NTT Com to Launch Asia Submarine-cable Express in August, Offering Lowest Latency Network Service between Tokyo and Singapore
TOKYO, Aug. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), a global cloud services provider and wholly-owned subsidiary of NTT Group, announced on August 9 that it will start operation of the Asia Submarine-cable Express (ASE), a 40-gigabit-per-second (Gbps), ultra-low latency undersea cable connecting major cities in Asia on August 20. ASE will enhance NTT Com's highly reliable global network services by boosting the capacity and strengthening the redundancy of its Asian cable networks.
ASE, which eventually will incorporate 100 Gbps optical technology, will launch with a total carrying capacity exceeding 15 terabits per second (Tbps), a total length of about 7,800 km, and special designs to withstand earthquake and typhoon damage. NTT Com is the major investor in the cable system, which has been constructed in cooperation with Malaysia-based Telekom Malaysia, Philippines-based PLDT and Singapore-based StarHub. The cable has landing points in Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, and Malaysia, and will add Hong Kong in the first quarter of 2013. The route between Japan and Singapore not only covers the shortest distance to maximize reliability and minimize latency, it is also connected directly to the Serangoon Data Center in Singapore and later will also connect to the Hong Kong Financial Data Centre. The direct connection enables customers there to use NTT Com's network, data centers and cloud services on an end-to-end, one-stop basis.
On August 20, 2012, with the launch of the new subsea cable, NTT Com will begin offering an enhanced global leased line service, by incorporating ASE's low-latency routes into its existing Arcstar Global Leased Line Service. The newly enhanced service leverages ASE's Japan-Singapore connection with an industry-leading latency of than 65 milliseconds latency, more than 3 milliseconds faster than routes via other subsea cables. Existing US-Japan routes also will be used, including the NTT Com's own PC-1 cable which offers the lowest latency connection between Tokyo and Chicago, home of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Superior service between Asia and the U.S. is especially attractive for financial enterprises, such as high-frequency trading firms that issue huge numbers of buy/sell orders for financial products and must transmit such information instantaneously.

MapSAR Website Provides Online Resources to Search and Rescue Personnel
GIS Tools and Virtual Communities Now Available in One Location
REDLANDS, Calif., Aug. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Esri today announced the launch of a new web portal that supplies search and rescue (SAR) personnel with GIS tools, educational materials, and a virtual community for learning and sharing.
"The launch of the MapSAR website is the result of a community of search and rescue personnel linked together by their use of GIS," says Russ Johnson, global director of disaster response for Esri. NYU and NYU-Poly Launch World's First Academic Research Center to Combine Medicine with Wireless Communications and Computing
25 Faculty and 100 Student Researchers Work with National Instruments and Other Industry, Federal Partners to Advance Wireless Technologies and Applications
NEW YORK, Aug. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- New York University and Polytechnic Institute of NYU (NYU-Poly) announced that National Instruments (NI) is joining them as the founding industrial sponsor in launching the world's first academic research center combining the exploration of advanced wireless technologies, computing and medical applications.
Called NYU WIRELESS, the center researches advanced communications and antenna technologies, compressed sensing for spectrum efficiency in massively broadband wireless communications and medical imaging, the creation of smaller and smarter cellular networks and wireless devices that cooperate rather than compete for spectrum. The center also focuses on creating fundamental knowledge of wireless methods and new circuits and systems for a promising new frontier in the wireless spectrum: millimeter-wave and sub-terahertz communications.
NYU WIRELESS has enlisted 25 engineering, computer science and medical professors and more than 100 graduate students and post-doctoral researchers. They will work with researchers from NI, major federal funding sources such as the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and subsequent industry partners. Hardware and software from NI will serve as a test bed solution for some of the new research initiatives.
New research space totaling 23,000 square feet is scheduled to open on the downtown Brooklyn campus of NYU-Poly this winter. The new center brings together faculty who have current research projects that total approximately $10 million annually.

NYU WIRELESS is founded and directed by Professor Theodore (Ted) Rappaport, who recently joined the faculty of NYU-Poly's Computer and Electrical Engineering Department, NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and the Department of Radiology at NYU Langone Medical Center.
