Philips Reveals hue: World's Smartest LED Light Bulb, Ushering in New Era of Connected Lighting for the Home
Available only at Apple stores, hue is easy to install & control wirelessly from smart devices; demonstrates innovations in digital lighting
SOMERSET, N.J., Oct. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Continuing its tradition of developing innovative lighting products and solutions, Philips today introduced hue, the world's first Web-enabled LED home lighting system available direct to the consumer. Offered exclusively through Apple stores beginning on October 30, the hue starter kit includes three LED bulbs that fit into any standard light fixture, a bridge that connects to existing wireless routers. Philips hue sets up in minutes and, with a quick download of the hue application, the system can be controlled from any iOS or Android device. From the app, consumers can remotely control their home lighting for added security, personalize their lighting experience with custom settings, or program timers to help manage daily schedules, all through the convenience of their smart device.
"Philips hue is a game changer in lighting," said Bruno Biasiotta, CEO and President of Philips Lighting North America. "Just as our experiences with phones, televisions and movies have evolved, thanks to hue, we'll never look at or interact with lighting in the same way again. At Philips, we continue to redefine the art of the possible with LED technology, and hue pushes the boundaries even more, not just in offering great light quality, but in how lighting can be digitized and integrated with our world to further simplify and enhance our lives."
Philips hue can:
-- Eliminate the guesswork in what bulb to buy, offering tunable white
light, from cool to warm based on personal preference
-- Achieve a color rendering index of over 90 in the white range, closely
mimicking the color qualities of an incandescent
-- Provide more than 16 million colors to customize the lighting in each
room
-- Be set as a gentle wake up light or help one go to sleep
-- Relive personal experiences by mimicking the colors in photos by simply
dragging and dropping within the app
-- Turn on/turn off lights when not at home
-- Save light settings and easily recall them from a smart device
-- Manage up to 50 hue bulbs from one device and allow each bulb to be
controlled individually
-- Reduce energy consumption with 8.5 watt bulbs that are 80% more energy
efficient than traditional light bulbs
In home testing done in New York, Berlin and Shanghai, consumers highlighted hue's great light quality and programmable reminders, as well as the fact they could control their lighting from outside the home, as features they most appreciated. Moreover, consumers liked the ability to save personal light settings and recreate them at the touch of a button.
hue includes 4 pre-programmed light settings based on Philips' research around lighting's optimal effects. These pre-programmed scenarios adjust the bulbs to the optimum shade and brightness of white light to relax, read or boost mood and energy.
LEDs have changed the paradigms of flexibility in lighting as they succeed technology like fluorescent, halogen and incandescent, which offered very limited control. With LEDs, lighting can be digitized as the small footprint and semiconductor design allows them to be easily integrated into electronic circuitry. It is this seamless integration into electronic circuits which allows them to deliver unique light outputs on the command of electrical signals. This enables Philips to build smart bulbs into a system where every light bulb has a unique web address and can be integrated with software applications such as the one that comes with hue.
Using the ZigBee LightLink standard, hue bulbs can communicate with each other, allowing them to have a broad signal range, despite the location of the bridge in the home. The standard also allows the system to use significantly less stand-by power than traditional Wi-Fi systems. Further, hue is based on open standards and can be easily integrated with other ZigBee-based systems, such as motion sensors and home thermostats, for additional home automation. Software updates for the bulbs are done automatically via the bridge and the bulbs themselves, making it easy and intuitive for users and essentially future-proofing the customer's investment in hue.
Building on the company's AmbiLight experience, Philips is developing future product features, such as allowing hue to integrate with other media including sound and video. Further, the company is working on features such as geo-location services, allowing hue to sense when a user is close to home and automatically turn on the lights, or turn the off when the user has left. Philips is also researching the application of reverse indicators, enabling hue to alert that the lighting has not been turned on during a specific time period, offering numerous possibilities around senior care.
Philips will make the hue interface and software development kit (SDK) available to anyone who wants to create additional functionality or applications that interact with the system. The applications will then be tested by the Philips connected lighting team to ensure they are viable.
hue starter kits will retail for $199 and are available at Apple stores nationwide on October 30. Additional bulbs will be available at $59. For more information about hue and its capabilities, please visit http://www.meethue.com.

OneAccess Networks Introduces OneOptimization to Improve Cloud Service Delivery for Businesses
Service providers can meet the Quality of Experience expectations of the business user with OneOptimization -application performance monitoring and WAN optimization
HERNDON, Virginia, October 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --
OneAccess Networks [http://www.oneaccess-net.com/onesite/index.php ], a leading
manufacturer of multi-service routers and Ethernet access devices, today launched
OneOptimization an integrated application performance monitoring and optimization solution
that improves the way business users experience cloud services. OneOptimization provides
application level visibility (NetAPM), traffic management (NetControl),
[http://www.oneaccess-net.com/onesite/datasheets/NetAPM&NetControl_270612.pdf ] and high
performance WAN optimization acceleration and compression capabilities (NetBooster) to
enhance business user's Quality of Experience (QoE) for application delivery across
broadband, 3G or Wi-Fi connections.
OneOptimization is another proof point of OneAccess' commitment to lead the evolution
of the multi-service router (MSR) from a Layer 3 centric network element to a cloud-based
application delivery solution. According to OneAccess, the key to this evolution is the
integration of application management and acceleration features that enhance the delivery
and utilization of cloud-based applications. OneOptimization gives service providers the
ability to improve the way business users experience cloud-based services.
"Cloud-based application delivery offers business users productivity gains and
customer service enhancements. Regardless of whether their services are delivered over
broadband or a wireless infrastructure, businesses expect the same delivery experience
from their managed service provider. This is end point transparency," said Dennis R.
Gatens, vice president and general manager of OneAccess Networks, North America.
"Businesses cannot tolerate inconsistency when it comes to application availability and
latency. The result is loss of productivity, or worse, a perception of poor customer
service. For broadband or wireless connectivity, OneOptimization helps to solve the
latency issues related to utilizing cloud based applications."
OneAPM is a management dashboard
[http://www.oneaccess-net.com/onesite/wan-optimization/oneapm.html ] that provides
administrators with the tools to ensure that application performance issues can be
monitored, reported and resolved quickly. This enables service providers to offer a fully
managed service. OneAPM scales from small to large networks and provides global and site
level views of application performance data. This visibility enables QoE to be measured
using a performance index for each application, with reports on application utilization.
"Cloud-based services are great for improving efficiency from an application and
server standpoint but they shift a lot of the challenge onto the network," said Karen Liu,
principal analyst, components, Ovum. "The service has to look like the network's not
there, that there's no distance or bandwidth constraint yet the traffic volume is now so
large the network provider can't just shovel capacity blindly at the problem anymore.
Intelligence - meaning application visibility, WAN optimization and application-based
compression-serves everyone's best interest from the cloud provider to the network
provider to the enterprise."
Ubiquitous WiFi and 3G availability has led many organizations to adopt tablets as a
business productivity tool. This market disruptive appliance paired with a
technology-savvy workforce enables end users to improve productivity while enhancing
customer service. For this reason AirBooster was developed. Part of the OneOptimization
portfolio, AirBooster is a software client for Android tablets
[http://www.oneaccess-net.com/onesite/software/airbooster.html ] that enhances the mobile
business user's QoE while optimizing wireless network resources. With the growing trend of
mobile access, the QoE delivered by the service provider is critically important to the
productivity of many business operations and the retention of customers. AirBooster
enables service providers to deliver end point transparency for the end user.
Integration of application visibility and optimization functionality into the ONE
series multi-service router portfolio enables service providers to offer higher value
services with reduced CAPEX and OPEX, while targeting a larger addressable market with
services that scale to the smallest business. NetAPM and NetControl are available as
software options on all ONE series platforms. NetBooster is available on the One1540. For
more information, contact Dennis Gatens at dennis.gatens@oneaccess-net.com.

Extending Atmel's industry-leading maXTouch touchscreen controller family, Atmel has also integrated maXFusion technology into these devices, becoming the first company to offer a complete human interface solution. Adding this functionality to the touchscreen controller brings all the benefits of using a sensor hub solution but without the need for an additional device, saving PCB footprint and power consumption, while increasing context awareness capabilities by combining touch and motion sensing.
Atmel has partnered with leading sensor manufacturers to provide designers the flexibility to select from the widest range of sensors from the industry's leading sensor manufacturers, including AKM, Aichi Steel, Bosch, InvenSense, Intersil and Kionix. These relationships enable Atmel to support prequalified sensor solutions, reducing the time-to-market for our customers.
"With the market for sensor hub solutions in smartphone, tablets and portable PCs and beyond projected to be almost $4 billion by 2015, there is a huge opportunity for silicon providers," said Tom Hackenberg, principal analyst of microcontrollers for computer platforms, IHS. "There has been a recent increase of integrated sensor control in the applications processor subsystem, but the more energy efficient and flexible solutions are addressing this rapidly growing market with controllers outside of the applications processor. Not only do these systems offer greater layers of awareness while application processors sleep, they provide designers of next-generation devices such as smartphones, tablets and convertible PCs the option to customize their sensor hub solution or select an integrated sensor-hub-with-touch solution to more highly differentiate their products."
"Our human interface solutions provide unrivalled performance and low-power consumption enabling product differentiation while extending battery life," said Jon Kiachian, vice president of touch marketing, Atmel Corporation. "The addition of maXFusion technology to our maXTouch touchscreen controllers enables exciting new user interface possibilities, and enables us to add more value in our customers' new innovative mobile devices."
Availablity
The UC3L sensor hub solutions with customizable firmware are available now. Production quantities for Atmel's mXF0100 devices are available in December 2012, with the mXF1664S and mXF1188S devices available in January 2013.
Atmel Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML) is a worldwide leader in the design and manufacture of microcontrollers, capacitive touch solutions, advanced logic, mixed-signal, nonvolatile memory and radio frequency (RF) components. Leveraging one of the industry's broadest intellectual property (IP) technology portfolios, Atmel is able to provide the electronics industry with complete system solutions focused on industrial, consumer, communications, computing and automotive markets.

ATLANTA, Oct. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- PersonalLoansForBadCredit.net announces the release of a new article that deals with some of the difficulties experienced by consumers with low credit who are on the hunt for online finance options. The article explains 4 key ways that the loan matching service avoids hassle and successfully overcomes challenges to help find the best lenders for those with bad credit.
A spokesperson for PersonalLoansForBadCredit.net made the announcement.
"We're excited to announce the publication of a great new article on the site. We were motivated to clearly lay out the ways that our service is skilled at helping people find the right lenders that don't discriminate against them for having a less-than-perfect credit history. When searching for personal loans for bad credit people would be well advised to use our "4 Ways" as a checklist to help them select the best loan aggregator specialist. We ultimately hope consumers can read the article to confirm that they are in the best possible hands when they apply to lenders through PersonalLoansForBadCredit".
The article addresses how credit checking is involved in all bank applications and now also some online lenders. It also juxtaposes the typical financial situation of a bank loan applicant versus its users and delineates how PersonalLoansForBadCredit is the best qualified destination for individuals with adverse credit background who need personal loans.
The spokesperson continued, "Most importantly, the article describes how the website's search algorithm matches applicants to specific lenders and products, rather than the banks' "one size fits most." Our website offers a bespoke service for borrowers."
When asked to explain what PersonalLoansForBadCredit offers compared to other similar services, the spokesperson gave further details.

Proprietary Media Optimization Technology Retains Original Resolution, Compresses File Size
Beamr uses a proprietary patent-pending media optimization technology, which reduces the file size of photos by up to three times while retaining the original resolution. Beamr technology, also used in ICVT's highly acclaimed JPEGmini for Mac app (http://www.jpegmini.com), imitates the perceptual qualities of the human visual system, ensuring each photo is compressed to the maximum extent possible by removing redundancies, without creating any visual artifacts in the process.
This digital science enables automatic, maximal compression of photo file size. As a result, iPhone photos are delivered three times faster than other apps, saving battery life, time and data costs. To foster the fastest, most beautiful and intuitively simple experience for both the sharer and receiver, Beamr magazine photos are auto-arranged and provide the optimal viewing experience based on the resolution and orientation of the viewer's device.

Xilinx Announces Defense-Grade 7 Series FPGAs and Zynq-7000 All Programmable SoCs with Fourth Generation Secure Capabilities
Fail safe capabilities extend Xilinx secure leadership with the industry's only defense-grade FPGAs and SoCs for demanding applications
SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX) today announced its fourth generation secure architecture with Information Assurance and Anti-Tamper IP core support for defense-grade 7 series FPGAs and Zynq(TM)-7000 All Programmable SoCs. These unique high reliability, defense-grade devices reduce the risk and cost of deploying the latest Aerospace and Defense (A&D) systems by utilizing off-the-shelf reprogrammable Xilinx® FPGAs and SoCs. Manufactured with state-of-the-art 28nm process technology, all devices are optimized for high performance and the lowest total power. Xilinx defense-grade products are fully pin-compatible to commercial-grade equivalents for low cost prototyping and are offered off-the-shelf.
Xilinx's more than 20-year legacy working with both government and major defense contractors, combined with Xilinx's fourth generation secure silicon, Information Assurance methodology and DoD 5000 Series compliant Anti-Tamper Security Monitor IP core (SECMON), forms the basis for Xilinx's 'fail safe heritage'. This fail safe heritage removes any single point of failure in systems that may compromise a mission, a key attribute in assuring secure applications functionality.
"Xilinx is the only major FPGA vendor offering a distinct defense-grade product line with fail safe heritage," said Yousef Khalilollahi, senior director, Aerospace and Defense at Xilinx. "In addition to the secure capabilities, the defense-grade 7 series FPGAs and Zynq-7000 All Programmable SoCs offer mask set control, ruggedized packaging with fully-leaded (Pb) content for harsh environmental operation, full extended temperature range testing, long term availability and anti-counterfeiting features."
Extensive testing and experience from previous generations of devices has resulted in Xilinx's latest defense-grade offering to provide the lowest cost, lowest power and most flexible solution to developers who need to meet the demanding requirements of a variety of applications in military communications, avionics, electronic warfare (EW), Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance (ISR) systems and missiles and munitions.
An example of a defense-grade application for the Xilinx 7 series FPGAs and Zynq-7000 All Programmable SoCs for secure communications solutions is a device with Single-chip cryptography (SCC) capability with Security Monitor 3.0 IP core for physical design security. SCC combines the functionality of multiple FPGAs into a single device, enabling A&D product developers to reduce SWaP-C of systems through higher levels of integration. Additionally, the inherent reprogrammability of these devices overcome the limitations of traditional long lead- time ASIC and ASSP approaches by allowing multiple capabilities that have the same hardware configuration. These devices specifically address the demands of modern portable wireless A&D systems that must run on battery power while being absolutely secure.
All Programmable FPGAs, SoCs and Tools
System designers are empowered to maximize system performance, lower power, preserve design flexibility, provide superior programmable systems integration and reduce BOM costs with Xilinx's All Programmable, production available defense-grade FPGAs and SoCs including Virtex®, Kintex(TM) and Artix(TM) FPGA families and the Zynq-7000 All Programmable SoCs.
Delivering unchallenged industry leadership in logic, memory, and DSP capacity, 7 series FPGAs with DSP capabilities combine massive DSP processing bandwidth and low power with easy-to-use design flows to insure designs are delivered on-time and on-spec, while providing peak performance, the highest performance DSP at any price to price-optimized performance for volume applications at the right price. as the convenience of managing their lighting from their mobile device.
Philips is opening up the hue app to the developer community and has created an open

Survey Highlights Accelerating Demand for Integrated Financial Supply Chain Services and Further Consolidation of Transaction Banking Businesses
LONDON, October 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --
Customer focus remains critical with corporate treasurers demanding more
services via the mobile and online channels
Misys has announced the results of its annual survey of trends in transaction banking.
The responses from 105 professionals in the trade finance, payments and cash management
industry located in 40 countries highlighted the stronger strategic focus on customer
service and channel and product innovation. It also provided evidence of the
ever-increasing number of banks which have integrated their transaction banking
businesses.
The Global Transaction Banking Survey 2012, undertaken by Misys and Finextra, showed
that the days of having separate business units responsible for cash management, payments
and trade finance are well and truly over. 90 per cent of banks have created a single
transaction banking group or plan to in the near future. While many are still challenged
by complexity in their IT environments, this shows a consistent strategy across the
industry of becoming much more aligned with corporate customers' needs.
Mobile channel development is a growing trend, with 45 per cent of banks ranking this
a priority in the coming year, while 63 per cent stated that expanding self-service
channels such as mobile would be part of their strategy over the next three years.
"The majority of people perform their personal banking online and increasingly via
mobile devices," states Tim Tyler, Global Product Manager, Misys. "This is becoming the
norm for consumers. Corporate treasurers and transaction banking professionals now expect
all their services from banks to be available to them via the same channels as their
personal banking services."
Financial supply chain solutions are more widespread and mature in the market, with 88
per cent of respondents saying their bank has, or will soon offer, financial supply chain
services for corporates. But there is still work to be done, with most of these banks
expressing dissatisfaction with the sophistication and packaging of their current
solutions.
As open account trade continues to rise in most markets, there is increasing interest
in the new Business Payment Obligation (BPO) instrument to achieve better standardisation
and reduce risk. At the same time, more than half of banks are demanding simpler ways to
manage regular updates to existing standards. Both of these results are good news for
SWIFT, given its current involvement with the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) to
develop the BPO, and its work with member banks and corporates on the MyStandards
platform.
Misys is at the forefront of the financial software industry, providing the broadest
portfolio of banking, treasury, trading and risk solutions available on the market. With
1,800 customers in 120 countries our team of domain experts and partners have an
unparalleled ability to address industry requirements at both a global and local level.
Misys was formed by the merger of Misys with Turaz, which includes the award-winning
Kondor+ product line. Combined they are able to address all customer requirements across
both the banking and trading book businesses. Misys is the trusted partner that financial
services organisations turn to for help solving their most complex problems.
LOC Enterprises introduces the LOC Card®: a universal loyalty card for consumers and merchants
Eliminates the need to carry multiple loyalty cards or key fobs
CINCINNATI, Oct. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- LOC Enterprises, LLC today introduced the first truly universal loyalty card system that eliminates the need for consumers to carry multiple loyalty cards to receive merchant rewards and benefits.
The LOC Card Solution is a "universal" loyalty card that provides an "all of the above approach" (wallet card, a key fob, and a smart phone app) to allow customers to easily participate in any merchant loyalty program. The LOC Card® is simple, convenient, and provides consumers with a solution that they have been demanding for many years.
Consumers obtain the card and key fob free at participating merchants and then enroll in the LOC program through the LOC Card website. The LOC Card is then activated, and with one swipe of the card through any participating merchant's system, the customer is automatically enrolled into the merchant's loyalty program - no applications, no forms, no hassle.
"Consumers are refusing to enroll in customer loyalty programs because of privacy concerns, cumbersome enrollment processes, and no room to carry additional cards," said Jack J. Kennamer, president of LOC Enterprises, LLC. "The LOC Card addresses all three of these concerns."
Consumers want a universal loyalty card
Consumer research has shown that 52 percent of Americans prefer a single card for all of their loyalty accounts while 32% prefer a single key fob and 16 percent want a smart app. (Source: Global Association for Marketing at Retail, March 2011.) Of the 112 million households in the United States, the average household is enrolled in 14-18 different customer loyalty programs.
In addition to eliminating the need for multiple cards and multiple enrollments, LOC allows consumers to monitor all participating merchant loyalty program points/offers from a single, secure website.
The LOC Card was introduced in Dallas today at the Loyalty 360 Engagement and Experience Expo.
"For years, consumers have been asking for a solution to relieve them of carrying eight-plus individual loyalty cards everywhere they go," said Erin Rease, COO of Loyalty 360, the trade association for merchant loyalty programs. "Now there's a solution that will greatly enhance the customer's experience. We're honored to have LOC Enterprises launching their universal LOC Card solution at the Engagement and Experience Expo."
Inspiration came while standing in line at a sporting goods store
Kennamer, LOC's president and a highly-successful business entrepreneur, came up with the idea of a universal loyalty card last November - Black Friday, to be exact -- while waiting in a line to purchase Christmas gifts for his 10-year-old son at a local sporting goods store in Cincinnati.
"While I was standing in line, I started hearing this cadence: 'Do you have a Rewards card? No. Do you want one? No.' I kept hearing it over and over again. Finally, a lady in the next line over answers, 'Sure, I'd like one,' and a guy behind her lets out a big sigh as she starts providing information to the cashier for the application. The guy behind finally says, 'Come on already, I've got to go.'"
"Then the cashier asks the guy in front of me the same question and he holds up a key ring brimming with what looked to be a hundred key fobs, and he says 'No room for you.'"
Research showed no universal loyalty card existed
After his shopping experience, Kennamer researched the issue for more than a month and discovered that no truly universal loyalty card was available even though consumers had demanded one. Kennamer surmises that a universal loyalty card had not been created in the past because the cost of computer servers and hardware needed to handle such an endeavor was prohibitive. However, computer virtualization and cloud computing have changed that dynamic.
Teaming with Logicalis and VMware, LOC Enterprises has created an IT infrastructure that allows consumers to use the LOC Card all over the world. Headquartered in the United Kingdom, Logicalis is an international IT solution and managed services provider with expertise in communication, collaboration, data center and cloud services. VMware, based in Palo Alto, California, is a global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure.
"With our partners, Logicalis and VMware, we have the infrastructure in place to accept the LOC card anywhere in the world," Kennamer said. "The next step is to have merchants start accepting the card."
LOC is now signing up merchants to participate in the program
Kennamer said that LOC Enterprises has hired a national sales force to work throughout the United States and Canada to sign up merchants to participate in the LOC program.
"We think consumers will be our greatest ambassadors since they have made it abundantly clear that they want a universal loyalty card," Kennamer said. "Much like they did with the early credit cards, we think consumers will push merchants to adopt a universal loyalty card because of its convenience."
Kennamer said that the company is encouraging consumers to visit its website, http://www.LOCcard.com, to recommend merchants that they believe should accept the LOC Card and to 'Like' and 'Follow' the company on its Facebook page and Twitter feed to show support for the new product.
LOC facilitates enrollment in existing merchant loyalty programs
Once merchants understand the LOC program, Kennamer thinks they will be quick to embrace it.
"LOC is not a loyalty program," Kennamer said. "Instead, the LOC Card facilitates customer enrollment in existing merchant loyalty programs, and thus, encourages merchant loyalty."
This is important, he said, because a "loyal" customer is 15 times more likely to patronize a business than a customer without a loyalty tie to the business. (Source: Research and market data in The Loyalty Effect, a study of loyalty programs by major U.S. retailers and restaurant chains.)
Merchants are very protective of their customers' information, and whenever possible, they want to have complete control over that valuable information," Kennamer said.
"For merchants, the LOC Card is simply a universal enrollment vehicle into their loyalty/rewards programs," Kennamer said. "The merchants maintain complete control over their sales data and the LOC system has no access to any of that information."
By structuring the system this way, there should be no reason for any merchant not to want to participate in LOC's universal loyalty card program, he said.
"The benefit is that merchants will receive greater consumer participation, and at the end of the day, that's what everyone -- consumers and merchants alike -- wants," Kennamer said. "LOC allows any loyalty system provider to participate and still provide its same services without the fear of competition -- truly a win-win for the entire industry."
Merchants can continue to accept their "branded" cards in addition to the LOC card, should they wish to do so, Kennamer said. The LOC program also allows small businesses with no existing customer loyalty program to start such programs with much less risk and cost -- knowing that it will be much easier to enroll customers through LOC than a stand-alone loyalty-card program, he said.

Red Cross Gearing Up for Sandy; Urges Everyone to Get Ready Now for Massive Storm
WASHINGTON, Oct. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Hurricane Sandy is barreling toward the East Coast and the American Red Cross is launching a multi-state response to help the millions of people who may be in the path of the storm.
The Red Cross urges everyone to make their final storm preparations today. Important information about how to get ready is available on the Red Cross web site.
Weather experts predict the massive storm could affect residents up and down the eastern region of the United States for several days and the Red Cross is working with government officials and community partners to coordinate a wide-ranging response. Sandy is expected to have a huge impact in Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia. Some areas are already under state of emergencies.
"This is a dangerous storm that should be taken seriously, and people should get ready now," said Charley Shimanski, senior vice president of Disaster Services for the Red Cross. "Sandy could affect people all along the East Coast and the Red Cross is preparing to open shelters and is moving workers, vehicles and relief supplies into place."
Sandy is expected to bring as much as ten inches of rain and flooding in some areas, winds gusting up to 80 miles per hour, extended power outages and even several feet of snow in the higher elevations.
Red Cross chapters throughout the potentially affected areas are mobilizing hundreds of disaster workers, readying shelters and coordinating response efforts with community partners. Red Cross workers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware are finalizing preparations in advance of opening shelters as early as Sunday afternoon if needed. Relief supplies like cots, blankets, ready-to-eat meals and snacks are being moved into place to support sheltering efforts.
In Delaware and Maryland, the Red Cross is coordinating with the Southern Baptist Convention to serve meals in shelters. Meanwhile in West Virginia, the Red Cross is preparing for significant snowfall and coordinating response planning with state and county emergency management agencies.
GET READY The Red Cross has information on its website about how to get prepared for the storm, including steps for hurricane and power outage emergencies. Videos are also available to help get prepared, including information on severe weather preparedness and how to get ready for winter weather.
RED CROSS APPSPeople should download the free Red Cross Hurricane and First Aid apps for mobile devices to have emergency information at their fingertips. The Hurricane App provides real-time hurricane safety information such as weather alerts and where Red Cross shelters are located. The app also features a toolkit with a flashlight, strobe light and alarm, and the one-touch "I'm Safe" button lets someone use social media sites to tell family and friends they are okay.
The Hurricane App can be downloaded in Spanish by changing the language setting on someone's smart phone to Spanish before downloading. The First Aid app puts expert advice for everyday emergencies in someone's hand. The apps can be found in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store for Android by searching for American Red Cross.

GOTHENBURG, Sweden, October 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --
'Anthill' (http://www.anthillgame.com ), the sensational real-time strategy game
from Swedish indie Image & Form (http://www.imageform.se ) that took the App Store by
storm in October 2011, is set for a huge content update on November 1. This marks the
first anniversary for a game loved by gamers and non-gamers alike.
To view the Multimedia News Release, please click:
Immediately selected by Apple as iPad Game of the Week when released, 'Anthill' has
remained a favorite among millions of bug-crazed iOS gamers. In a market where unanimous
love for a game is rare, tens of thousands of user reviews for 'Anthill' have been
consistent: the average is an unbeatable 5 out of 5.
"We always knew 'Anthill' would be a great game, but the response has exceeded our
hopes and expectations," says Brjann Sigurgeirsson, CEO of Image & Form. "Every day we
read new reviews from people saying it's the best game on the App Store. In rare cases we
get a 4 instead of a 5 - simply because they want more. So we want to give them more to
dig into... I guess we've grown addicted to top marks."
The 'Anthill' objective is deceptively simple: use streams of different ants to defend
the hill against multitudes of beautiful, terrible insects over a large number of levels.
The gameplay is ever-changing and surprisingly deep, which could explain the game's
longevity and high replay value.
"We want to make games that last, that really give people their money's worth. Thanks
to its variety, generous content and depth, 'Anthill' never gets short or old," notes
Sigurgeirsson. "It's fun, mesmerizing, beautiful, and a true iOS milestone. Millions love
it already, and we want millions more to help defend the hill."
Featuring new levels, new strange insects, new ant skills and many days of gameplay,
the new version of Anthill will be released on November 1.

LG Electronics Launches First 'Ultra-High-Definition' 4K TVs In U.S.
LG's 84-inch Class Display Boasts Four Times the Resolution of Full HD, Ushers in New Era in Picture Quality for Large-Screen TVs
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Ushering in a new era in home entertainment, the first "Ultra High Definition" flat-panel TV - with four times the resolution of today's HDTVs - went on sale today to consumers in the United States.
LG Electronics USA chose Southern California, the epicenter of entertainment and innovation, as the consumer launchpad for this groundbreaking technology. Teaming up with high-end retailer Video & Audio Center, LG hosted hundreds of consumers eager to be among the first in the United States to have an opportunity to see and purchase LG's new Ultra HD TV.
The LG 84-inch class (84-inch diagonal) LED TV, with a native Ultra High Def screen resolution of 3840 x 2160 to match its impressive size*, has an MSRP of $19,999.99. Model 84LM9600 quadruples the level of detail from full 1080p HD resolution to a massive 8 million pixels. Even before so-called "4K" content is available, LG's powerful up-conversion engine, the proprietary "LG Resolution Upscaler Plus," delivers higher detail from current HD/SD external sources.
On hand at Video & Audio Center's Lawndale/Torrance, Calif. store today to discuss the importance of Ultra HD's development and its expected market adoption were industry luminaries, including Jeff Joseph of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA); Randall Dark, an award winning director and 4K content pioneer; and industry insider and technologist Tom Campbell.
-- Joseph, CEA's senior vice president of communications and strategic
relationships and passionate advocate for 4K technology, said,
"Innovation drives our industry, and Ultra High Definition is the latest
innovation that will transform home entertainment. This milestone is a
pivotal moment in TV history because Ultra HD 4K technology will make it
possible for consumers to purchase huge TVs with crystal clear picture
quality."
-- Dark, CEO of Randall Dark Productions, and one of the world's first
directors/ cinematographers to advance high-definition programming,
said, "Content is always a major factor when new hardware technologies
are introduced on the market. The LG Ultra HD TV's upscaling capability
is crucial so consumers can enjoy the benefits of higher resolution now,
while the rest of the industry, myself included, work on ways to advance
this new format with native 4K content."
-- Campbell, widely quoted technologist and futurist who serves on the CEA
Ultra HD Working Group, said, "I liken the dawn of Ultra HD technology
to the switch from standard-definition analog TV to digital
high-definition TV in the late 1990s. It's going to be big, and not just
because it's key for big screens. I can already see consumers calling
for more models, more sizes and more content."
"Picture quality has always been LG's foremost priority, one that's especially important now as manufacturers scale TVs to meet the trend line pointing toward larger and larger class sizes," said Jay Vandenbree, senior vice president, LG Electronics USA, and head of LG's U.S. home entertainment business. "We were instrumental in developing the HD standard and, similarly, our goal now is to pioneer Ultra High Def technology to create the crisp and immersive viewing experience consumers are currently missing with large-screen TVs."
Joseph Akhtarzad, vice president and co-owner of Video & Audio Center's three LA-area stores, said, "Ultra High Definition is a very significant development, a high-end product catering to a high-end consumer who demands the ultimate home entertainment experience. We are proud to be the first retailer in the nation to sell this cutting-edge LG technology to consumers."
In addition to its excellent picture quality, LG's 84LM9600 boasts a growing Smart TV ecosystem, which is composed of over 1,000 apps and gives users access to a growing range of premium content services**. Users can easily browse and navigate through the Smart TV ecosystem using LG's Magic Remote, which allows users to make commands using the control modes of Voice Recognition, Wheel, Magic Gesture and Point. It also features LG's CINEMA 3D technology and an imbedded 2D to 3D conversion engine expanding 3D content availability. For more information on LG's Ultra HD TV please visit, http://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-84LM9600-led-tv.
*No "ultra high definition" or "4K" video content is currently available. No broadcast or other standard currently exists for "4K" or "ultra high definition" television, and the 84LM9600 may or may not be compatible with such standards if and when developed.
**Internet connection and certain subscriptions required and sold separately. Content and services vary by product and are subject to change without notice.
For a small percentage of the population, the viewing of stereoscopic 3D video may cause discomfort such as dizziness or nausea. If you experience any of these symptoms, discontinue using the 3D functionality and contact your health care provider.
