Specification Environment for Networking (SDNet), with functional specifications automatically compiled into Xilinx's All Programmable FPGAs and SoCs.
In contrast to traditional SDN architectures, which employ fixed data plane hardware with a narrow southbound API connection to the control plane, Softly Defined Networks are based upon a programmable data plane with content-intelligence and a rich southbound API control plane connection. This enables multiple disruptive capabilities including:
-- Support of wire speed services that are independent of protocol
complexity
-- Provisioning of per-flow, flexible services
-- Support for revolutionary in-service "hitless" upgrades while operating
at 100 percent line rate
These unique capabilities enable carriers and MSOs to dynamically provision unique, differentiated services without any interruption to the existing service or the need for hardware requalification or truck roll. This provides service providers higher revenue potential with unprecedented CapEx, OpEx, and time to market savings. Network equipment providers realize similar benefits from the feature rich, flexible Softly Defined Network platform which allows for extensive differentiation through the deployment of content-aware data plane hardware that is programmed with the SDNet environment.
Additional benefits of Softly Defined Network solutions enabled by SDNet and Xilinx® All Programmable FPGAs and SoCs include:
-- Improved, highly flexible Quality of Service (QoS)
-- Flow and session aware capabilities
-- Fully programmable hardware data plane and I/O
-- Support for NFV at wire speed including user defined, custom
capabilities
-- Scalable line rates from 1G to 400G
"The first phase of SDN (Software Defined Networking) enables data center and WAN operators to customize and improve their network in software. In the next phase, we can expect a drive beyond fixed-function hardware data planes. Adding high-level programmability and more sophisticated functionality to the data plane, accessed via standard software APIs, means that networking resources will be managed more intelligently and efficiently, increasing the rate of innovation," said Nick McKeown, professor of computer science at Stanford University.
"Xilinx's introduction of a software defined specification environment to create and modify network elements from high-level descriptions carries implications far beyond OpenFlow protocol-compatible SDN," said Loring Wirbel, senior analyst at The Linley Group. "Significant characteristics of both control plane and data plane processing can be defined at the time the network node is established. This type of tool, which allows system architects to specify and deploy exact application services without requiring an understanding of the underlying device architecture or a complex programming language, has not been offered by device manufacturers, OEMs, or SDN software specialists to date."
"Xilinx is combining new software based design technologies with All Programmable silicon devices to expand the possibilities for next generation smarter networks and data centers," said Hemant Dhulla, vice president, communications business unit at Xilinx. "The revolutionary flexibility, capabilities, and productivity afforded by SDNet, in conjunction with the flexibility of Xilinx's All Programmable devices deliver the industry's first software defined data plane solution for Softly Defined Networks."
A demonstration of the SDNet solution is available at Xilinx booth #2066, Interop 2014 or by contacting a local Xilinx sales representative. To learn more visit http://www.xilinx.com/sdnet.

Split Launches in the US With Free iOS and Android Apps to Help People Avoid Unwanted Encounters
Split raises $1 million from high-profile private investors and is the only "Anti-Social" app to work with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Foursquare
NEW YORK, March 31, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Split (http://www.gottasplit.com), a company dedicated to helping people avoid
awkward encounters, today announced the launch of the company and its apps for iOS and
Android in the US market. Split also disclosed a $1 million seed investment from
high-profile private investors, including entrepreneur, investor, and real estate and
fashion mogul, Christopher Burch; Warner Music Group Director and PERFORM Board Member,
Jorg Mohaupt; international designer, actress and fashion icon, Dodo Bar Or; CEO and
Co-Founder of acclaimed advertising and branding agency Zarmon Goldman DDB, Hadar Goldman;
private venture capitalist and board member of several internet businesses, Alex
Zubillaga; and PERFORM Joint CEO and Board Member, Oliver Slipper.
The Split apps work by gathering a person's existing contact and social information
(as they permit) as well as public social network data from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
and Foursquare. From there, the user selects people to avoid, scans the area for
"avoidees," and if avoidees are in the area, Split immediately provides the user an escape
route to avoid the encounter.
"Just imagine a world that no matter where you go, you only run in to people you want
to meet," said Udi Dagan, CEO and Founder of Split. "The idea for Split was born on a
frustrating night, about two years ago, when I ran into my ex-girlfriend in a bar. After a
few awkward minutes, I hurriedly gathered my friends out of there and into another pub
down the street, where I literally bumped into another ex... Not a good night."
"Split challenges all of the community-based businesses 'helping people connect'. It
challenges the herd - the millions of people trapped and cornered by social networking,"
said Hadar Goldman. "It challenges 'big brother' and the very basic, long-gone ability to
live our lives in privacy, whenever and however we choose to, and particularly when it
comes to encounters in the 'real world'."
Split is intuitive and designed to work in the background, using only a tiny fraction
of battery power per hour, after a quick initial setup. The iOS and Android apps provide
users with a full "Anti-Social" experience with immersive features, including:
- "Who With": Sees who is hanging out with your avoidees
- "Who's There": Scans distant locations and your favorite hangout spots for
avoidees
- "Danger Zones": Prevents you from going where your avoidees frequent
- "Escape Route": Provides an actionable plan, via arrows on a map, to
circumnavigate avoidees
- "Event Alerts": Alerts you if an avoidee is attending an event you're planning
on attending
- "Off the Grid": Allows Split users to, for up to an hour and a half, avoid
being detected, so other users can't avoid them
Split will continuously launch new features over the next six to twelve months to
provide people with a full range of antisocial experiences.
"An Anti-Social Inspiration."
An early version of the app was tested in beta in Israel in November 2013. Within
twenty-four hours, the app reached number five in the iTunes store in social and was
featured in numerous media outlets. The response was overwhelming - people wanted a
technology that can help them avoid other people: ex-girlfriends/boyfriends, former and
current bosses, high school and college friends, parents and other relatives - anyone that
would create an awkward encounter for both parties.
"During the process of designing the Split app, it was really interesting to see how
people reacted to the idea of an app that's primarily targeted at avoiding other people,"
stated Dagan. "At first, most would twist up their face and start laughing. But then, when
I gave examples of different situations where it could come in handy (my favorite is still
'imagine running into your parents on a first date'), all of a sudden a light bulb went on
and a revelation was noted - 'Oh, I see... That's actually pretty useful!'"
Split (http://www.gottasplit.com) is the only "Anti-Social" company to work with
all of the major social networks, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Foursquare as
well as the only one with both iOS and Android apps, available for free download today.
Split is providing people with a full anti-social experience with intuitive and
comprehensive features to help everyone easily avoid awkward unwanted encounters.

With so much scope to create exciting imagery, Gallery organisation has also been a priority for the designers of HTC Sense, who have introduced Image match, a visual search tool that intuitively moves all the photos containing a particular subject into one album.
Finally the new HTC One (M8) has also integrated Slow Motion mode, which lets you shoot HD slow-motion video and then edit that video so you can slow down the action at the part you want -- perfect for adding drama or for highlighting a moment.
With the Smart Sensor Hub, the new HTC One (M8) boasts capabilities that give the product a sixth sense. For example, Motion Launch(TM) is immediately able to detect its position and movement that allow you to interact with the phone without turning on the screen. A simple swipe will activate the device, Auto Answer allows you to answer a call by putting the phone to your ear without touching the screen -- a handy tool if the phone rings when you are digging the garden or washing the dishes -- and a double tap turns the lock screen on and off.
Beautifully designed inside and out
Achieving another breakthrough in design and quality with the new HTC One (M8), the phone's body has been re-crafted to create an even more stunning yet approachable look. The beautiful, durable, high quality metal unibody flows right up to the 5-inch, Full HD (1080p) display, tapering to thinner edges, with softer curves for a smooth, and more natural grip.
Supported by the Qualcomm(TM) Snapdragon(R) 801 processor with 2.5 GHz quad-core CPUs and fully integrated 4G LTE with mainland China, Taiwan and most of the major country, providing ultimate speed of mobile internet experience when roaming. Running Android and the all-new HTC Sense(TM) 6, completely redesigned with a cleaner, more striking visual style, HTC Sense(TM) 6 features bold, customizable colour themes and delivers a more intuitive, personalized user experience.
Enjoy 4G LTE seamless connectivity experience around the world
HTC One (M8) supports FDD/TDD dual mode LTE & multiple frequencies that are compatible with LTE networks in mainland China, Hong Kong and many other places around the world, allowing users to enjoy seamless connectivity inside or outside Hong Kong. Also, HTC One (M8) supports download speed up to 150Mps LTE CAT. 4 mode so as to provide users a speedy and smooth experience in Internet browsing and movie streaming etc.
Zoe in the cloud
In 2014, Zoe(TM) will evolve into a cloud-based service. Upload Zoe(TM) Videos for all to see, and invite friends to add their own photos, videos and music to share incredible highlight reels of classic moments.
HTC Dot View(TM) case -- protect your phone with retro flair
Taking that sixth sense functionality one step further you can extend Motion Launch(TM) by double tapping the dot view case, in addition to checking the time, weather, new texts, emails and calls -- without touching or revealing the screen. An outstanding phone deserves a case that protects and extends its innovative design and industry-leading functionality. Optimized by HTC Sense(TM) 6, the new HTC Dot View(TM) phone case protects the screen, whilst displaying notifications and interactions in a retro, dot-matrix style.
Extreme Power Saving Mode -- extra standby time at no extra cost
The innovation doesn't end there, as we are also changing how people use their phone battery. With the original HTC One, HTC optimized power consumption so that you could get the most out of your phone. The new HTC One (M8) takes this to a whole new level making the battery power last 40% longer. Whilst normal power saving mode delivers a great experience, we have also included an Extreme Power saving mode that makes your battery last even longer. Fully charged it will deliver 14 days' worth of battery power, whilst still allowing you to receive calls, texts and emails -- perfect for when you are travelling. Activated either manually or automatically, it delivers 60 hours of extra standby time at 20% power, 30 hours at 10% power and 15 hours at 5% power so, whether you are out late at night or hiking in the mountains, you never have to worry about running out of battery again.
HTC BoomSound(TM) gets bigger
The new HTC One (M8) again takes the smartphone audio experience to new heights. The latest HTC BoomSound(TM) technology creates an immersive, powerful, crystal-clear sound with rich tones from bass through to treble. Delivering sound that is 25% louder than the HTC One, without compromising quality, the new HTC One (M8) has dual frontal stereo speakers with a new amplifier, redesigned speaker chambers and a tailored audio profile for a truly high definition experience.
HTC BlinkFeed -- Your news direct to your home screen
HTC BlinkFeed(TM) is now more intuitive, with continuous scrolling for a fluid browsing experience, adaptable tiles and a new layout that presents articles in a clean, easy-to-read way. TURBOSOUND Turns To Audio Precision For Loudspeaker Design and Test
MUSIC Group deploys APx instruments to become world's largest pro audio user of Audio Precision analyzers
BEAVERTON, Ore., March 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --Audio Precision, the recognized standard in audio test, announces a significant investment in Audio Precision test instruments by MUSIC Group for use in the design and production of TURBOSOUND products.
TURBOSOUND joins other MUSIC Group brands using Audio Precision
Following in the footsteps of Music Group's other industry-leading pro audio brands MIDAS and KLARK TEKNIK, British loudspeaker icon TURBOSOUND has purchased Audio Precision (AP) test instruments for use in their new UK research, development and manufacturing facility in Kidderminster. APx audio analyzers will now test every single TURBOSOUND product, from the earliest concept stage, to final production - ensuring the highest standards of sonic performance and reliability.
New AP electro-acoustic test suites raise standards in loudspeaker test
Leveraging the powerful new electro-acoustic test software for APx, the Production Engineering Testing UK team has designed an extensive, automated software package for the state-of-the-art APx Series - a move that will raise TURBOSOUND's already impressive testing standards to an unprecedented level.
MUSIC Group founder and CEO Uli Behringer had the following to say, "We have invested in a $4 million dollar (USD) state-of-the art building in Manchester to house our high-tech research and development center, where the staff has grown from 8 to over 70 in less than three years, and we are continuing to recruit in an effort to create the very best products in the pro audio world."
"We are very excited to continue working with the MUSIC Group," says AP President David Schmoldt. "They have achieved remarkable success in pro audio, and we are proud to be a part of that story. AP is expanding the definition of audio test to cover all aspects of the signal chain using a single platform from analog through digital and electro-acoustics, and the work done at TURBOSOUND exemplifies this converged approach."
