Consumers Seeking Bankruptcy Advice on Avvo.com Reaches All-Time High
Unemployment, concerns about retirement, and professional athlete bankruptcies in the news fuels increase
SEATTLE, Aug. 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Avvo, Inc., the web's largest expert-only legal and health Q&A forum and directory (http://www.avvo.com), latest Avvo Legal Advisory (ALA) shows that bankruptcy is top of mind for many in the United States as questions in Avvo's Q&A forum regarding bankruptcy, and specifically its impact on retirement, reached an all-time high. Despite research from the National Bankruptcy Research Center (NBKRC) stating that U.S. personal bankruptcy filings decreased by 13% in the first half of this year, consumers asked nearly 10,000 bankruptcy-related questions on Avvo.com during the first half of 2012. Other findings include:
-- In May 2012, as the U.S. jobless claims rose[1] for the 4th straight
week, consumers asked over 2,000 bankruptcy-related questions, the most
ever reported on Avvo.com.
-- Avvo.com recorded a 73% increase in the number of retirement-related
bankruptcy questions in the first half of 2012 over the same period last
year. Taking into account population density, residents from Arizona,
California and Florida asked the most questions concerning retirement
and bankruptcy in the first half of 2012.
-- The bankruptcy question with the most views in the last six months: Can
I change my Chapter 13 filing to a Chapter 7 bankruptcy? has been
visited almost 3,000 times.
-- Bankruptcy questions also spiked in the weeks following news coverage of
former professional athletes filing for bankruptcy in 2012, including
NFL running back Jamal Lewis, NBA player Dennis Rodman, MLB player Lenny
Dykstraand NFL superstar Warren Sapp.
Even professional athletes aren't immune to bankruptcy. In 2009, Sports Illustrated estimated that nearly 80 percent of NFL players go bankrupt or face serious financial stress within two years of ending their playing careers, and that 60 percent of NBA players are broke within five years of retiring from the game.

Xbox Swing Voters say they follow politics and public policy matters in the news at least once per week, including 23 percent who follow these issues daily. Thirty-nine percent say they often watch information about the presidential election with other people in their household.

Today, Vail Resorts (NYSE: MTN) announced the third generation of its wildly popular ski and snowboard application, EpicMix(TM), which, once it launches in mid-December, will provide skiers a new way to experience ski racing at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone in Colorado and Heavenly and Northstar in California and Nevada. With EpicMix Racing, skiers will automatically have their race times compared to ski racing great, Lindsey Vonn, with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded based on achievement. Race times, digital medals, overall leaderboards and leaderboards with just family and friends will all be available on both the EpicMix website and mobile application. Race results and medals can then be easily shared on Facebook and Twitter. Finally, the Company has created the Lindsey Vonn Race Series, in which all skiers and riders will be ranked based on their best 10 races of the season. The top racers from across the six resorts will be invited to a grand finale event in April 2012, hosted by Vonn, on the world-famous Birds of Prey World Cup Course at Beaver Creek. have to go inside or fill out paper forms.
-- Lindsey Vonn will set the pace for EpicMix racing at the U.S. Ski Team
training event at Vail Mountain in early November 2012.
-- For each race, digital medals of gold, silver and bronze will be awarded
through the EpicMix application, based upon the skier's age, gender and
discipline. Kids will also earn physical medals after each race.
-- EpicMix will adjust each racer's time for age, gender and discipline and
compare that to the time set by Lindsey Vonn and assign each racer a
"seconds behind Lindsey" score for each race.
