GSMA Initiative Reinforces European Mobile Operators' Commitment To Consumer Privacy
- Launched on European Privacy Day, New Accountability Measures Aim to Enhance User Confidence in Mobile Apps
BRUSSELS, Jan. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- To mark European Privacy Day(1), the GSMA is announcing new mobile industry commitments to reinforce privacy protection for mobile app users. Building on the success of the GSMA's Privacy Design Guidelines(2) published last year, a number of European mobile operators are participating in a new initiative that ensures the effective and consistent implementation of these Guidelines and holds operators directly accountable for securing the privacy of all customers who use their own-branded mobile apps.
By signing up to an Accountability Framework, a new tool published today and with the potential for application across the mobile ecosystem, GSMA members can now formally commit to ensuring their business practices are compliant with the Guidelines. The core elements of the Framework include:
-- Organisational commitment: confirming senior management buy-in and
appropriate delegation to ensure the Guidelines are implemented
consistently across an organisation's operations;
-- Internal programme controls: including staff guidance on practical
application of the Guidelines and systems for customers to report
privacy-related complaints and incidents; and
-- Enforcement for noncompliant organisations: ongoing noncompliance or
serious breaches will lead to appropriate sanctions.

Since the publication of the Guidelines, a number of European mobile operators have begun to implement them for their own-branded mobile apps, including Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, Orange, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Telekom Austria, Telenor, TeliaSonera and Vodafone. The Guidelines are already influencing thinking and policy in different regions around the world(3).

This is the 12(th) consecutive year the company has invested more than $100 million in the region. The company's network investment in Upstate New York now totals more than $1.6 billion since 2000. The rapid rollout of 4G LTE will continue in 2013 with 4G LTE technology scheduled to cover the company's entire nationwide footprint by the middle of the year.

MMA and IAB Release 'Mobile Phone Creative Guidelines' For Public Comment
Guidelines to Empower Creative Groups by Reducing Industry Fragmentation
NEW YORK, Jan. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Withthe rapid evolution of the mobile marketplace, there is a demand for standards and guidelines to unify the advertising industry. To expand on current industry accepted ad units, the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) and the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) today released "Mobile Phone Creative Guidelines" for public comment, simplifying the development of ad units across the industry.
To maintain consistency, the "Mobile Phone Creative Guidelines" supplement the MMA's widely adopted Universal Mobile Ad Package (UMAP v 2.0), to make buying and selling mobile ads easier and more effective. The guidelines provide additional directives necessary to empower creative shops and publishers to use mobile for more dynamic, rich consumer experiences. Additionally, it also aligns across the IAB's "Display Advertising Guidelines."
The "Mobile Phone Creative Guidelines" incorporates input from marketing and media authorities to establish detailed specifications for mobile phone ad units. The guidelines address smartphone and feature phone devices and are relevant for both mobile web and in-app inventory. Additionally, they include ad specifications for both basic and rich media units.
Balancing the requirements of both the marketer and the consumer experience, the guidelines address varying factors such as different data connections (WIFI, 3G, 4G, etc.), carrier plans, Z-Index range and even the impact of the reduced processing power inherent in mobile device for file load size and web display.
Critical elements in the "Mobile Phone Creative Guidelines" include:
