AT&T Invests Nearly $25 Million In Utah Network In First Half Of 2012
Company Builds New Cell Sites, Boosts Capacity To Deliver Superior 4G Experience in Utah
SALT LAKE CITY, Aug. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T* is driving investment and innovation across Utah to deliver superior 4G service and the best possible mobile Internet experience.
In the first half of 2012, AT&T invested nearly $25 million in its Utah wireless and wired networks.
Network upgrades include activation of new cell sites or towers to improve network coverage, deploying faster connections to enable 4G speeds, and adding spectrum capacity to support additional traffic.
AT&T network upgrades in Utah also include deployment of new Wi-Fi hot spots and backbone network connections.
"We're working to build a 4G network that's smarter and better to provide our customers with a superior mobile Internet experience," said Jason Olson, Director of External Affairs, AT&T-Utah. "The ongoing investment we're making across Utah is designed to increase 4G coverage, reliability and speed. We also continue to invest in technologies like Wi-Fi and DAS to help provide customers with the best connections when they want it, whatever they're doing."
AT&T's innovation and investment has resulted in the nation's largest 4G network, covering 275 million people with ultra-fast speeds and a more consistent user experience. AT&T is the only U.S. service provider to deploy two compatible 4G technologies to deliver more speed to more customers.
AT&T's focus to deliver the best possible mobile Internet experience goes beyond 4G to embrace additional connection technologies. AT&T operates the nation's largest Wi-Fi network** including more than 30,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots at popular restaurants, hotels, bookstores and retailers across the country. Most AT&T smartphone customers get access to our entire national Wi-Fi network at no additional cost, and Wi-Fi usage doesn't count against customers' monthly wireless data plans.
AT&T also is a leading developer of Distributed Antenna System (DAS) networks, which utilize multiple small antennas to maximize coverage and speed within stadiums, convention centers, office buildings, hotels and other areas where traditional coverage methods are challenging.
Over the past five years, AT&T invested more than $115 billion into operations and into acquiring spectrum and other assets that have enhanced our wireless and wired networks. Since 2007, AT&T has invested more capital into the U.S. economy than any other public company. In a July 2012 report, the Progressive Policy Institute ranked AT&T No. 1 on its list of U.S. "Investment Heroes."

Rand McNally's mission is to provide students with a love for geography and discovery, and also to provide them with a platform to express ideas about the issues they believe will shape their own futures.
From the submitted essays, ten finalists (five from 7-9(th) grade submissions and five from the 10-12(th) grade submissions) will receive a three-day, two-night WorldStrides DiscoverNOW! trip for two to Washington, D.C. GainSpan's Newest Reference Design Codes Provide Easy Wi-Fi Connectivity to Atmel and STMicroelectronics MCUs
Reduce development time; give access to advanced networking features
SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --GainSpan(®) Corporation, a leader in low power embedded Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi connectivity for the Internet of Things, today announced the availability of Wi-Fi Reference Design Code for two additional families of microcontrollers (MCUs)-- Atmel® AVR® and STMicroelectronics' STM32 MCUs. The new drivers make it easy to add Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing designers to reduce development time and bring quickly to market embedded systems based on these Atmel and STMicroelectronics' MCUs.
The release of the new code adds to GainSpan's portfolio of driver software in support of popular MCUs, from Freescale, Renesas, Texas Instruments, Microchip and now STMicroelectronics and Atmel.
With the new drivers, customers can easily use Atmel AVR and STM32-based products to communicate with any GainSpan Wi-Fi module through a serial interface. The modules offer advanced networking features and capabilities not readily available with other Wi-Fi modules including enterprise security, embedded DHCP, DNS and HTTP (S) servers, XML parser, discovery and more.
The code is easily portable to other host microcontrollers. The Application code includes TCP, UDP and HTTP traffic to support multiple concurrent sockets, and AP functionality. With its small memory footprint, the new reference code can run on the most memory constrained MCUs. Even when including the drivers, UDP, TCP and multiple sockets, it uses less than 8 Kbytes of flash and 2 Kbytes of RAM, and can be used with the IAR Embedded Workbench Kickstart Edition.
"With the explosion of the Internet of Things, a wide variety of low-power MCUs are now being used as the engines for embedded devices," said Bernard Aboussouan, vice president of marketing, GainSpan. Los Angeles Dodges Worst Labor Day Traffic Nationwide
I-5 Beats the 405 as the most congested corridor for West Coast holiday travel
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Every Labor Day, millions of Americans hit the road for one "last" summer weekend, and 2012 will be no different according to INRIX, the leading provider of traffic information. INRIX predicts that Los Angeles, the second-most congested city in the U.S.,(1) will also claim the second spot for the worst cities for Labor Day Weekend road-trippers.
"Our analysis of traffic trends in Los Angeles combined with larger trends showing consumer spending on the rebound provides the perfect formula for Labor Day Getaway gridlock," said Jim Bak, INRIX Director of Community Relations. "INRIX's advice to travelers is to depart before noon on Friday or wait until after 9 p.m. to avoid spending your first day of the holiday idle in traffic. If you can wait to leave until Saturday morning, Angelinos will find smooth sailing until traffic starts to slow down again between 1 and 2 p.m."
Key insights from INRIX's Los Angeles area research include:
-- Travelers leaving Los Angeles will have the best luck traveling before
noon on Friday or waiting until after 9 p.m. that night. Those leaving
on Saturday should leave between 9 - 10 a.m.
-- I-5 will be one of the most congested corridors for holiday travel on
the west coast, with travels times as much as 3x longer than normal in
some areas
-- Families looking to take a trip to Disneyland should leave early in the
morning, as major routes heading down to Anaheim will be congested
starting at 1 p.m. until the late evening.
With a combination of weekend travelers and commuters clogging L.A.'s roads on Friday afternoon, drivers can expect a typical trip to take twice as long as it would on a normal traffic choked afternoon. Given the expected increase in the number of holiday travelers, combined with ongoing road construction and unexpected delays due to accidents and other incidents, Bak advises travelers to use free tools like the INRIX Traffic app, to ease drivers' getaways trips with up-to-the-minute information about traffic conditions, the fastest routes and travel times.
Additional information about traffic delays heading to popular road trip destinations for Los Angeles residents is as follows:

Interstate 5 will be one of the most congested corridors for holiday travel on the West Coast. On Friday, the southbound Santa Ana Freeway will become slow from midday and remain solid throughout the prolonged rush hour. Average speeds of 20 mph will cause trips to take 3x longer than a typical gridlocked Friday afternoon. Additionally, traffic will crawl at an avg. speed of 20 mph LAX to downtown. Trend Micro Launches Trend Ready for Cloud Service Providers Program
The world's leading public cloud service providers team with Trend Micro to help secure customers' journey to the cloud with "Trend Ready" solutions.
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- VMworld -- Trend Micro Inc. (TYO: 4704;TSE: 4704), the global leader in cloud security, today introduced the Trend Ready for Cloud Service Providers program, a new global initiative designed to make it possible for enterprises to confidently and securely move into the public cloud. Leading public cloud service providers that have worked closely with Trend Micro in achieving the Trend Ready status include: Amazon Web Services; Dell; HP Cloud Services; NTT Communications, U.S. and Singapore divisions; OpSource, Dimension Data company; Savvis, a CenturyLink Company; and Telefonica | Vivo.
The new program will allow both Trend Micro and select Trend Ready partners to verify the compatibility of Trend Micro products within leading cloud service providers' infrastructures. By participating in the program, cloud service providers are confirming to their customers that their cloud infrastructures will support and work with Trend Micro products.
According to IDC's 2011 Cloud Security Survey: Among organizations not considering cloud computing, more than one third (37 percent) agreed that that multi-tenant cloud architectures were too risky, from a security and privacy standpoint, to host their critical applications and data. What this means is that enterprises still need to understand and overcome the main adoption barrier of public cloud - security, which continues to deter enterprises from wide-spread deployments of business-critical applications in reliable cloud service programs.
The Trend Ready for Cloud Service Providers program educates, guides and delivers a proven compatible solution suite which helps customers understand cloud, overcome adoption inhibitors and safely adopt public cloud computing via verified Trend Ready partners and through the purchase and use of Trend Micro products and services. Currently, the program verifies the compatibility of Trend Micro(TM) Deep Security and Trend Micro(TM) SecureCloud(TM), two world-leading virtualization and cloud security solutions.
In addition to verification of product compatibility with identified Trend Micro products, participants in the Trend Ready program will also be provided with Implementation Guides to share with their customers describing the best practices and recommended configurations for deployment of specified Trend Micro products in their cloud infrastructures.
Current products verified in the Trend Ready for Cloud Service Providers program include:
-- Trend Micro(TM) Deep Security(TM), the industry's first agentless
security platform, delivers comprehensive, adaptive, highly efficient
agent-based protection, including anti-malware, web reputation,
intrusion prevention, firewall, integrity monitoring, and log
inspection. Deep Security 9, the newest version also announced today
(see press release here), offers additional performance and ease-of-use
enhancements to the agentless architecture.
-- Trend Micro(TM) SecureCloud(TM), a hosted service or on-premise software
application that provides data protection for public and private clouds
using an efficient and easy-to-use encryption service that keeps data
private and helps meet regulatory compliance requirements.
More information on the Trend Ready program can be found here.

- NI miniSystems are small-scale replications of customer-inspired, real-world systems that connect with NI educational hardware and LabVIEW system design software.
- First-year university students can work on the challenges that originally attracted them to the engineering field, and educators can engage and retain the next generation of innovators.
- All NI miniSystems are compatible with the NI myDAQ hardware device and priced so educators can teach using an affordable, scalable platform.
AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- National Instruments (NASDAQ: NATI) today introduced NI miniSystems. These miniaturized versions of real-world systems, such as roll-chassis dynamometers and electrical smart grids, are developed in collaboration with leading educational suppliers to bring instant relevance to math and science theory as students begin to pursue engineering degrees.
Lab platforms have historically been too inaccessible for widespread use in a typical classroom and are often disconnected from the professional tools that are actually used in research and industry. Using the integrated hardware and software approach of graphical system design, NI miniSystems eliminate the cost, time and space barriers that limit educators' abilities to overcome theory-only education by engaging students through hands-on experimentation. NI miniSystems give first-year university or college students a tangible connection between their studies and their future jobs.

ComEd Introduces "Report an Outage" App for Facebook
CHICAGO, Aug. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- ComEd customers have a new tool to report power outages - Facebook. The new Facebook application, available on ComEd's Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/ComEd), allows users to report power outages and check their outage status. By visiting the site, clicking the "Report an Outage" icon and entering the same log-in information they use on ComEd.com, customers will let ComEd know that their power is out and where the outage is located. They can return to the app to check the status of the outage as well. ComEd is the first public utility in the country to offer this capability through Facebook.
"Enabling customers to report an outage using ComEd's Facebook page is another important tool our customers can use to let us know the power is out in their area," said Val Jensen, Senior Vice-President of Customer Operations for ComEd. "The quicker we know about an outage, the quicker we can respond and restore power."
This app is the most recent in a series of tools designed to increase options for customers to communicate directly with ComEd and receive information. In the last year, ComEd has also introduced a two-way texting program, a mobile application for Apple® and Android(TM) smart phones, an outage map on its website and more. The tools let customers report an outage, receive updates on restoration of power to their area, pay their bills and manage their accounts.
"After the significant storms we faced in 2011, we recognized the need to provide our customers with a greater variety of ways to communicate with us when and where it is most convenient for them," said Jensen. "Using these digital tools gives customers a greater ability to make decisions in the wake of an outage or in the management of their account."
Commonwealth Edison Company (ComEd) is a unit of Chicago-based Exelon Corporation (NYSE: EXC), the nation's leading competitive energy provider, with approximately 6.6 million customers. Europe's Number One Car Marketplace is First to Use the Cloud from T-Systems and VMware
-- AutoScout24 uses the new "vCloud" offering
-- Czech agency Actum/G2 also opts for flexible IT
-- High performance, cost transparency and rapid expansion of IT capacities
TROY, Mich., Aug. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- AutoScouts24 is the first customer to benefit from the strategic partnership between VMware and T-Systems. Europe's number one car marketplace is using the new offering from the Cloud Alliance, and thus is able to upgrade its own data center simply and rapidly with flexible capacities from the cloud.
T-Systems and VMware had announced in June that together they would provide their customers with flexible data center services as required, virtually at the touch of a button. The certified offerings from the cloud (VMware vCloud Datacenter Services) allow companies to now expand their internal IT resources with the cloud capacities of T-Systems. As the leading supplier of virtualization and cloud solutions in the world, VMware is contributing the necessary software - principally VMware vSphere and vCloud Director - and the control and security packages based on that software. As a cloud pioneer, the Telekom subsidiary is bringing its expertise in operating data centers and IT services and in providing dynamic ICT services into the partnership.
"We require flexible resources, because our markets change every day," declared Joachim Rath, head of IT Production at AutoScout24. "The joint offering from VMware and T-Systems enables us to move spare capacity between the private cloud and the hybrid cloud as required." AutoScout24 has already had positive experience with the use of combined internal and external IT resources, the so-called hybrid cloud. The company uses the hybrid cloud for its workshop portal (http://www.werkstatt.autoscout24.de) whenever it is dealing with CPU-intensive additional import processes. However, the vCloud offering from T-Systems does not only help to cope with peak demand periods. If a company's internal IT drops out, vCloud could be used to continue the entire operation from the cloud.
Among the other companies who are already using the vCloud offering is Actum/G2, one of the leading digital marketing agencies in the Czech Republic. Via its New York headquarters, Actum/G2 is part of the WPP Group, which has 102,000 employees and is one of the world's largest media and communication enterprises. The Prague agency develops and operates websites, apps and web applications from the cloud for its customers. T-Systems provides Actum/G2 with the cloud infrastructure as a self-service model with high availability, security and rapid response times.
Many companies have already virtualized more than 50 percent of their own servers, thereby gaining distinct advantages in terms of efficiency and IT management. Through the use, tried and tested for years, of VMware cloud technologies, T-Systems offers cloud services to the same industrial standard as companies all over the world are already using themselves. This means that the latter benefit not only from the agility and flexibility of cloud services, but also from the portability, compatibility, security and control which are indispensable for large corporations.

Verizon Wireless Enhances 4G LTE Network Coverage in Cattaraugus County
- Company expands local 4G LTE network for residents, businesses and visitors
- Part of ongoing nationwide deployment of high-speed data network
- 4G LTE now available to more than 75% of U.S. population in more than 370 markets
OLEAN, N.Y., Aug. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless recently activated new 4G LTE coverage in Olean, further expanding coverage on the high-speed wireless data network the company launched locally in April.
4G LTE lets Verizon Wireless customers use their 4G LTE-enabled devices to surf the Web, post status updates and photos, share music, and download files at speeds up to 10 times faster than customers on 3G networks.
In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, Verizon Wireless customers will be able to use their 4G LTE smartphones, tablets, notebooks, laptop modems and mobile hotspots to experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.
"We've always believed the best wireless devices deserve the best wireless network," said Gene Fassett, executive director of Network for Verizon Wireless in Upstate New York. "People everywhere are increasingly relying on their tablets, smartphones and apps to stay organized, connected and entertained. Our investment here in Upstate New York and across the country has kept us ahead of this consumer trend and underscores our belief that 4G LTE delivers the best value to customers by maximizing the performance of their wireless devices."
Verizon Wireless customers can also take advantage of HomeFusion(TM) Broadband, a solution that leverages the power and speed of the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network to deliver high-speed, in-home Internet access for residential broadband, particularly in areas where Internet options are limited or are not currently available.
Verizon Wireless has invested more than $1.4 billion on its Upstate New York network since 2000, including more than $158 million in 2011, to increase coverage and capacity on behalf of its customers.
The company's 4G LTE network is currently available to more than 75 percent of the U.S. population in more than 370 markets nationwide.
When customers travel outside of a 4G LTE coverage area, 4G LTE devices automatically connect to Verizon Wireless' 3G network, where available, enabling customers to stay connected from coast to coast. Verizon Wireless' 3G network is the most reliable high-speed data network in the country and allows customers in 3G coverage areas who purchase 4G LTE devices today to take advantage of 4G LTE speeds when the faster network becomes available in their area, or when they travel to areas already covered by 4G LTE.
Verizon Wireless operates the nation's largest 4G LTE network and largest, most reliable 3G network. The company serves 94.2 million retail customers, including 88.8 million retail postpaid customers. Headquartered in Basking Ridge, N.J., with 78,000 employees nationwide, Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications (NYSE, NASDAQ: VZ) and Vodafone (LSE, NASDAQ: VOD). Verizon Wireless Enhances 4G LTE Network Coverage in Wyoming County
- Company expands local 4G LTE network for residents, businesses and visitors
- Part of ongoing nationwide deployment of high-speed data network
- 4G LTE now available to more than 75% of U.S. population in more than 370 markets
BUFFALO, N.Y., Aug. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless recently activated new 4G LTE coverage in Perry, further expanding coverage on the high-speed wireless data network the company launched locally in October 2011.
Maxim's 40G Chipset Reduces Power Consumption and Boosts Data-Center Throughput
Maxim Integrated Products' 4-channel QSFP+ transmitter supplies 4x the bandwidth, at less power, and in only 1.5x the area of a single-channel solution.
SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Maxim Integrated Products, Inc. (NASDAQ: MXIM) announces a 40G transmitter chipset that provides data centers with 4x the data throughput, at very low power, and in little more space than conventional single-channel alternatives. The new 4-channel 40GBASE-LR4 QSFP+ chipset comprises the MAX3948 DC-coupled laser driver and the DS4830 optical microcontroller.
Data centers and data communication networks need to significantly increase data density while staying within their already constrained power budgets. Maxim's QSFP+ transmitter solution addresses both challenges. The QSFP+ modules supply 4x the data throughput in only 1.5x the area of a single-channel SFP+ solution. Equally important, Maxim's chipset enables 4 x 10Gbps QSFP+ modules to consume less power per channel than single SFP+ modules. Service providers and network operators can now enjoy the benefits of a low-power solution that extends system life, reduces operational expense, and conserves valuable energy resources.
MAX3948 Key Advantages:
-- Consumes less than 2W for 4 transmit channels, enabling less than 3.5W
QSFP+ module power consumption.
-- DC-coupled laser interface (patent-pending, application number
13/352,011) reduces power consumption and external component count.
DS4830 Key Advantages:
-- On-chip 13-bit ADC with dedicated round-robin offloads 16-bit
microcontroller core and lowers clock speed; saves 75mW to 100mW
compared to competitive solutions.
-- Single-cycle multiply accumulator (MAC) allows DS4830 to speed through
filter calculations and easily maintain four average power control (APC)
loops.
Commentary:
-- "Power consumption has emerged as the single most critical constraint in
today's data center," said Karen Liu, Principal Analyst at Ovum. "It
limits density and performance which, in turn, determine cost. Maxim's
chip innovation tackles this key problem."
-- "The MAX3948 and DS4830 demonstrate Maxim's innovative approach to
integration. This chipset resolves power-density limitations in
data-center interconnects by utilizing DC coupling to the laser," said
Dr. Andrew Sharratt, Senior Business Manager at Maxim Integrated
Products. "This transmitter solution meets all QSFP+ requirements and
provides minimum power dissipation."
Availability and Pricing:
MAX3948
-- Available in a 3mm x 3mm, 16-pin TQFN package.
-- Specified for the -40°C to +95°C temperature range.
-- Pricing starts at $5 (1000-up, FOB USA).
DS4830

Full Story:
EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) today at VMworld(® )2012 set a new benchmark for enterprise Flash efficiency by delivering in-line cache deduplication on EMC(®) VFCache(TM), a server Flash caching solution that turbo-charges performance in mission-critical Oracle, Microsoft and SAP application environments--up to 3X in some cases. EMC also extended its leadership in VMware environments, with new interoperability between VFCache and VMware(®) vSphere(®) vMotion to enable seamless and flexible movement of virtual machines in environments accelerated by VFCache. EMC continues to invest in the industry's most comprehensive Flash portfolio, delivering all the performance benefits of Flash without sacrificing the benefits of network storage--high availability, disaster recovery, data integrity, and reliability. This unique approach is why EMC shipped a record amount of Flash capacity in the second quarter of 2012.
Technology Highlights:
-- More Efficient: EMC is leveraging its leadership in deduplication for
backup environments and applying that expertise to caching. With the
addition of in-line deduplication of cached data for a larger effective
cache, the cache size of VFCache is significantly increased in
environments with applications leveraging high deduplication gains. This
capability delivers better cost per gigabyte and extends the life
expectancy of the card.
-- Deeper Integration: VFCache is now more deeply integrated at the
virtual, storage and server levels to maximize mission-critical
application environments. VFCache now delivers:
-- Automation of VMware vSphere vMotion environments for efficient
administration. VFCache interoperability with vSphere vMotion makes
it faster and easier to achieve continuous up-time and fluid
operations, complete environment maintenance, and enable seamless
migrations--helping customers accelerate their journey to the cloud.
Through the EMC VSI plug-in for VMware vCenter((TM)), EMC enables
VMware administrators to handle other priority tasks, and ensures
business continuity with no system downtime when migrating
operations.
-- Simplified management, more streamlined operations, and greater
visibility into operational information. EMC VFCache contains the
foundational capabilities to provide EMC VMAX storage administrators
with more operational information, such as VFCache's relationships
to specific LUNS, more performance statistics, and error condition
reporting. These capabilities will support superior storage
management relative to other solutions in the industry, and
represent another key step toward EMC's vision of high performance
automated tiered storage. Customers continue to benefit from
VFCache's turbocharged performance with the protection for which EMC
storage is trusted around the world. EMC is also committed to
integrating VFCache with the rest of EMC's storage
portfolio--including EMC VNX((TM))--in 2013.
-- Support for Cisco's upcoming offering of LSI's customized PCIe Flash
mezzanine cards for UCS B-Series Blade Servers (announced in May
2012).
-- Better Performance: The latest version of VFCache supports multiple PCIe
cards per server and delivers more capacity options--with support for
new 700GB PCIe cards--to cache larger working sets and offer greater
performance to customers. In addition, EMC continues to optimize and
advance the performance of demanding enterprise workloads by lowering
latency through tuning of the VFCache caching algorithms.
In addition to VFCache, customers with mixed workloads can choose from EMC's hybrid arrays armed with EMC FAST(TM) (Fully Automated Storage Tiering) technology that automates the movement of "hot" data onto Flash drives and moves "cold" data to high-capacity drives. For VDI or test and development environments with 100% "hot" data, customers will be able to leverage all-Flash arrays that will deliver the raw performance required with innovative new technologies from "Project X" through EMC's acquisition of XtremIO (announced in May 2012). For persistent data stores with performance intensive workloads--including high-frequency trading or online gaming--EMC will offer "Project Thunder," a server network attached appliance built entirely of high-speed PCIe Flash (announced in February 2012).
Availability
Deduplication and other new VFCache enhancements are available today through EMC and its channel partners.

Full Story:
EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) today announced the EMC(®) Storage Resource Management (SRM) Suite, delivering storage and application administrators application-to-storage management for cloud environments. For instance, now storage administrators can easily view what their Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server counterparts are concerned about -- enabling common insight and alignment of priorities to improve the efficiency and simplify management of the overall IT environment. The EMC SRM Suite optimizes resource investments, enabling customers to move to more agile, cloud-enabled environments.
The EMC SRM Suite is a comprehensive storage management suite comprised of EMC ProSphere(®), EMC Storage Configuration Advisor and EMC Watch4net, the most recent addition to EMC's portfolio, providing greatly improved reporting flexibility. The SRM Suite will provide performance, capacity and configuration management for EMC arrays -- including EMC VMAX(®), EMC VNX(®), EMC VPLEX(®), EMC Isilon(®), and EMC DataDomain(® )-- as well as select third party storage arrays for both file and block.
Virtualization enables businesses of all sizes to simplify management, control costs and guarantee uptime. However, virtualized environments also add layers of complexity to the IT infrastructure that reduce visibility and can complicate the management of storage resources. The SRM Suite attacks these layers -- simply -- by providing visibility into the physical and virtual relationships, which are essential to ensure consistent service levels. As customers build out their cloud infrastructure, the EMC SRM Suite will help organizations ensure service levels while optimizing IT resources -- both key attributes of successful cloud deployments.
Technology Highlights:
Key features of the EMC SRM Suite include:
-- Dynamic real-time reporting: increased visibility of all resources and
performance dependencies from the application to the host, down to the
storage array.
-- Metric correlation: analyze application performance through trending and
threshold notifications and correlate these with storage metrics.
-- Service-level compliance: manage and respond to service-level deviations
through custom thresholds and dashboards across heterogeneous storage.
-- FAST VP (Fully Automated Storage Tiering for Virtual Pools)
optimization: analyze the usage of FAST to meet customer-defined
performance and chargeback policies by application.
-- Storage service alignment: analyze storage workload trends to align
storage tiers to application service levels.
-- Configuration compliance: automatically validate configurations,
leveraging the EMC Support Matrix and customer-defined design best
practices.
Industry Analyst Quote:
Bob Laliberte, Senior Analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group
"The EMC SRM Suite is helping customers continue to transform themselves into cloud-enabled businesses simply and cost-effectively. Companies need to ensure that the appropriate service levels are being delivered to a wide range of applications, even with rapidly growing, changing and complex IT environments. With the SRM Suite, EMC is helping businesses understand the big picture of how storage impacts their applications--a critical ability for any company with highly virtualized/cloud environments."
Customer Quotes:
Johan Marais, Storage & Virtualization Administrator, Discovery Holding, LTD.
"The combination of these three products will allow us to have a full 360 degree view of our storage infrastructure. ProSphere has given us great insight into our current storage environment capacity and performance wise. Adding Storage Configuration Advisor will allow us to have a better hold on storage changes and assist us in applying recommended standards. Completing the solution with Watch4net will give us sight into application health and performance all the way to the storage layer allowing us to adhere to stricter SLA's."
Sarel Theron, Senior SAN Engineer, Cloud Data Management, Internet Solutions
"With the rapid data growth we are experiencing, we must understand our existing as well as future workloads to make sure we are applying the right technology to meet service levels. To do so, we have to understand the relationships, dependencies and impact of systems connecting to storage in real-time. We need one of those 'vital signs' monitors you get in a hospital connected to our SAN. EMC's new SRM Suite appears to be just that."
"By analyzing performance, capacity and configuration compliance in a simple and easy-to-manage suite, EMC is offering customers a better way to maximize their storage investments. As organizations adopt cloud enabling technologies like VMware and FAST VP to create a more agile infrastructure, this new suite provides the visibility and control that ensure application service levels while optimizing storage resources to control costs. It also gives customers the flexibility to manage EMC or third party arrays with file or block storage."
Availability
The EMC SRM Suite is available today worldwide through EMC and EMC channel partners with support for EMC VMAX, EMC VNX and select third party arrays. EMC VPLEX, EMC Isilon and EMC DataDomain will be supported in an upcoming release.
