Maxatec's Tuffscreen Protects Lothian and Borders Police PDAs
ALTRINCHAM, England, January 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

Lothian and Borders Police has taken delivery of special screen protectors from
Maxatec for the force's entire 2000 Bluebird Pidion BM-170 PDAs
[http://www.maxatec-europe.com/pidion-bm-170-2 ]. The Tuffscreen Screen Impact Protector
further enhances the robustness and utility of the mobile devices supplied by Maxatec that
the force uses as its paperless system for frontline policing. The screen protection
system minimises screen breakages and provides tactile response, sensitivity and visual
clarity, thereby becoming an integral part of the screen rather than a typical aftermarket
stick on accessory.
The force is pleased with the protectors as it gives peace of mind when using the PDAs
it rigorously researched before purchasing from Maxatec.
"Tuffscreen is an excellent product for our PDAs. Maxatec demonstrated how it would be
a perfect match for our demanding frontline work with the devices. We understand that
Maxatec has used it in other challenging applications, including on handheld terminals
used by airlines. We looked at other products but nothing meets the same specification of
Tuffscreen, enabling the touchscreens to work as they should, reduce the glare of LCD and
provide such a high level of protection," says Tom Muir, Mobile Data Manager, Lothian and
Borders Police.
With such a large fleet of PDAs in the field, the force wants to maximise their use
and benefits, therefore it is imperative that as few devices as possible suffer breakages.
Plus, with Tuffscreen the force is able to avoid the labour and parts costs associated
with repairing broken screens, which could be as much as GBP500 plus the impact of
downtime on productivity and the force's real-time electronic data management system.
The unique Tuffscreen retrofit screen-protection system is suitable for protecting all
types of mobile computers, including those with resistive touchscreens. It is a dual-layer
screen protector that provides impact and scratch resistance, while reducing glare. It
comprises a hard-coated film bonded to a colourless, transparent gel that provides shock
absorption and self-adhesion to the device screen.
Tests by the manufacturer show that the user-friendly product improves screen
ruggedness and prevents damage when a 70g weight is dropped onto the screen from as high
as six feet. Unlike traditional screen protectors that need changing on a regular basis as
they eventually scratch and become dull due to wear and tear, Tuffscreen is intended as a
fit and forget product that gives years of service before replacement.

Adspace Digital Mall Network Partners With AccuWeather To Deliver Custom Weather Content To Digital Mall Network
NEW YORK, Jan. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Adspace Networks is partnering with AccuWeather, the leading multimedia weather information source worldwide, to bring local weather forecasts to the Adspace Digital Mall Network nationwide.
AccuWeather will provide mall-specific content including daily weather reports and automated updates for weather alerts such as Severe Weather (snow/rain), Pollen Count, or an Excessive Heat Advisory.
"Our programming research shows that nearly 70 percent of our shoppers want to see quick local weather updates, including severe weather alerts," said Bill Ketcham, Executive Vice President and CMO, Adspace Networks. "Content drives our viewing and ad awareness levels. AccuWeather completes the trifecta of desirable programming--what's on sale, mall events and weather."
The AccuWeather content will integrate into 15-second-spots that can be sponsored by advertisers. This is particularly relevant to seasonal advertisers such as: pharmaceutical companies, automotive, home improvement and retailers.
"The combination of AccuWeather, the world's best-known and most widely-used source of weather information, with Adspace Digital Mall Network, the largest place-based digital network, creates a powerful advertising platform that reaches shoppers on the path to purchase," said Ryan Ayres Vice President of Place-Based Media Ad Sales. "Because weather is the most-requested news item on place-based media, the superior accuracy of the branded AccuWeather forecast is proven means to maximize viewership."
"We are able to generate a real-time campaign for brands based on the weather triggers, such as a pending storm front or an excessive heat advisory. Even a high pollen count could trigger a sponsorship for an allergy medication, for example," continued Mr. Ketcham.

GlowTouch Technologies to Spotlight New Offering Built on Amazon Web Services at Annual Parallels Summit in Vegas
LOUISVILLE, Ky., Jan. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- GlowTouch Technologies (http://www.glowtouch.com), an award-winning IT services firm providing custom application development and technology integration services to businesses around the globe, today announced it will be showcasing its new offering consisting of Deployment, Consulting, and Managed Services enabling Parallels Automation platform environments running on Amazon Web Services (AWS) at the 2013 Parallels Summit February 4-6 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada.
GlowTouch recently became an AWS Partner Network (APN) Consulting Partner and worked with Parallels and AWS to implement the Parallels Automation platform built on AWS. GlowTouch designed a fully-functioning Parallels Automation lab environment built on AWS that could be used by service providers to host and deliver a wide range of Application Packaging Standard (APS) enabled applications.
"Utilizing AWS to deploy Parallels Automation environments for clients represents a new delivery paradigm focused on scalability and long-term customer value," said Vidya Ravichandran, President of GlowTouch Technologies. "Leveraging the agile and versatile AWS platform will allow us to arm service providers with a robust Parallels Automation environment that can help them better serve their small-and-medium (SMB) customers through faster time to market."
GlowTouch provides key capabilities for enterprise-level service providers to quickly deploy and operate a Parallels Automation environment that is constructed using a purely cloud-based infrastructure. This deployment underscores a growing sentiment among tech executives that cloud infrastructure can offer enterprises more flexible and secure technology environments. As a result, enterprises can now focus on their core value proposition rather than on maintaining physical servers, networking gear, and other underlying data center equipment.
"AWS allows businesses of all sizes to devote more attention to innovation and less time to non-critical infrastructure management," said Terry Wise, Head of Worldwide Partner Ecosystem, AWS. "AWS presents a great opportunity for enterprise service providers to capitalize on cloud-based infrastructure to serve their customer's diverse set of end user applications."
GlowTouch will be meeting with service providers in its booth (#505) to educate them on the benefits of AWS as an infrastructure foundation for running their Parallels Automation initiatives.
"The continued adoption of Parallels Automation to simplify business operations and resource provisioning for service providers reflects a growing consensus among the market that robust automation and seamless delivery are must-haves for a profitable cloud services portfolio," said John Zanni, Vice President of Service Provider Marketing and Alliances at Parallels. "Rapidly deploying Parallels Automation via this newly announced GlowTouch service built on AWS enables service providers to reduce their time-to-market and shift expenses from CAPEX to an OPEX model while focusing on customer acquisition and providing excellent service and support."
Parallels Automation allows service providers to better serve their SMB customers by rapidly offering a rich catalog of cloud services. Parallels Automation gives SMBs easy-to-use control panels to manage everything they consume from the cloud.
As a Certified Parallels System Integrator, GlowTouch works closely with Parallels to help service providers and independent software vendors (ISV's) capitalize on the booming cloud services industry, a market that is expected to double to nearly $207 billion by 2016 according to leading analyst firm Gartner.

West Bend Mutual Insurance Company - The Silver Lining(R) - selects RC Inspection from Risk Control Technologies
RC Inspection to support insurer's goal of increasing effectiveness and
efficiency of loss control operations
TORONTO, Jan. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ - Risk Control Technologies Inc., the
industry-leading provider of loss control software solutions for
insurers, today announced that West Bend Mutual Insurance Company
("West Bend") has selected the RC Inspection software solution to
streamline its loss prevention operations. West Bend is a large,
Midwest-based property/casualty insurer, specializing in home, auto,
business, and specialty insurance, with more than $700 million in
annual direct written premium.
"When we identified the need for a system to help enhance the
consistency and efficiency of our loss prevention processes, we weren't
sure if there was a solution out there to support this. When we found
RC Inspection, it was exactly what we were looking for from a
functionality perspective, with the added benefits of being very
flexible and configurable to adapt to our needs as they change over
time," said Chuck Henry, Loss Prevention Manager of West Bend.
RC Inspection is a complete end-to-end loss control management system
which will allow West Bend to:
-- Automate its loss prevention survey processes to reduce manual
tasks.
-- Improve the quality and consistency of survey reports delivered
to key stakeholders.
-- More effectively track and follow-up on outstanding
recommendations which affect risk profiles.
-- Provide its underwriting team with high quality, timely data in
support of decision-making.
-- Eliminate paper loss control files.
-- Enhance data-mining and reporting around loss control data.
-- Equip field loss prevention team with tablet devices to
increase overall productivity.
One of the phases of the implementation of RC Inspection at West Bend
will involve the deployment of tablet devices to the field staff, which
will be loaded with the RC Inspection field application for field data
collection. This will allow the field staff to collect risk data,
photos, recommendations and diagrams in the field, even in locations
without mobile broadband connections. Once data is collected in the
field, it is then uploaded into a central database which allows
underwriters to utilize the information in making underwriting
decisions. This central data repository also offers data mining and
reporting capabilities which have traditionally been unavailable in the
paper-based loss control environment in which most insurers operate.
"We could not be more pleased to have been selected by West Bend for
this project," said David Da Costa of Risk Control Technologies. "Loss
prevention plays a major role in their business and we look forward to
working with their team to further strengthen these initiatives."

Texas Instruments expands portfolio of fully integrated systems-on-chip (SoCs) for polyphase smart meters
New metering SoCs provide developers with best-in-class accuracy, largest integrated memory and advanced anti-tampering protection
SAN DIEGO, Jan. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- A leading innovator of energy management, communication and control solutions for the smart grid, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NASDAQ: TXN) today announced 60 new fully integrated metering SoCs to be demonstrated at DistribuTECH 2013. The MSP430F677x SoCs can achieve electricity measurement accuracy that meets or exceeds global regulatory requirements for smart polyphase e-meters including IEC 62053-22 and ANSI C12.20 Class 0.2 standards. In addition, the large integrated memory on MSP430F677x SoCs enables more sophisticated metering features; while advanced anti-tampering protection helps electric utilities prevent power theft and meter manipulation.
To achieve the highest level of meter accuracy, an enhanced analog front end (AFE) with up to seven 24-bit sigma-delta data converters on the MSP430F677x SoCs provides class-leading accuracy across a full 2000:1 input current range throughout -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C. Combined with up to 512KB Flash and 32KB SRAM memory integrated on-chip, developers can incorporate more sophisticated metering features like dynamic pricing tables for time of use, large buffer for interval data, DLMS/COSEM for meter data formatting, and communication stacks for both wired and wireless protocols.
To protect electric utilities from energy theft and meter manipulation, the MSP430F677x SoCs include several advanced anti-tamper protection features. For example, dedicated pins associated with the on-chip real-time clock (RTC) detect and time-stamp meter tampering so utilities can easily track, reduce and prevent additional meter corruption. In addition, a 128-bit hardware-accelerated Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) module speeds encryption time compared to a traditional software implementation, improving meter security, performance and reducing energy consumption.
The new MSP430F677x SoCs, along with accompanying software support, make development quicker and more affordable. The free MSP430(TM) Energy Library code performs all of the polyphase meter calculations for energy and power that are required for ANSI/IEC qualified meters and provides an easy starting point for customers developing utility meter products. For more information on the new MSP430F677x SoCs, visit http://www.ti.com/f677x-pr-lp.
Additional features and benefits of MSP430F677x SoCs:
-- Increased memory density allows developers to connect to wired and
wireless communications standards including ZigBee, wM-Bus, PRIME,
G3-PLC and RF mesh networks.
-- Six configurable serial communications peripherals allow combination of
four UART, six SPI or two I2C ports to allow connectivity to multiple
wired communication standards.
-- Integrated display drivers support 8-Mux 320-segment LCD controller
enabling more detailed displays and extended language support.
-- 128-bit hardware-accelerated AES module speeds encryption time compared
to a traditional software implementation and allows for secured wired
and wireless communication.
Pricing and availability
Developers can immediately begin evaluating MSP430F677x SoCs with the EVM430-F6779 polyphase e-metering evaluation module for USD $299. Polyphase MSP430F677x (AES) SoCs and MSP430F6779x (non-AES) SoCs start at $6.60 for 1Ku units. Please contact your TI Smart Grid sales representative for more order information.

New 30 GHz Probing System Ideal for 4th Generation Serial Data Measurements
New P7600 Series provides Differential Signaling Support for Emerging Standards like PCI Express® 4.0.
BEAVERTON, Ore., Jan. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Tektronix, Inc., the world's leading manufacturer of oscilloscopes, today announced the industry's lowest noise and highest bandwidth 30 GHz probing system with coaxial connectors. The new P7600 Series Probing System features probe-specific DSP filters that enhance performance and minimize noise levels. When paired with the Tektronix DPO/DSA73304D oscilloscope, the P7600 Series Probing System provides connectivity and signal fidelity for high speed differential signal measurements on serial bus designs like PCI Express.
For high-speed serial data standards, designers are employing differential signaling which can be more efficiently acquired on an oscilloscope using the mini-coaxial differential probing method being announced today. The new P7600 Series includes two direct connect 2.92mm coaxial inputs, enabling conversion of an incoming differential signal pair to a single oscilloscope input channel. This enables up to 30 GHz differential measurement capability on all 4 DPO/DSA73304D oscilloscope channels. Efficient utilization of oscilloscope channels enables multi-lane serial bus acquisitions and/or simultaneous acquisition of high speed data alongside other system activity like 100 MHz reference clocks or chip-to-chip bus traffic like I(2)C. The P7600 Series also includes critical TriMode((TM)) functionality that provides full support of differential measurements found in high-speed serial signals, along with independent single-ended and direct common mode measurements through the same probe connection. In addition, Tektronix also provides industry leading 30 GHz bandwidth for its solder-in connectors.
"TriMode probes have proven to be extremely popular among our customers because they enhance productivity--setting up a probe can be a time consuming activity and TriMode probes speed up signal acquisition," said Brian Reich, general manager, Performance Oscilloscopes, Tektronix. "In addition to a broad family of TriMode probes, we now have the industry's fastest TriMode probes and the ultra-high-performance oscilloscopes our customers need for their most demanding serial bus measurement challenges."
TriMode probing improves productivity by reducing setup time on standards tests for serial buses like PCI Express, Serial Attached SCSI and Thunderbolt that require both common-mode and differential signaling measurements. With TriMode, only one connection to the DUT is needed. Switching between differential mode [A-B], single-ended mode [A-Gnd, B-Gnd], and common mode [((A+B)/2)-Gnd] is accomplished through a single button press.
To provide a clean frequency response through the probing system, the new P7600 Series TriMode probing system utilizes probe-specific S parameter data. When connected to a DSA/DPO70000D Series Oscilloscope, the probe transfers this data to the instrument to create a specific DSP bandpass filter. Probe specific filters are critical as bandwidth increases, because at 30 GHz even small variations in the signal path can lead to significant variations in frequency response.
Pricing & Availability
P7600 Series Probing Systems with TriMode capability are available to order now with deliveries starting in early Q1 2013. Pricing starts at $25,000 US MSRP.

Tektronix Launches New Toolset for Serial Data Link Analysis
Offers Integrated, Flexible, Easy-to-Operate Framework for In-Depth Analysis of High-Speed Serial and DDR Memory Buses
BEAVERTON, Ore., Jan. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Tektronix, Inc., the world's leading manufacturer of oscilloscopes, today announced a new Serial Data Link Analysis Visualizer software package (SDLA Visualizer) for Tektronix performance oscilloscopes including the DPO/DSA/MSO70000 Series. Designers working on next generation high-speed serial standards can use SDLA Visualizer to specify their link, de-embed any components from the measurement path, simulate virtual link components, apply equalization and take measurements at multiple points on the transmission line in a serial data system, module or chipset.
For designers doing physical layer characterization, debug, and compliance of computer, communications, and memory high speed buses, SDLA Visualizer enables them to confidently bridge the gap between modeling behavior and actual signal integrity performance. This in turn significantly reduces design cycle time and speeds up decision making on critical design projects.
"As serial data and memory standards become faster and more complex, designers require new more powerful and flexible tools to accurately characterize the signal under test," said Brian Reich, general manager, Performance Oscilloscopes Tektronix. "With SDLA Visualizer customers not only get sophisticated modeling capabilities to verify compliance to serial standards, they also achieve a seamless transition between characterization, compliance, and debug environments."
Starting with USB 3.0, the latest serial technologies require sophisticated link analysis software that considers all components of the network, measurement equipment, and silicon specific IP models. Similarly, embedded designers who need to implement faster links in systems face challenges with probing signals at the desired test point and must remove reflections and other effects in order to see the true signal.
To meet these needs, SDLA Visualizer provides complete 4-port modeling and takes into account transmitter output impedance, scope and receiver input impedance, and channel and fixture impedance to provide the truest representation of the signal possible. This is accomplished by accounting for reflections, insertion loss and cross coupling terms of each element in the link. It also enables the user to validate and debug S-parameters on individual link elements on demand, saving the user time and providing element by element or visibility at any test point in the link.
Another key challenge is validating the link model. SDLA makes this task easier with a complete set of plots including frequency response, phase response, and plots of all 16 S-parameters. Adding to its usability, SDLA provides a single common user interface to define all link components while giving the user the flexibility to define multiple test points instead of having to create a different link model for each test point. SDLA Visualizer coupled with DPOJET Jitter and Eye Analysis software allows the user to validate the eye and jitter results at multiple test points simultaneously, providing confidence that the model is configured correctly.
IBIS AMI Model Integration
To make it easier to work with silicon-specific IP models, the SDLA Visualizer goes beyond supporting reference receiver equalization techniques and can incorporate vendor-specific receiver equalization and clock recovery algorithms to help configure and define the link model. These are often based on the IBIS Algorithmic Modeling Interface (IBIS-AMI) modeling standard for serial physical layer (PHY) links.
"Systems designers are using IBIS-AMI models to design and validate high speed links prior to PCB fab-out, with model accuracy being a major concern." said Barry Katz, CEO, SiSoft, a leading provider of EDA simulation software for system-level high-speed design. "Customers need a straightforward method to correlate models to measurements and perform real-time what-if analysis on lab hardware. With its new SDLA framework, Tektronix sets the foundation for signal integrity lab capabilities where this level of integration will be common practice."
Availability
The new SDLA Visualizer software will be available for customer download by the end of Q1 2013 worldwide. Contact your Tektronix account manager for details.

New Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi Innovations Take the Complexity Out of Optimizing Wi-Fi Networks Overwhelmed with Mobile Devices
Unveils SmartWay(TM) and BeamFlex+(TM) Technologies that Improve the Performance and Administration of Mobile Devices and Mobile Device Traffic over Wi-Fi Networks
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Ruckus Wireless, Inc. (NYSE: RKUS) today introduced two new Smart Wi-Fi technologies, SmartWay(TM) and BeamFlex+(TM), which simplify the administration and improve the performance of mobile devices and traffic over Smart Wi-Fi networks.
The proliferation of mobile devices within organizations of all types is creating new performance and management challenges for IT administrators. Not only are users now armed with multiple Wi-Fi-enabled devices that are much more mobile in nature compared to traditional laptops, but network infrastructure services and devices, such as printers, projectors, digital media receivers and file servers, are becoming mobile with the integration of Wi-Fi.
"Network services devices that have historically been accessible through wired Ethernet connections are now integrating Wi-Fi to provide greater deployment flexibility," said Steve Martin, VP of Engineering for Ruckus Wireless. "For these devices to be accessible by users on Wi-Fi networks, they must advertise themselves. These advertisements, often performed by multicast protocols such as Bonjour or UPnP, create unique challenges that administrators must struggle to solve."
Real Problems that Need Smarter Answers
New mobile devices such as Apple iPhones, iPads and AppleTV operating on Wi-Fi networks can generate large volumes of traffic as these multicast protocols constantly advertise the availability of the devices. This broadcast traffic is transmitted at lower speeds and spills across the entire wireless local area network (WLAN), slowing down the performance and capacity of WLANs.
Beyond controlling new mobile traffic on Wi-Fi networks, the use of mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones present new performance and connectivity problems as the orientation of these devices constantly change.
With the typical use of mobile devices, users don't always hold them perfectly vertical or horizontal. Consequently, Wi-Fi signals are transmitted and received improperly. This causes a signal imbalance between the communication of Wi-Fi access points (APs) and client devices, resulting in the degradation of Wi-Fi performance. The new Ruckus SmartWay and BeamFlex+ technologies were specifically developed to solve these problems.
Introducing SmartWay: Beyond Bonjour Bridging
Ruckus SmartWay is a new Smart Wi-Fi software technology that not only simplifies the administration and optimization of service discovery traffic, such as Apple Bonjour and UPnP protocols over Smart Wi-Fi networks, it also supports advanced facilities to restrict or "fence" these services to a given access point, group of access points or a particular geographic area.
Ideally suited for K-12 and higher education environments, SmartWay helps organizations enable users with Apple devices to exploit other resources on their networks. For example, SmartWay makes Apple Bonjour services such as AirPrint, AirPlay, and the Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) used in wireless printers and multimedia devices usable and controllable across subnets.
Current competitive approaches simply bridge all multicast traffic (e.g. Bonjour) between two virtual LANs (VLANs) or bridge the traffic from a single VLAN to all VLANs on a service-by-service basis. This means that a given service, such as Apple TV, becomes available everywhere - creating security concerns as resources are visible in undesired locations.
Without SmartWay a teacher, for instance, can use AirPlay to transmit from an iPad to the Apple TV in the classroom only if both devices are on the same subnet. But now, with SmartWay support for Bonjour, the teacher can access any AppleTV as well as have any student transmit from their iPad (on the student Wi-Fi network) to the Apple TV (on a different Wi-Fi network).
Wi-Fi deployments supporting multicast traffic such as Bonjour or UPnP can quickly get out of control if not scaled properly. Rather than flooding the network with traffic from all devices and subnets, Ruckus SmartWay selectively bridges this traffic to the subnets of choice.
Ruckus is natively integrating SmartWay support for bridging Bonjour and other multicast traffic directly into its ZoneFlex software system. This allows service discovery traffic to be selectively bridged across subnets to enable large-scale deployments without overloading the network.
Introducing BeamFlex+: Adapting Wi-Fi Signals to Changing Device Orientation
Another Smart Wi-Fi innovation, Ruckus BeamFlex+ adds essential technology to Ruckus-patented BeamFlex adaptive antenna arrays. BeamFlex+ is "polarization-agnostic" and automatically adjusts to deliver the best performance, regardless of the way in which client devices are sending Wi-Fi signals.
As mobile devices change their orientation, BeamFlex+ enables Ruckus access points to ensure the highest possible throughput. Simply altering the orientation of a mobile device or the angle of a laptop can cause dramatic changes in Wi-Fi performance and reliable connectivity. Traditional access points typically don't have the ability to optimize or adapt to these types of changes within new, mobile device-rich Wi-Fi environments.
BeamFlex+ also enables better reception of communications from low-powered mobile devices that don't have strong Wi-Fi transmission capabilities. BeamFlex+ uniquely leverages maximal ratio combining (MRC) technology in combination with polarization diversity to improve the reception of signals from different orientations for more reliable communication. This enables BeamFlex+ enabled Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi access points to "listen" to Wi-Fi transmissions that are sent in different ways from client devices, ensuring more consistent Wi-Fi connections. With BeamFlex+, customers can effectively optimize the signal strength to realize significant improvements in performance and reliable connectivity.
Recent advances in Wi-Fi standards, such as 802.11n, now allow several parallel data streams to be transmitted from multiple antennas, thereby increasing Wi-Fi network throughput. At the receiver, these streams are effectively combined to gain higher data rates. Unlike conventional access points, Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi APs with BeamFlex+ have complete control over how Wi-Fi signals are transmitted and in what orientation. This improves the chances to increase throughput in virtually any environment.
BeamFlex+ has the unique ability to control the shape of Wi-Fi signals to increase the probability that multiple data streams can be effectively combined within a given environment, improving Wi-Fi performance.
Pricing and Availability
Available immediately, Ruckus BeamFlex+ is supported at no cost in select Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi access points that integrate Ruckus-patented dual-polarized adaptive antenna systems.
Generally available in Q2, Ruckus SmartWay is a new, free software capability supported within the Ruckus ZoneFlex software operating system. SmartWay can currently be tested using existing Ruckus ZoneFlex systems by requesting a simple beta software upgrade.

Listener Engagement Generates Thousands Of Downloads, Likes And Over 1.7 Million Song Votes For Cox Media Group's Tampa 97X
Alternative Rock Station Turns Programming "Control" Over To Audience with LDR's Crowdcasting Technology Platform
TAMPA, Fla. and CLEVELAND, Jan. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Listener reaction to Tampa radio station WSUN-FM 97X's recent switch to interactive crowdcasting technology has been overwhelming, generating thousands of downloads, Facebook likes and over 1.7 million song votes.
Before the switch, 97X was just one of 20 radio stations in the number 18 ranked Tampa-St. Petersburg radio market until Friday, Jan. 18. That's when the Cox Media Group alternative rock station turned over control of its music programming to its listeners - 24 hours a day, seven days a week - becoming the first rock station in the U.S. to let its listeners take total charge and fully decide every song that plays on the air in real time.
The technology supporting the new station format is provided by LDR (http://www.LDRinteractive.com), a Cleveland-based interactive broadcast technology company that pioneered crowdcasting technology in 2009. Since the company's launch, it has deployed its patent-pending, interactive programming systems on over 160 radio stations around the world. The 'LDR.Takeover' platform used by 97X allows listeners to vote on each song that plays on 97X throughout the day by voting on the station's website (http://www.97xonline.com) and through a new Apple and Android mobile app that LDR custom-developed for the station.
Initial data is showing a seismic amount of listener interaction and engagement in the first seven days since the changeover:
-- Mobile app downloads - 17,300
-- Mobile user sessions - 178,700
-- Unique voters online - Over 300,000
-- Number of Facebook votes ('likes' & 'dislikes') - 1.7 Million (4 votes
per second in prime time)
-- Third most Facebook 'likes' in Tampa radio
-- Average number of 'Open Mic' song introduction requests - 1 every 3
minutes
"We've created the first 'social music experience' in the country and have given the keys to our airwaves over to our listeners," said Keith Lawless, Cox Media Group vice president and market manager. "Together with our technology partner, LDR, we are presenting a listener opportunity to interact with a radio station in a way never seen before in radio."
The new format allows listeners to choose music from an expanded playlist of more than 1,800 songs covering 30 years of rock music including deeper cuts from albums and artists not typically heard on 97X before. The station is leveraging social media and its mobile app to keep listeners connected to the station. The app also has an innovative 'Open Mic' feature allowing listeners to record and upload a song introduction. Listeners are notified by SMS, email and twitter alerts when their favorite songs are about to play, and share votes on social platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. 97X listeners can also earn social media 'badges' by interacting with the station.
What was the first song picked by listeners to play on the new 97X? It was "Best of You" by Foo Fighters. Since then, some of the most voted and played bands have been Muse, Fun, The Lumineers, Mumford and Sons and Imagine Dragons.
Listeners are passionate about the changes as demonstrated from numerous Facebook and Twitter posts:
"Commercial music radio NEEDS a major shake-up, and #new97x is doing something revolutionary in a top 20 market." - Dan Guarro, @DannyAJ4DG (Twitter)
"I was really, really bummed when I heard The Morning X is no longer, but I'm actually loving the new format!" - Alexis Chamberlain @aqchamberlain (Twitter)
"I love the changes. Brings radio into the 21(st) century. Best thing to happen to these old waves in a long time." - Joshua Moon (Facebook)
"The engagement levels and average time spent on 97Xonline.com as well as the 97X LDR mobile app are extremely encouraging," said Daniel Anstandig, president and CEO of LDR. "Since LDR launched, we've been fine-tuning our approach to developing crowdcasting technology that uniquely merges social media, mobile and web technologies and broadcast programming to drive broadcast ratings, revenue and web traffic."
In addition to the music voting features, the LDR platform also offers other interactive elements. It allows listeners to record their voice and send it directly to the station for broadcast, sign-up for instant SMS, email and twitter alerts when their voice or their favorite songs are about to play, and share votes on social platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. Also, when they earn "badges," they can share their accomplishment on Facebook and Twitter.

"Russia is undergoing a massive television restructuring, and we expect pay TV to continue its high growth and exceed 90 percent household penetration by 2018. Russia's digital cable subscribers have been growing rapidly, reaching nearly 45 percent of total subscribers. Satellite subscriptions have been growing at 18.5 percent annually since 2008, with increasing interest in HD services," said Sam Rosen, Practice Director at ABI Research. "Today's Russian television consumption is evolving from analog to digital, with an upcoming transition from standard definition (SD) to high definition (HD), driven in part by the government's investment in digital TV broadcasting. Russian audiences increasingly value the convenience and comfort of more sophisticated broadcast services, and are ready to pay for these new technologies."
Russia has adopted the DVB-T2 standard for terrestrial broadcast and set 2015 as the national analog shut-off deadline.* In the surrounding area, Ukraine and Kazakhstan have also adopted this standard. At CSTB, Broadcom is launching the industry's first fully integrated single chip DVB-T2 receiver system-on-a-chip (SoC) solution (BCM7563), providing a cost-effective transition from analog directly to digital TV programming and an easy migration towards future IP-delivered interactive content and services.

"The new EMS App was developed in partnership with our commercial customers who range from HVAC contractors and distributors, to facility managers and business owners," said Stuart Lombard, ecobee's President and CEO. He continued, "During the development process, our customers' told us that their biggest challenges included high demands on their time, responding to a large percentage of unwarranted service calls, and dealing with repeat occurrences at one or more facilities. These challenges resulted in wasted productivity and unnecessary costs."
The EMS App was developed to address these challenges and to provide ecobee customers with a simple and easy way to monitor and control all of their EMS and EMS Si Wi-Fi thermostats while on the go. "The EMS App allows users to be more responsive to their tenants, employees and customers, identify and address problems quickly, decrease the number of unnecessary and expensive on-site service calls, and increase their overall efficiency," said Lombard. "Our customers played an integral role in helping us design this commercial App that addresses their business needs, and delivers an outstanding user experience."
With the ecobee EMS App, customers can create a custom "Watch List" of thermostats to quickly keep tabs on priority spaces, and locations with repeat issues. The "Alerts" list summarizes all current issues and maintenance actions, allowing customers to address problems immediately. Additionally, the App provides customers with visibility into each of their ecobee thermostats, and enables them to make simple adjustments to ensure their facilities are comfortable when occupied, and saving energy and money when they're not.
